If only all Japanese restaurants would be as great as this one. A favorite for many years now. I now live in Australia but this restaurant is the first place I head when I go home
Tenkaichi’s dining space belongs to the same mould as other utilitarian Japanese eateries. Walls are bare, seating is at communal benches and lighting is bright. Having pulled up a pew in the packed dining room, it was a good ten minutes before our drinks (and simultaneous food) order was taken.
We were looking for a place to eat in Cardiff, and we’ll definitely come back.
The sushi were excellent and fresh.
The spicy beef ramen was delicious.
The service was great and quick enough, even though the chef had to deal with my boyfriend’s allergies and said it would take longer. And the staff were very kind.
I have walked past this place so many times and always gone to the chains in the centre of Cardiff. I took my Mum here yesterday and I will not be going back to the ones in town. The food is incredible!
Absolutely amazing place! I've been to this place at least 5 times and from all the Japanese places I have been to, this place is my favourite! The staff here are so friendly, both in person and over the phone. Service is always quick, great ambience in the restaurant and the food is always delicious and in hearty portions. They also have student discount and a loyalty card.
Food was absolutely delicious, couldn't fault it one bit. The way of ordering was fantastic, and extremely covid friendly. Sushi, sashimi and nigiri were so well made and tasted beautiful. Staff extremely friendly and very helpful. The Arsenal posters 'spot Mr Tenakaichi' in the bathrooms were a nice touch. Thankyou for a lovely evening!
Aside from the skepticism I still hold for this place winning an award for most authentic and best sushi/ sashimi in Cardiff....
The food is very much ok. But I mean it in the nicest way - as in its not the best food by any means, but its still enjoyable and I would come back. The quality of the fish is ok, the salmon marginally fresher and the other (raw seafood) ingredients taste suspiciously like they've been at some point frozen. Then again I wouldn't expect it necessarily to always be super fresh, and they didn't taste bad.
The rice was suspiciously like a cheaper medium grain 'sushi grade' rice, and didn't taste quite right - like the rice had sat around a little while. The sushi seasoning in the rice seemed like a nice balance though.
All the small things I noticed will probably not bother most people, but if they tout and are awarded as being the most authentic I will stand by my skepticism for these kinds of awards, and worry that it suggests that the situation is far worse elsewhere nearby....
Still, putting aside my snobbery, the atmosphere was pleasant and the staff were excellent, and the food really was OK but OK enough to come back once in a while. Still waiting to find a place that does it right as opposed to being 'authentic'.
Edit: While I take onboard the owners response to my nitpicking and am very aware of the importance of health and safety, to a suspicious tongue like mine, the taste of frozen fish still detracts from the efforts.
Edit 2: As promised I did go back and my nitpicking still stands. That being said, for a place in Wales and around Cardiff, I haven't found a better place yet. I'll up my score to 4 for now while I go on a sushi adventure.
Stopped off here for lunch and ordered Ramen and Sushi. Ended up our eyes were bigger than our bellies so the staff gladly packaged our leftover sushi and we had it for dinner that night. Amazing food. Great value... 👌
The best sushi I’ve had in Cardiff. Reasonably priced place with friendly staff. I’ve been a number of times and it’s always quite busy. Would recommend the spider maki. They also serve a large range of other Japanese food but I’ve never got anything that wasn’t sushi and maki
food was nice , service was a little poor, as we was asked what we wanted before we was given any menus, food took a while it wasnt that busy.
very dull atmosphere you all sit pretty much at ok long table with the odd few tables at the side . not a romantic restaurant , ok for lunch with friends I suppose
This is the best sushi I have ever eaten. Amazing value for money, and it carried well via delivery. I'm absolutely becoming a regular, seriously considering hosting my birthday meal there
Food was so fresh and service was quick! Absolutely love visiting Tenkaichi, it’s the best sushi bar in Cardiff! If you love sushi they have a huge variety and they’re happy to cater to additional requests where possible. All orders made fresh to order. The Sashimi is especially delicious!
