Christine makes fabulous cakes! Be it gluten, free dairy free...and others!
I called in the cafe today and had a beautiful rather large piece of lemon drizzle cake.OMG It was amazing.
I have Coeliac disease and Green Flute have been supplying my Xmas, birthday cakes for years!
I cannot recommend this cafe enough....it was so great to sit in a cafe and have a piece of cake like everyone else! My partner had a slice of Victoria sandwich , (not all the cakes are gluten free) there is lots of variety, also salads etc ..
I took 2 pieces of cake home ,,,,Christine has lots of other things in the pipe line , and I am delighted to give her and the Green Flute cafe my highest recommendation .
Will be back soon

Such a lovely place to go for a walk and take boat trips. We had an hour long float on the canal. I say float, because the barge moves so gently, it literally feels like you're floating along. Both myself and my wife enjoyed it very much. It was so peaceful and had beautiful scenery.
We had a lovely walk along the canal, bought a lucky horse shoe for £4.50 in the little shop ,went on a hour long Barge ride up the canal at £8 each it was well worth the money was going to have a coffee in penelopes Cafe but it was full there were plenty of seats outside but we thought it might rain all in all we had a wonderful day and £1 all day parking fabulous 👌
A really pleasant place to visit on a sunny day, just £1 for parking and you can enjoy a pleasant walk through the woods and along the canal in the beautiful Welsh countryside. There is also a cafe, boat hire, playground and plenty of benches and picnic tables.
Our first visit to a beautiful day along a local canal. It is £1 to park, so make sure you have a coin on you. Short walk from car park to the canal basin. There were a number of barges that you can pay to ride. Nothing too expensive but you can also hire a barge - please check the website. To get on the footpath there is a short walk under a bridge and then quite a steep walk up an incline. Once at the top you can head right, which takes you in the direction of Brecon or left taking you back towards Pontypool. We went left and had a lovely, quiet walk along the canal for around 45 mins before heading back. Called into Penelope's cafe for a Peroni and a toasted sandwich. We sat outside as the weather was lovely. Slight disappointment in the cleanliness of the toilets, situated behind and outside of the cafe. There are tear off maps in Penelope's cafe but did not see these until almost at the end of our day.
A picture-postcard place to visit. We hired a rooster boat for a day to cruise along the Brecon Canal. It fits up to 8 people and is equipped with a gas ring, sink, bathroom, indoor seating, and water supply. We decided to travel north up towards Llanfoist, which takes about 3 hours one way. Charming scenery along the way, and there wasn't any lock to worry about. In total, there were 95 bridges before returning back to the base. So much peace and tranquillity if you want to get away from the busy life. There's no canalside pub in this direction, but we were happy just picnicking ourselves. They didn't provide tea, so bring yourself if you want to. Important things to know are that the boat's tiller/steering handle is outside, and you have to stand all the way. So the driver needs to consider taking a raincoat in case the weather isn't going on your favour.
There was some God-awful band (my opinion) that caused to to turn around and cycle the full 24km back to Newport because there was no chance I was going to listen to them ruin good music.
Good prices inside the pub however, ample seating area, bit confusing to get there but all in all worth stopping at if you're going down the canal route.
I'll visit again for a more in-depth review.
Excellent for a day out interview country. Ideal for dog owners. Cafe Excellent and reasonably priced.
Friendly staff.
Stunning place, nice to sit relax and have the perfect coffee.
Opens at 10am.
Free parking.
Love the wharf, nice meals in cafe, usually visit to fish in canal
Very dog friendly, I had an oat milk hot chocolate drink with marshmallow topping. Free treats for the dog. Pleanty of choices of doggie beds or blankets with toys available.
Overall, excellent customer service and experience. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Will definitely visit again with my little dog. We look forward to it following a walk in the area.
Absolutely beautiful place. Can't believe this beautiful walk is on our doorstep
Picturesque canal and boatyard surrounded by a Forrest. Penelopes restaurant has a good selection of drinks and food. Nice seating areas under the shade of trees and children's playground. Parking costs £1 for all day and supports the holiday area.
What a perfect spot. £1 parking all day. Great base to walk along the canal. We only did a small part but will be pack. Penelope’s cafe is a great pit stop.
Lovely little gem offering a combination of canal side & woodland walks. Well stocked cafe, picnic area, boat trips and parking only £1 all day. Shame the advertised visitor centre looks to have been closed for some time
Great place. Really interesting history and lovely tree lined canal spot. It was great to visit on family canoe paddle from further up the canal. On a hot day the outside, shaded eating area with playpark was great. The portions were ample and it was nice to have a cold beer and an ice cream!
What a fab place to people, boat watch or enjoy welsh cakes and a cuppa. Gorgeous walks up towpath. Play park for children too
Lovely walk along the canal and we got to see the barges. Worth a visit if you like stunning and relaxing scenery. Didn't visit the cafe but wish we had now. A nice way to spend some time
Cafe, barges, canoes, old lime works - what’s not to like/enjoy. Peaceful place, surrounded by nature.
