It's not a 5-star hotel, as mentioned by other reviews. The staff are lovely. Our twin room was fine. Warm. Comfortable. The en-suit did have a slight musty aroma, but it was clean. The shower looked dated, but it was roomy, and the electric shower was the same as one we had installed at home. Book direct! Breakfast was lovely. They didn't do food on the Monday night we stayed, but the barmaid recommended a great alternative. Loads of character in this historic building. I really liked it. Excellent value for money. Lovely town too.

Fantastic pub. Great food. Great beer. The food is a fascinating mix of traditional pub grub and Asian - we tried the Butter Chicken Naanzi (Indian style pizza) and the street food (that was my favourite). Even has chicken strips and similar for the little ones if they are not so adventurous. What's more it's super, super dog friendly!

Great pub on the main street of Barnard Castle. About 4 Real Ales (including Cummings & Goings) and good traditional pub food. Definitely pop in if you are in the area.

We called in here for lunch. It was a dripping wet rainy day but both of us and our soggy dog were made welcome. A good range of beers and other drinks at reasonable prices. We had the Indian sharing platter, very tasty and freshly made, just what we needed on a miserable day. Very good value for money. Thank you for the warm welcome.

Outstanding traditional pub with the most authentic Indian food we have ever enjoyed. Fantastic beers with wonderful staff. Thank s to mama Sue for making us so welcome and of course to the great Chef Shiv.

Called in for a cheeky, ice cold pint on a very warm day (26°c). I also had some lovely Sweet Chilli Chicken loaded fries to go with my pint. 😋
The staff were great and nothing seemed to be a bother. The place is dog friendly too. 🐕

We had lunch in here, an Indian sharing platter, and it was excellent. Plenty of food for two, tasty and fresh. There is a good choice of drinks at reasonable prices. Dog friendly too, thanks

Called in for Sunday dinner with 7 of us and 2 dogs. First class service and food.
Really accommodating with a quick phone call to book a table.
Food is really good along with their service.
Thank you.

Just had Sunday lunch at The Old Well; fantastic!! Food excellent, service brilliant, price very reasonable. Good hint that this is an excellent pub is that most other guests were locals. High;y recommended.

Amazing place..picture postcard street..some of the rooms are historic.. well stocked bar.. Their Indian food offering, made by Indian chef, is simply the best I ever had.. must try Nanza ..it's a pizza on a nan.. the staff is ever helpful, accommodating and polite.. cleanliness is 5/5.. Must stay if you're in Bernard Castle.. most of the attractions are within walking distances from here.. Thankyou, Roy and Reema for the wonderful experience.

Limited menu but because of that the food was outstanding. Although a late Sunday dinner beef or chicken dinners beautiful, a vegan option was available.
Oh and if you're a beer fan this is your place lots of crafts at the bar!
Excellent little pub, we loved it.

Not a local round here, came for a few days visited numerous places around the area, been to every local place however this place is awesome very friendly staff who would go out of your way to help you and also the history and cameras shown of this place is unbelievable. Would highly recommend for all ages #love it, thank you

Decor very dated, rooms could do with modernising. Evening meal was ok. Entertainment was fab. The breakfast was tasty and the staff were friendly and seem to be doing their best.
Don't think I would stay there again

Would like to say a big well done to the owners and the staff of the Old Well Inn in Barnard castle. We went down for a one night stay with some friends (took over 7 rooms lol) . At short notice we had to take our 2 labradors. I was so impressed with how dog friendly they are. Water bowls in all areas and poo bags available in the beer garden.
The rooms were lovely with huge beds!! And the breakfast was delicious
Would most definitely stay again and would recommend to friends

Very comfortable and very friendly staff. Unfortunately we arrived late and after a bad journey were too tired to try the food . The menu looked very good.

We only had a pint but the staff were very friendly and it was a hot day so we went and sat out in the perfect sun trap beer garden and to make my day the owners had a very friendly dog that was happy to see us. When we have more time I would definitely go back.

The steak pie I ordered last night was very poor
Mine just had meat in yet 2 others had carrot in ,
The meat was tough
The pastry lid was rock hard , couldn’t cut it
Nice pub but won’t be eating there again 😞

Lovely little place, I thought we were going into a cafe, didn't realise it was a pub! Nice quiet cosy atmosphere, good service and great food. Good family eatery.

Had a lovely meal here yesterday. Were made to feel welcome. Lunch menu is not huge but did us. Got cooked breakfasts which were lovely. Gammon was a good size and tasty. I had curry flavour was good but it could of been hotter. Beer garden is lovely loads of seats flowers made it look so nice well sheltered from the wind. Would defiantly go back

Disapointing! It was meant to be a treat for our friends significant b'day, the room was dirty and shabby and only made up for 2 people when booked for 3, they did sort a sofa bed out and a sorry card, but next morning we couldn't shower unless we wanted a weak cold one. The breakfast was tasty and the staff were friendly and seem to be doing their best. I should have realised I would be disappointed when they insisted we paid for the room before we saw it. Lesson learned!

Had a great stay last night and really enjoyed the live music too, cheers for the bottle of wine also

Warm welcome from the host, dog friendly pub with sunny enclosed and sheltered beer garden. Nice selection of beers, and great fish and chips.
