Very nice place to stay. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, no issues with temperature or noise like some other hotels above pubs. Beds are comfortable, there's plenty of space to keep clothes and the bathroom is good.
Breakfast is good and served from a reasonable time. The food couldn't be faulted and I can recommend getting a pint or two of level head IPA.
Shower could be better but that is the only fault I can think of.
Definitely would stay again if I was working in the area.
Amazing! No words can say how brilliant is this hotel. Old fashioned standards, quality, professional and friendly approach have returned. Very rarely found nowadays. On check in you are personally shown to your room. Incredible choices for breakfast .. NOT buffet style but a menu, and freshly cooked with local fayre. Joy!!! Everything done with a smile from the team. The attention to detail, the character of the property and the mission for providing top quality has been accomplished 100%
Great location if you want to visit the Newt or area surrounding Castle Cary. The staff and lady I assume was the manageress were very helpful, as was the very tall waiter (apologies I am hopeless with names). Evening meal was tasty and good value for money. The room was clean and comfortable but we couldn't stick the generator noise (or something similar) when we opened the window at night, so ended up being quite hot. Overall would deffinitely stay again and recommend. Also, "IT Taxis" were great...reliable, accommodating and reasonably priced.
The George hotel is a traditional thatched pub with a great range of food and drinks. My friends and I all enjoyed our food, which consisted of fish n chips, beef brisket wellington, chicken Kiev and the meat platter. Along with an apéritif and a couple bottles of wine, we found great value for money. The service was quick, friendly and happy to offer suggestions re the local area. A special thanks to Chloe, who was lovely. Highly recommend the George hotel and would definitely revisit.
Had dinner here. Very good, but like all places, the staff are run ragged. The girl who served us was lovely but looked really stressed. The portions were large and well cooked. Prefer a thinner batter on our onion rings though. Would definitely recommend it.
My family had two evenings during our recent 4 night break at The George. All of their staff are friendly and attentive, with special mention to Harley, who was very CHEERful. the staff have clearly been trained in customer service and led by the management team, who were also super friendly. Top food, top entertainment (quiz night) and top service!
A delightfully charming hotel with the most incredibly warm, friendly, helpful, lovely staff who honestly cannot do enough to ensure your stay is memorable. Pip, Chloe and the whole team literally go the extra mile for their guests.
The food in the restaurant is amazing, providing a first class dining experience and amazing value for the quality that is presented, all whilst maintaining a casual and comfortable atmosphere for the guests.
The breakfast included is unbeatable and always something we look forward to on our stays.
The rooms are spacious, quiet and comfortable and again, great value for money.
The bar is always a wonderful space to relax with a drink and mingle with the friendly locals and their well behaved dogs.
We have stayed the past 3 years in a row and always look forward to returning. It's our Castle Cary home away from home. ❤️
We had a lovely meal last night in this wonderful hotel. The food was amazing and the staff were so attentive! It was made even better by service provided by the lovey Chloe who was our waitress for the evening. A really friendly and bubbly young lady and nothing was too much trouble. Thanks to everyone at The George! We’ll be back!!!
Called to ask of we could order 5 mins before last food orders, the chef kindly waited for my son and I to get there. There was no rush for us to order despite getting there at 9 and the food was amazing. Portions were huge. Brilliant way to celebrate my sons new qualifications.
Thank you so much will definitely return
Great location with antique shop next door. Stayed in 4 poster room decor dated but it works ina mad sort of way. Mattress is not great be prepared for springs poking you. One lady is lovely but no exaggeration she sounds like Yarl off hot fuzz so not much chance of understanding her which adds to the fun and quirkiness of the experience. Breakfast was served by an elderly chap who just finished his shift as an extra on the Scottish version of the walking dead. Car parking is an issue - we ended up on street overnight where we got keyed so I am guessing the locals aren't fans of the hotel overspill. Anyway I would stay again and found the whole experience somehow oddly satisfying
We stayed at the George Inn after our house was flooded, as emergency accommodation. But the stay was much more than a safe space to spend the night - we were overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity of staff, and the excellent facilities. Our room was large and comfortable (including a bath) and the food was excellent. Location in the middle of lovely Castle Cary, close to lots of independent shops. We would have been delighted to stay here even under normal circumstances. Thank you all so much
Fantastic beef Wellington!!
Really nice looking pub friendly staff wonderful food, wish I could eat the whole menu
We go here often to eat. Delicious food, well presented, friendly helpful staff. The manager is delightful.
The George Hotel, located in the middle of the main shopping street is a strange mix. The exterior has a neglected look with very limited on site parking. But once inside it exudes a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The food on those occasions we visited was excellent (and we are fussy) with a wide choice on offer in the menu. There are two main eating areas (beware of a change in levels) and there is a small snug, ideal for an intimate private meeting/meal. The staff, whilst often rushed off their feet, are friendly and helpful. It is understood that this well established hotel/pub/eatery has been acquired by the owners of the upmarket ‘Newt’ other changes are currently taking place in the high street all of which will, for better or for worse, make the town of Castle Cary and, in particular, The George Hotel much more in demand.
Great pub, beautiful inside, wonderful friendly service and delicious well cooked food. One to return to.....many times!
Lovely breakfast for £12
We went on a weds morning. Plenty of space with great service.
NEW REVIEW!! 3 months since our previous visit.........
I reviewed this establishment a few months ago, food, service etc...... and despite the service issues we decided to give this place another go over the weekend.......... again the food overall was good, cooked well, tasted delicious and portions were a nice size, apart from a chicken kiev dish that seemed to be severely lacking in veg on the plate and whose presentation was rather dour looking! The service started well with the young girl taking our drinks order, serving the drinks and then taking our food order.........but then it went downhill.....the waiting period between ordering and receiving our food was again way too long.......taking almost an hour to get the food to our table and to add insult to injury when it did eventually arrive one of our party had to wait an additional 10 mins for her sandwich order.
So here we are again my 4* remains for the quality of the food and my 1* remains for the service.......

PREVIOUS REVIEW....approx 3 months ago.
Absolutely 4* for the food, it was delicious well cooked and presented when it eventually arrived.
1* for the service, sadly the whole experience was let down by the timings on serving food, waiting for almost an hour for our starters to arrive and then a further 45 mins for our mains to arrive, apparently due to staff shortage.
Beer great, food great, service great - what's not to like. Best pie I have had for a long time.
