Pretty good — until the very end: I left a very generous tip on the waiter’s card machine, he inserted the card which didn’t seem to work, so I suggested for him to tap the card instead. As the amount was just under $100, I didn’t need to enter a PIN. He returned my card, mumbled something that sounded like “thank you” and stormed off. Just before we left I asked him if he was okay — turns out he re-entered the total amount when I asked for him to tap the card instead, meaning my generous tip was not part of the final transaction. In other words, he assumed we’d left no tip at all, which explains his sudden (yet somewhat inappropriate) change in behaviour. I apologised and asked if I could still leave a tip using my card — since I didn’t have cash on me — which he said wasn’t possible. We left feeling somewhat disappointed.
