We came for lunch over the weekend after winning a three course meal for two in a Facebook competition. Amazing, I never win anything normally. I just wanted to say thank you for a wonderful lunch. We loved it all. The chicken wings were great. I don't usually order them, too messy, but these were worth it, even though we needed to be tactfully handed more serviettes to clean ourselves up. I did get a picture of himself wearing so much bbq sauce all over his face he probably would have attracted wasps if we'd ventured outside. I'll be framing that one. Probably not recommended for a first date if you want to impress though.
We also had the Mac n Cheese bites which were yum. Crunchy outside, gooey inside. We cleared both plates and then started to feel worried when we realised we had two more courses to go.
Next was the Veggie Fish & Chips with battered halloumi. Blimey that was good, loved the minted peas and the halloumi was so nice and an Indian spiced burger with onion bhaji and raita. Wow. We made a good stab at them, the portions are really generous, both were gorgeous. I preferred the thick cut chips that came with his halloumi and he liked the shoestring fries with my burger, so there was quite a lot of plate swopping, but in the relaxed atmosphere that was okay.
We were stuffed. This was on the hottest day of the year so far.... but we are strong and knew it would be rude not to have desert, so we shared one. Red Velvet Cheesecake because it came with strawberry ripple ice cream and ice cream seemed like a good idea. It arrived looking so lovely with two spoons. We were sure we wouldn't mange more than a bite and of course cleaned the plate.
Thank you Malt Shovel we had such a great time, you were so welcoming and friendly and we will definitely be back. We're looking forward to trying out the full new menu when you launch it having tried the specials.
We will definitely have those chicken wings again - and I'll be bringing a pack of wet wipes. Thanks for being such a lovely companion Thomas Miller. x
We popped out for a meal after decorating all day the kitchen had shut at 6pm, but still served us as we were really hungry !!! Top notch food. Really friendly service and serve a wide selection of Gins that washed down are dinner lovely will deffinelty come back and recommend to friends and family . Keep up the good work
We've just had a lunch time meal on our wedding anniversary. Lovely food & friendly staff, would definitely recommend.
I was not expecting to be sat here (in the Malt Shovel) writing a review but honestly, what a great place! I have had one of the best burgers (think closer to Annies Burger Shack), great beer and the music hit the spot. Apparently they do a great Sunday roast but yet to try that....but I will. Come on down!
Had meal for five yesterday lovely food well cooked and good value, plus a good selection of real ales, will make it a regular place to eat at.
Visit quite a lot. The place is always clean and the staff polite. Always have a meal which is enjoyable and reasonably priced. Nothing seems too much and would certainly recommend this pub.

Not had a decent meal like that from a pub in a very long would deffo recommend! lovely service and staff.
Lovely pub in the centre of town, good selection of beers, good food and friendly staff, well worth a visit
Personally I think this is one of the best Sunday dinners in the Beeston area, simple home cooked food, always piping hot. Also has a great selection of well kept real ales which is always a winner in my opinion.
The pub often has good entertainment on too with live bands playing regularly.
Came in for lunch yesterday meal was absolutely lovely! Prices were good and very helpful and friendly staff definitely worth a visit! Xx
Went to The Malt Shovel tonight for the first time in over a year.
Chris the new manager, (currently only 4 weeks in to managing the pub), has done a fantastic job with the menu, in trying to bring it up to date, with the addition of some much needed modernised dishes, to compete with up and coming pubs catering for a younger crowd.
The portions were absolutely huge, the biggest portions we’ve seen in a long time, (see below photo’s), and for the price, the value for money was outstanding. The starters were the size of a main course alone! It was busy in the outside seating area, with lots of other people enjoying food and drinks in the sunshine.
Every staff member was really polite and attentive, and it was a definite improvement on the last time we visited.
Highly recommended if you’re looking for big portions, for small prices.
Thanks to Chris and the team, we’ll definitely be back to sample some of the other dishes!
Photo’s are on the Visitor Posts bit of this page.
Out standing food and excellent gin selection the new owners offering up new interesting gins to try as well; nettle for us. All in all great food great atmosphere and great prices as well
With an excellent host and staff a friendly welcome is always there. Fine food (locally sourced) good times . . Fun quiz on a Wednesday too. Getting to be a regular haunt
The Malt Shovel has new owners and they've improved the place no end. It was always an OK food pub, but they've really improved the menu.
A few pub classics, plus some more adventurous stuff.
Very dog friendly.
Good place for a beer with five real ales plus craft and the usual mass produced stuff.
The online ordering system works really well and the staff are very happy for you to order in the traditional manner if you prefer.
Great staff and a very friendly atmosphere.
A little gem just off the high street. Great Vibe, great food. Pukka chef cooked Sunday roast - no microwave stuff here! Apple crumble and custard to follow Mmmm. Nice. We'll be back.
I really enjoyed visiting this pub. Staff were friendly and the food was gorgeous. Lovely and cosy atmosphere too. I recommend ! But it is a little more pricey than normal (my meal was £11)
This new team at The Malt Shovel really went out of their way to make us feel at home. We are a family with twin 7 year olds, who loved the activities to keep them busy while enjoyed the tasty food and really nice interiors. Relaxing with a good dollop of fun thrown in. I'm making it my Beeston regular.
We celebrated our child's 1st birthday here and it was brilliant! All the staff were very helpful, the food was great and we all felt very welcomed. It is now officially my favourite pub in Beeston. Thank you Kim and team for all your help!
Decent Sunday dinner. Good value for money. Bit of old man's pub. Parking for about 5 cars. Menu also had some nice tapas and typical pub dishes.
Really enjoy the malt shovel as a local ,for me and the staff are amazing especially Kim as she runs the pub very professionally , I was offered a special which was a fishfinger in ciabatta bread with chips which was really nice and very reasonably priced too , A really nice local pub but I would recommend to anybody passing bye , definitely a must visit pub in Beeston that Kim will welcome you like you are Royals .
Fantastic local friendly pub , staff all absolutely great
Nice atmosphere, but Sunday dinner was pricey ,small and not very tasty 😕
We popped in on Sunday without booking as we heard about the re opening, we had the Roast Beef Sunday lunch and it was really really good. We enjoyed ourseleves and wish Jake and the team all the best going forwards and look forward to seeing you again very soon Thanks
Great atmosphere, value for money, friendly and we had a really nice meal. Only suggestion would be to add a few more vegetarian options to the menu. Definitely worth a regular visit
Cracking pub. Camra discount. Live music. Good choice of beers and gins. Now does excellent food too.
If You want a quality sit down meal, then this is the place to be.
For starters the Decor inside this establishment is fantastic. Very warm feel to it with some quality oak wooded furniture. Great upholstery can be found all round on all seating.
The staff are incredibly friendly and easy to talk to. Which obviously makes your time here even more enjoyable.
But most importantly the food is very nice indeed. I would give a 5 start review however the food portion size isn't very good. £12 for a burger that wasn't very big at all is a bit steep.
However I guess you pay for quality🙂
Love entertainment, good beer choice, friendly staff

The friendly bartender asked me to leave a Google review, so here it is!
Recommended, even in an area well-endowed with good pubs.
I had an absolutely cracking pint of Shipstones Mild which is a particularly flavourful example of the style.
The interior of the pub is decorated in warm, earthy colours with a selection of comfortable places to sit, although like so many places now, there are no bar stools.
Expect a good range of Shippos’ brews plus a guest ale. Why not combine with a visit to The Pottle micropub, just across the way?
