Review The White Horse - Chilgrove

Sarah & the team at The White Horse are the absolute best! We got married here in August, and they couldn’t have done more to make sure that our day went off without a hitch! From setting up & decorating the venue, to making sure me and the bridesmaids were topped up with bubbles when getting ready, to the gorgeous food & cocktails, and amazing party atmosphere, they really thought of it all! The pub is absolutely gorgeous and every person that came said they would be going back for a stay! Thank you so so much! We will be back! ♥️

Absolutly beautiful .Rooms decorated stylishly and very practical. Out door areas were set out with well thought out areas for privacy or more social seating . Food was absolutely amazing . Best fish dish I've had in England in a long time. Most food is sourced locally and fresh. Staff were efficient ,friendly, and dedicated . Manager (sorry can't remember name) was very welcoming and put up with 3 late night drinkers .Thankyou for that. Met some lovely people and a wonderful dog called Teddy as it is also a dog friendly hotel all in all a joy to stay there. My only slight negative is the 'woodcock ' room only had a bath with a hand-held shower but still a stunning room

Six of us visited for Sunday lunch, the Sunday roast can only be described as exceptional! One of our group was gluten free and vegetarian and she loved her lunch. The service was cheerful ,engaging and professional. We will most certainly be going back.

Beautiful hotel in a lovely location. Rooms were well laid out with comfy beds, fluffy towels, nice shower & good toiletries. The staff were friendly & helpful. Breakfast was very good, however the evening menu was not so good. We stayed 3 nights and the menu was limited and repetitive. Only 6 choices on the menu. 2 fish, 1 chicken, 1 burger, 1 veggie and a vegan. As there is no other restaurant close by its a poor choice when staying several nights. Otherwise I would have awarded 5☆

We stayed here for one night with our large dog and really liked the hotel and the facilities and location were good. We enjoyed both dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and did a nice local walk. The only thing was our room was a bit too hot - it had a fan but wasn’t overly effective. Other than that it was a great hotel and would recommend.

We were only there for one night but everyone was extremely friendly and made us feel very welcome. We had a lot of time to kill in the morning before we moved on to our next activity and we were given a later check out at no extra cost. The beer garden was delightful and created a lovely ambience. Although it is situated just off a fairly main road, it was very peaceful. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend The White Horse to anyone looking to stay in the area or even to spend an evening out.

Walked to the pub for a celebration lunch. What truly great service and knowledgeable staff. The selection of English sparkling wine and local food was very satisfying. The local countryside is perfect for walks and they made equal fuss of our dogs and ourselves. Time spent in this amazing old characterful pub eating their sumptuous food, and imbibing the accompanying drinks is time well spent with good company. Thank you.

Daughter and Son in law held their wedding feast here. Absolutely wonderful service. The staff were fantastic and worked so hard throughout the day. Cannot recommend them highly enough. Beautiful location in the South Downs.

This is the third time my biker friends and I have ridden down from London to the most friendly and scenic pub in the area. The food is great and the staff are very friendly. Hope to see you again soon.

This is a really smart pub with lovely outside seating area, friendly staff and good beers. We had lunch and one of the two dishes was wrong although It was replaced promptly. I can’t fault anything, It’s just very expensive for what it is; £15 for a fish finger bap is a lot, it tasted fine but it was nothing special. I’d definitely visit again for a mid-walk drink and but probably not for food.

We had an absolutely wonderful 2 night stay at the White Horse. Everything was perfection from the extremely comfortable rooms to the exceptionally delicious food! We felt very welcome during our stay and our dog Louis was treated like a king! The location was a perfect base for walking and touring around the beautiful South Downs. Already planning our next visit!

Hotel nestles in beautiful countryside. Very welcoming staff. Good bar and restaurant. Well appointed and comfortable rooms (a little dark for our liking hence 4/5*). All in all great experience.

Great room, quiet, clean, and comfy. The hotel rooms aren't in the same building as the pub. There is plenty of parking available. The food in the pub is also delicious. Would love to stay here again!

Hearing great things about the pub we booked here for my boyfriends mums birthday dinner on a Thursday night hoping for outstanding food and service. What we received was far from it. First of all on arriving the drinks, they did not have the wine advertised on the menu, the drinks then took half an hour. We then ordered nibbles which took another hour. Then before our mains, we started hearing the tables around us starting to complain about there food not turning up, creating a bad atmosphere. The waitress then informed us they were out of hand cut chips and only had French fries which with a £15 meal is not really ideal. On our mains arriving we dived in as we were so hungry for waiting for another half an hour. I ordered the pork which came out raw (red in the middle) and tasted like beef? So I asked the waitress nicely wether it was beef or pork to which she rudely replied pork but it’s rare we’ll get you another. Which doesn’t make you feel very happy when you have eaten half of it and it’s rare pork... my boyfriend ordered a burger and added chorizo to his order and when it came out with none in the burger, we then mentioned it to which two slices burnt in a little dish arrived and tried to charge us for. We then went to order puddings to which the menus had different prices on each, they were out of two desserts and the choices were minimal anyway. So decided to go without. They did give us some money of but very disappointed in the end whilst we had had a terrible night and were speaking to the manager we could see them all messing around and laughing in the kitchen. Very unprofessional and considering the slow service didn’t think they had time to be messing around. All in all lots of little mistakes turning into a disappointing evening, especially with the high end price of food.

Loved it! Booked a last minute stay for Friday, including a dinner reservation. From arrival, we felt welcome and were able to relax. The room was very well appointed, with a very comfortable bed, great amenities and a fab shower. We enjoyed drinks before dinner in the cosy bar area and then had dinner in the restaurant. The food really was top quality; you can tell the chef knows his stuff! Great wines to accompany the meal too. Breakfast (included in the room rate) was relaxed and again of great quality. Would highly recommend the White Horse. The only small criticism we had is that we found the bar/restaurant rather chilly, and we felt our main courses (duck and pork, delicious) could have been served hotter too. Other than that, we loved it! Great service from the team too. Thank you.

Booked a night with cream tea and breakfast! The cream tea was disappointing as scones were very heavy, jam was nice but didn’t like the squirty cream, should be clotted cream. Our room had no hairdryer, no milk for a cuppa until morning! At breakfast we had to wait 35 mins for it, and then it was cold, eggs were solid ! No white bread ! The hot tub was great. But the rest wasn’t worth the money !! Won’t book there again

Amazing place - food was superb and service even better ! My favourite place to eat , drink and stay ! If you can get the comfy sofa and arm chairs by the long burning stove you are in for a wonderful winter treat as well ! I think it's the best run pub I know off which is credit to the landlady and all her team. Highly recommend it to anyone that wants quality in every way and it's very well priced as well . 5* quality all round !

After a wonderful, bracing walk atop South Harting Down we decided to visit the White Horse for an early evening meal after noting from the 2018 Good Pub Guide that we were very close (3 miles). Fabulous pub, extremely welcoming landlord and bar staff who made us feel like old friends (neither of us had heard of the place until ten mins before we arrived), and they made a big fuss of Rona. Fabulous food and table service was outstanding. We will definitely return the next time we take to South Harting Down. Highly recommended.

This was our first visit to The White Horse and wow what a fantastic place full of character from wall to wall rooms clean tidy and catered for all those little things including real coffee ear plugs lol and a selection of board games in the lobby . We were lucky enough to have booked dinner in the evening and the food was wonderful the staff couldn't of done more to please, breakfast was also superb with a large choice to choose from cooked to order and we like the fresh milk left outside the door in morning nice touch . Thanks to all the staff for making our stay very memorable we will definitely be coming back next time copper bath please Many thank Chris Andrews & Jackie Hudson

Had our pre wedding menu and wine tasting evening that included a room and breakfast, just to make sure we were happy with our choices. food in the evening and breakfast was amazing. Wine was great. Staff and their attention to detail was superb and our room was great too... many thanks to Niki for making this all possible at such short notice. So looking forward to the day now...

Had heard this was good so booked it for my Mum's birthday, 12pm on a Sunday. Got a lovely seat outside under the trees and the location was the best thing about the experience. The food was mediocre - fish not cooked properly, pie not cooked properly, a teaspoon of coleslaw with the burger, in fact all the salad offerings were pathetic. The girls serving us were very friendly but when we complained about the food, no-one acknowledged our complaints. Wouldn't eat there again. As is so often the case with places that have a fantastic location, they don't try very hard in all other aspects.

A lovely relaxing and luxurious experience that was well needed! The room was exceptional and copper bath was amazing. The restaurant and bar staff were lovely and food very good. We were so lucky to have such lovely weather and love the fact that you are a dog friendly pub too. We want to come back right away!

A Really nice place to stay and have a meal with drinks. Rooms are very modern and food is 5 star. However staff are really friendly and good but are a little understaffed which leads to very slow service. Would stay again for sure.

Another fabulous stay! Just returned after a night away in a hot tub room and couldn't be happier - indeed wish we were staying for the 7 course NYE feast! Very doggy friendly, food wonderful and all topped off by great walks and a relaxing dip in our private hot tub. What more could you want?!! We and the hound will hopefully be returning again later in the year!

We had a lovely stay at the White Hirse yesterday. Everyone was so friendly and helpful. Our room was great, good sized bed 50" TV, lovely big rainfall shower and plenty of options for beverages in the room. We had dinner. In the restaurant and the food was very good as was the breakfast this morning.

We celebrated my brothers wedding here last week and have to say the venue & staff were excellent which helped to make the day run smoothly. There was no pressure to wrap up the celebrations early as the staff were happy to keep the bar open and party with us. Food was excellent also, especially the evening snacks. Rooms were clean and everyone said how they loved the decor. Breakfast was just what everyone needed and the staff were still smiling! Thank you for making their day beautiful!

Just beautiful! We stayed last minute and the room plus breakfast was fantastic value for money! The two lovely girls (sorry didn't get their names ) were a delight. They were there down the moment we arrived to the moment we left and it was busy! Two little niggles though, there was some dust here and there and the mattress was stained but it had a topper. All in all I would defo stay again I loved it!
