Spent bank holiday Jan 2nd 2023 here with my family for our last lunch out. I'm giving it a 4 star for its fabulous location, inspiring building and stunning, warm interior, it's the perfect country pub.
The food was good and very tasty, only thing to mention for me was I would have liked a little more flavor.
Kids meals are very good and they have a good choice for children.
The service began very well indeed and I must add always has been in the past, although when we asked for the desert menu it took an easy 10 minutes to arrive, then when no one approached and a further 15 minutes past we decided to get the bill and leave and not have desert after all as we expected a lengthy wait. I will note the pub was not over busy at this point and I feel this was only a slight oversight from staff on the floor.
Finally the beer, local, and tasty in particular the Big Tree amber ale.
Worth a visit.
Great atmosphere! Been coming here for decades and have always loved it. It had a face-lift not too long ago but it still retains a lovely pub atmosphere.
Great food options and drinks selection. Very friendly service and Paul is always very welcoming!
Highly recommend!
Been here a few times, had a nice meal, great atmosphere.
One of my favorite country pubs. Loads of parking spaces, very cozy ambiances and the food is pretty good as well! I love that they offer a mini cake with a coffee for dessert as an option because sometimes that is all I can eat after a big Sunday lunch.
Amazing pub in a very idyllic location close to Dunham Massey park. The young owner who lives on site (lucky guy) made us feel incredibly welcome and we spend a few hours over a lovely leisurely lunch in the sun in the front garden.
Highly recommended and Hasta la vista 🙏
Had lunch with family at the Axe and Cleaver the last week in August, following a birthday.
Not been there for at least a year.
It appears to be under new management.
The menu much improved, along with the chef.
Had a very good lunch, the food was delicious. The sea bass was outstanding.
Good service.
Let's hope it stays that way.
Very lovely, would definitely come again. Great menu, good options, very affordable, kind staff.
Only feedback was my partners mushroom wellington only had 4 mushrooms in. Other than that, top notch.
As a family, we really love this restaurant and have been visiting for many years. We decided to book a evening meal on the spur of the moment and we were so glad we did. The evening was top notch. The food was excellent, the staff were attentive and lovely and the atmosphere was cozy. Such a lovely evening. Well recommended. A good varied menu of food and drink. Definitely one of our favourite places to dine out. Thank you.
Alyson and Karl did an excellent job keeping up with our party of 16. Neil and James in the kitchen delivered an amazing rib of beef, and Venison roast (specials board). The pie was brilliant. The 5 children all enjoyed their meals.
Thanks team.
Delicious Sunday lunch and sea bass and scallops. Benn, our server, was very attentive and friendly. Fair prices for what we had and good sized portions.
Wonderful experience at the axe and cleaver today, - fantastic value for money and more importantly me an absolute 5 star service from Denise who looked after us today. Nothing was too much and she made us all feel so welcome. The axe and cleaver are lucky to have you on board!
Not been to this place for a number of years but on return it did not disappoint. Fabulous early lunch, booked on line we had wonderful service from staff. The food was superb. No waiting time it came out piping hot with lovely service.
Great place I mean really enjoyable place to eat. Enjoy it. We will be back with no danger.
Wonderful pub. We've been here many times and it always feels like a special place to visit. There's always a warm welcome and the food is excellent.
It's also close to lots of lovely walks.
Lovely country pub. It was quite busy but not crowded as could sit outside under the trees - was told 30-40 minute wait for food but was much quicker than expected. Two of our group choose the vegan option and both dishes very good.
Only ever been for lunch here but it's a great place to come nestled in Dunham village surrounded by countryside. It suits it's surroundings. Good service, solid menu and reasonable selection of drinks. Fine for parents, grandparents and kids. Chef and Brewer chain of pubs. Can eat outside.

Absolutely great experience. Arrived for late lunch with our 4 year old and some friends.
Staff were amazing, especially with our 4 year old. Going the extra mile to appease his tantrums with an ice lolly and even nipping to get vimto for him to drink.
To match this incredible service the food was great. Everyone had a lovely meal and it was priced really affordably too. Could not recommend this place enough.
Great food , service a little spotty but not too bad. Subdued and a little cramped. Won't prevent me going again though. Weather was awful & maybe people subdued by that.
I think I might have been unlucky, but based on my experience the food wasn’t great. I had roast sirloin which was so tough it was inedible. Lovely place though.
