This place has excellent service and very welcoming and friendly staff. The food we ordered was all delicious and well prepared and arrived promptly after being ordered. For the price it is a very good deal. Recommended!
I really enjoyed my time at this restaurant. Authentic and tasty food. I ordered the lamb samosa for starters. It tasted great and the tamarind chutney was just the perfect dip for it. For mains, I had the Makhan Chicken with a side of mushroom ride. The chicken was well cooked and the sauce was just heavenly. It is creamy tomato and cashew sauce. Also, I had a little thing on the house as a welcome treat and it was mouthwatering. Highly Recommended. Service is as amazing as the food.
What good Indian food in UK after a long time!! We started off with Paneer tikka and paneer was succulent just like you get fresh ones in India and it was amazing with beetroot chutney and what not!!
For mains we had aloo gobhi, Paneer Saag and Dal Makhani with tandoori roti and naan and I just felt I was having food in Delhi. It is difficult to find good Indian food in UK, so this was a good change.
The portions are a bit small or you can say that the food is pricey but then again, this is a Michelin star restaurant.
I used to live almost directly above Lasan. It was the ultimate temptation; my arrival home from work each day coincided perfectly with the start of dinner service. Exotic scents wafted out of the restaurant as I lugged my bag upstairs, causing numerous tantrums as I peered into the fridge and realised dinner would be nowhere near that enjoyed by those seated downstairs.
Now this was one fabulous experience from the word Go. I chanced upon Lasan rather randomly, when I was in a last minute fix to reserve a table for a birthday and everything else in Birmingham seemed full or unaccommodating. Although the name seemed questionable (garlic?), I did not have many alternatives and made a quick reservation for Lasan online. I was called back within minutes to confirm and inform me that kitchens would close 30 minutes after my reservation so I should feel free to arrive early. This was a pleasant change after a slew of rude restaurateurs earlier that day.
When I arrived, I was taken in by the sheer elegance of the decor. Understated and minimalistic, yet classy, the ambience is very very inviting. An offer to put my coat in a 'cloakroom' bowled me over and evidenced what I was to expect during the next hour.
This is no ordinary Indian quick bite restaurant. It is a sit-down at ease, several course fine dining experience. We were served pre-starters in the form of papad and pani puri, both delicious to begin with. Our starters arrived shortly after, and I was immediately sold on the marvellous presentation of dishes. The dahi kebab I had were delicious and yet not too filling to leave me unexcited about the mains.
For mains, the Nilgiri Paneer was a seemingly small portion, but rich and filling. It was a wonderful culmination of spinach gravy and tandoori paneer, nothing like I have ever eaten before. The Pahadi Dal was a great combination of 3 lentils, again quite filling. We chose the bread basket, with assorted rotis and also a garlic and coriander naan, which was the best I have ever tasted. Soft and full of flavour, it complemented my meal beautifully.
To add more value to this meal, the service here is outstanding. No complaints whatsoever on this count. Whilst I was leaving, I was asked if I wanted to call for a taxi. While these may seem like insignificant details, I have grown accustomed to the lack of adherence to the spirit of hospitality in the UK dining industry and things like these really make up for an overall incompetence.
I wouldn't call the meal cheap but with the entire experience, I was expecting a larger dent in my wallet.
All in all, I am more than pleased that I stumbled upon Lasan and I am only too convinced that Gordon Ramsay did well by recommending it.
Walking in makes one feel immediately relaxed. The food was an experience, down to a good house merlot. The experience was that of the tongue reawakening, from the immense flavour. This only complemented the same phenomenon that had occurred to the eyes only moments before. The food was satisfying, and the service was attentive, and warm. There was no pressure to buy more than one could eat, reinforced by a message at the end of the dessert menu, not to overindulge.
The morning after my friends wedding, I was very keen to make an early move and drive back down South. My fiancee on the other hand was very keen to have some lunch in Birmingham before heading home. In particular she wanted to have some curry. With nothing planned, I quickly searched a couple of restaurants to see which were opened for Sunday lunch and was pleasantly surprised that Aktar Islam’s restaurant was. I quickly booked a table for the two of us before quickly packing up and checking out from our hotel.
Few restaurants garner local adoration like Lasan. Since a young and ambitious Aktar Islam swept to glory on Ramsay’s F Word five years ago, we have seen his elaborate cooking style develop and timekeeping skills worsen over two series of Great British Menu, amongst many other cooking programmes. Lasan has become synonymous with transporting the curry away from the Balti Triangle and in to more refined parts of the city, taking with it a fresh approach to the cuisine, from improved ingredient quality to elegant presentation. Ask anyone local for a recommendation of where to eat and Lasan will inevitably come up, regardless whether or not they have actually been there. The city of Birmingham likes to claim the curry as our own; its only natural we want one of our local stars to sit amongst the higher echelons.
On a recent visit I have to say I was blown away.
Menu: exceptional
Cleanliness: exceptional
Staff: superb
Cost: tad expensive but worth it.
Excellent. Last night was my second visit with business associates, and having blabbered on about how good it was to everyone, and we weren't disappointed. Can't wait for the opportunity to take my Wife & friends there next time I'm in Birmingham.
I brought my wife to Lasan for her Birthday and must say she was not disappointed.
We had the taster menu and every course was incredible. Depth of flavour and unique takes on food that was really well thought out. Meat and fish were all cooked perfectly and beautifully tender.
The staff were so helpful and couldn’t do enough for us. We needed to be somewhere for another appointment and we’re worried we wouldn’t have time for every course, but the kitchen and waiting staff went into 5th gear and brought out everything extra quickly to ensure we’re were able to enjoy the whole meal (without a single drop in quality)
Perfect meal
Highly recommend for anyone wanting high end, high quality, unique Indian food.
A true gem. Brilliant, authentic yet modern Indian cuisine. Superb starters, mains and spectacular desserts. The service was one of the best we have ever had, especially Vik perfect waiter. Decor also beautiful, relaxed vibes but true class. Highly recommend!
I write a lot of reviews and always try to be fair, as such you have to compare Lasan with the likes if Asha's, and many other "higher end" similar restaurants.
I have been to them all except Opheem which you could argue wouldn't exist if it wasn't for Lasan.
Unsurprisingly each have their plus points, or things I thought could have been better.
The service was very good but it didn't make me as special as some "cheap and cheerful" places do. Some waiters were on their first ever shift and they did a very good job.
In regards to the food, Lasan is as good as anywhere, but that depends on what your preferences.
We really enjoyed what we had, mostly excellent but there were some minor things should have been better.
The "complimentary" poppadoms, incl just two teaspoons, or one each, of yoghurt dip and a very plain naan for example.
Stunning starters, no complaints there. The meat and fish in our dishes was excellent, I have had gravy with more layers and depth of flavour but that depends on the dish.
The desserts really stood out and well worth a try.
No pinot grigio by the glass was disappointing for the wife but Bombay Bycicle IPA was a bonus for me.
The atmosphere on our Friday night was too loud for us, it was more or less full, and wish we could have been seated in the upstairs area. Indeed it's one of the loudest restaurants I have sat in, perhaps some soft furnishings, curtains would be a good idea.
The room was also quite cool, I did mention this when I first walked in but nothing changed. Not just us, the adjacent table thought the same.
The entrance and down stairs toilets don't appear to cater for people with mobility issues. I didn't see any alternative provision but could be wrong so worth checking if needed. The stairs are very steep and the wife added that she thought anyone of a larger size would have difficulty in negotiating the layout of the ladies. It had a refit not too long ago and was this not considered or perhaps they just don't have the room.
10% was added to the bill, although I didn't notice this on the BRF Menu, likewise they charged us the full amount for a dessert that we thought would have been included within the set menu. Looking at dishes on other tables I was also wondering if the meals on the set menu are a cut down version of the main menu?
Note that the parking isn't great in this part of Birmingham.
I’m a native of Birmingham and as you might expect I’ve had innumerable curries and Indian fayre. I’ve also eaten in many of the cities fine dining establishments, however I am shocked to say that Lasan is probably the best Indian food I’ve tasted. That is to say, it was well cooked, well presented, and as authentic a taste as you will get in a fine dining setting. The quality of the ingredients are fabulous, fresh and distinct. Everyone from our server to the host was friendly, attentive and welcoming. The look and feel of Lasan was a surprise, no faux India, more art nouveau with an hint of India. Suffice to say I’m impressed. No notes given
Amazing experience! The manager and servers where absolutely brilliant. The food very good ! We took the banquet menu but we wanted to try something that wasn't in the menu but Atikur made it happen. We discovered alot of different dishes. There was a lot of litle attentions! We loved our experience there. I recommend !
I had the Bihari Beef Kabab, Kasmeri Rogan and Bombay mess for dessert. The food was outstanding, balanced flavours and cooked perfectly. What really bought the place together was the service, top class!
I loved my meal here. The food, service, welcome and drinks were all exceptional. The menu is interesting with choices that go far beyond what you'd usually see. Our waiter talked us through the options and curated some great choices for us all and to complement each other.
My starter of soft shell crab was cooked perfectly, so as to be light yet crisp. My lamb shank main a highlight. It was tender, rich and tasty meat with delicate spicing. The daal accompanying it was perfect.
I'd especially mention the tasty veggie side dishes and wide choice of breads.
The wine list was competitively priced and there were some fun and classic cocktails.
I'll be returning in the near future.
Absolutely fantastic Indian restaurant with great service, beautiful decor and gorgeous food. Attended for a works event with 7 people. Were seated quickly and constantly attended throughout the set meal. Apart from the slightly strange entree (which was something pastry and chick pea based!) the rest of the meal was amazing. The meat was cooked to perfection and all sundries perfect. An excellent meal and possibly the best Indian food I've ever had. Thank you. 🍛🍛🍛🍛🍛
Very nice restaurant in the Jewellery Quarter. There are steps to enter and there is a bar on your left, before going through to the seats on the right. Staff were very fast, polite and welcoming. We were served by a waiter called Vik who was very friendly and have some recommendations. The place was a bit on the costly side so bear that in mind. Very nice restaurant though, the food was nice and served quickly.
Everything was exceptional. I celebrated my birthday at Lasan. I am happy that I chose this restaurant! They also gave me a complimentary dessert 🎂 Food was on point we had chef's taster menu everything was so tasty. Staff was friendly and kept checking on us ♥️
