Amazing food with such warm personal service. I hear the chef has worked at Noma. Very interesting combination of flavours with beautiful presentation

So I know 2020 has just begun, but so far, this is the place to beat, best meal I've had all year. I made a dinner ressy two weeks in advance and was all I could think about. Inside its very pretty, modern, but not uncomfortable or stuck up. Everyone at the table opted for the tasting menu (two couples), and on an adventure we went! Adored, from beginning to end, and service to match as well. Cant only wait to return asap!

Folium is a bit off the beaten track between St Paul’s Square and the Jewellery Quarter. It’s a pleasant looking place in a road that’s been gentrified in recent years. The furnishings are a bit austere for my taste, but pleasant enough, though tables near the windows seemed to be a bit cool on a winter’s evening. The service was polished and impeccable, though with 2 front of house staff and only 4 diners that might not be a surprise; however, I’m confident that it would still be the case on a busier evening. We ate the 7-course tasting menu, which was nice. Wasn’t fond of the turnip, but that’s me I think. There seemed to be a lot of creamy/cheesey tasting sauces, but on the whole the menu was coherent and well thought-out. We enjoyed it all ( I particularly likes the smoked eel) and thought that the desserts were very good. Wines were nice, though the prices are relatively high. Would be more than happy to eat here again.

Great service and the quality and techniques applied to the food are generally very good. However, it’s charging Michelin+ prices and there was just too many weak and surprisingly bland dishes to justify that. The cucumber and English Wasabi dish was just tasteless and the ice cream and chocolate mousse dessert is just way too bland and in fact an extremely disappointing way to finish a meal, not nearly enough subtlety or flavour at all when you are paying £250 for two people. Sorry, but compared to recent nearby experiences in the likes of the Wilderness and past experiences in the likes of Lasan, Folium is relying too much on the technical and not enough on the flavour. Service very good though.

The food is sublime and the service was great and very friendly. We had the 3 course lunch menu and it put huge smiles on our faces. The food is worthy of a Michelin Star. We will be returning very soon!

Fantastic little restaurant, we really enjoyed the five course tasting menu that we had. All the dishes were wonderfully presented, and tasted amazing. The service was lovely too, the food and wine were all nicely explained but without it being a lecture, and it was just the right level of attentiveness without being intrusive. We had the wine pairing too, which we really enjoyed and thought all wines were really well matched and some were quite special. My only piece of feedback is that the lights should be dimmer to create a more cosy atmosphere - when we arrived and the place was yet to fill up, it seemed a bit bright.

A second visit to this excellent restaurant. Delicious food, friendly efficient staff and a wonderful culinary experience. Where is the Michelin star - certainly deserves one and more than on a par with the other top Birmingham restaurants.

A previous reviewer wrote that Folium has a "Nordic air" and I agree. Being a fan of both Swedish and Finnish cuisine I would. I had the five course lunch and each course was really well balanced, just superb. I also went for an extra ,Caviar, at £12.50 no snip but worth it. It is some years since I had real Caviar and this reminded me how good it is. Very good and varied wine list with some great glasses. Excellent service.

Saturday night. Tasting menu. Epic. End of. People who complain about portion sizes do not understand how fine dining works and are better suited at a £20 a head all you can eat buffet. Here are some pictures. Thanks.

Unbelievable food and service, I’ve never written a review of anywhere before but this place really deserves it. I can’t wait to go back!

Ok.....You get two sorts of reviews. Great reviews and terrible reviews , very rarely average. We all have our views on what makes a great restaurant and what food we like, but reviews should be objective and should always inform the reader. Folium is a small and intimate restaurant run by passionate young people who care about food and wine. The menu is well thought out and constructed with skill and dexterity. Flavours are balanced and dishes complex without being fussy or difficult. There is a distinct Nordic feel paired with classic English and French styles. Yes, the portions are a good size. Yes, the seasoning is light enough to let the individual flavours tell a story. Let’s not forget the service and warm welcome. It’s a small and intimate restaurant and the passion is clear to see. Well worth a visit and well worth recognition form that well known guide..... well done Folium! See you soon.

My friends and I recently visited Folium for their set lunch on a Saturday. After hearing great things from other friends, we were excited to try the food. Not only was the lunch delicious, it was also fantastic value and great service. I travelled up from London and it was definitely worth the trip! Would absolutely recommend this to others. We can't wait to go back with partners to try out the dinner menu. Thanks Folium and team for having us!

Very small minimalistic intetior. Serving lovely, well presented food exhibiting very good creativity. Wine list has some limitations and food this good would benefit from some upmarket bottles. Service was very good although the flow of courses was slightly iregular. Probably about right price wise for the good expetience we had.

We booked for a family Saturday lunchtime treat and had the five course tasting menu. Other commentators have mentioned the portion sizes and I'd probably agree that they were just the wrong side of satisfying however... the food preparation, presentation and flavours were all sublime and in our view very good value for what we paid. The Folium team members were very welcoming, friendly and professional and all five of us felt that this was one of the better meals that we had experienced. Thanks to all involved for proving a great experience.

Have been itching to try this place out and finally got round to it. Not disappointed at all. Service, food, environment is all excellent. Matching wine was all very good and some were excellent. Would go back in a heartbeat if I was feeling rich enough! A great treat for you and my other half.

We went as a family to celebrate a special birthday and had the five course taster menu. Staff were welcoming and service efficient. The wine list was comprehensive and prices reasonable. The English white ( New Hall?) and Gavi were excellent. Our table was adjacent to the kitchen so we were able to see the dishes being prepared. All courses were excellent and the cheeseboard ( extra charge to the set menu) was good too. The restaurant was small which made for a relaxed atmosphere. All in all, a very enjoyable meal and although expensive, the flavours were fabulous! A Michelin star must be on the cards soon!

Folium is a beautiful setting right in the middle of the very bohemian jewellery quarter. I've eaten taster menus at a number of Michelin star restaurants and I would surprised if Folium doesn't achieve this status in the next couple of years. My only criticism was the portion sizes. I understand fine dining (and specifically taster menus) are reduced dishes but all four diners left the restaurant hungry. Even the bread was only half a bread role each with no further offer of more bread throughout the meal which was pretty stingy. If the price was non Michelin star I would have given five stars but for 80 quid a head and 7 courses wouldn't expect to leave hungry The wagyu beef course was outstanding in taste but didn't last long enough! The mackerel was delicious, the pasta course was delicious. Seriously everything was seasoned to perfection and I'd say along with midsummer house, simpsons and John's house it was one of the best flavoured tatser menu I've eaten. I'd be interested to hear if the restaurant have had any other similar feedback from other diners. Thanks Stew

Amazing food and great service. Surely a Michelin Star 💫 contender in waiting. Would love to return.
