Review George And Dragon Clifton - Clifton

Nick Palmer
The George and the Dragon first came to my attention when I read a review by, food critic, Grace Dent in the Guardian newspaper. It was a glowing review and the author couldn’t wait to return. I share her sentiments completely. The hotel is beautifully decorated and welcoming, the staff are attentive and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble. The bedrooms are just excellent: ours had a roll top bath. The food as you can imagine from my introduction was excellent.

We called in for a couple of Sunday afternoon drinks. The bar is well stocked and the cask ale was very nice. We didn't eat but the food looked very nice too. Definitely recommend.

Excellent little gastro pub in great countryside setting. Staff unfailingly helpful and friendly (thank you, Tina). Food = Excellent, although the homemade humous was a little too salty for my liking. Breakfast was brilliant. Some local ales, fresh air, great food and quaint rooms everything shouts 'come back'. I will!

First class meal and service. We shared pork scratchings and 2 excellent starters. For main course, I enjoyed a steak while my wife and her sister loved their lamb. We were so impressed we also ate 2 puddings between us. Best meal out this year, thank you.

It’s not easy to travel with dogs—unless you travel to the Lake District, and you stay at the George and Dragon. Few places are so consistently welcoming, accommodating, and thoughtful. Situated in a quiet corner of Clifton, near the site of the last battle on English soil, the George and Dragon sweeps away any modern bustle you arrive with. The rooms are elegant and comfortable, the food is superb, and the walls are alive with local history, from bronze-age axe heads to portraits of “Wicked Jimmy”, the earl of Lonsdale rumored to haunt the castle ruins down the road. From this gentle nook you can drive easily to soaring mountains, roaring waterfalls, and secluded lakes. I’m sure I will return to the Lake District, and when I do, I’m sure it will be at the George and Dragon.

We had a lovely meal last night, we all enjoyed what we chose. I thought the canapés were excellent, different and the trout nibble especially so. We had 2 courses and a delicious glass of wine. Good atmosphere, decor and service. Would recommend to anyone who just wants something abit different.

Had a really good roast here the other week. And the apple crumble was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had. Staff are a bit slow at times though it took a while for anyone to come over and times in between starters and main took ages..however they can get away with it because it’s such a nice atmosphere and quite cosy. I guess it was quite busy. However, regardless, I will definitely come back.

Arrived late in our accommodation hence no time to shop for our dinner, Rang the GD, spoke to a lovely lady called Tina who managed to fit both of us and our dog CJ in for a meal. The meal was excellent with a matching service.

Very impressed. This is a popular pub. The food is excellent as is the service. Room was spotlessly clean and comfortable.

Very much enjoyed our stay. Lovely staff, friendly and chatty. Good local beers and a great menu with well prepared food. We liked the open cosy fires

Our group of 6 had a great meal which everyone enjoyed the only difficult part was choosing something off the delicious menu. Very good service. Well done all.

An absolute pleasure to have lunch accompanied with 2 locally brewed ales. The nibbles were all first class, the suet pudding filled with venison, pheasant, partridge and duck was cooked to perfection. No room for a dessert, just a latte. A truly great lunchtime experience 👍🏻

Ticks all boxes for a lovely night away from home with a splendid meal and very fine room to sleep in. Dog not allowed in Restaurant area {fair enough} but we were happy to eat in the bar where we got excellent service. Not cheap but you get what you pay for.😊

Saturday afternoon quick drink. Great place. Really attentive friendly staff. Looks like you need to book if you want to eat - a very popular place! We will be back! Sausage roll looked good.

Upon visiting very recently, we were delighted with the food and service here. Absolutely beautiful. We enjoyed lamb with cockle suet pudding, the fish dish and children’s burger and chips. All exquisite. Staff could not do enough to help and look after us. An absolute gem on our travels!

We decided to stop off at the pub on the off chance we could get a table for lunch. We were lucky and I'm so pleased as it was the best meal we've had in a long time. The food was fresh and made from scratch, it makes such a difference even to something as simple as relish. I believe the meat etc comes from the local farm. The dishes were all so delicious sounding it was hard to choose. The menu wasn't just typical 'pub grub' even being gluten free I was well catered for. The staff were super friendly even making sure the dog was looked after. The pub itself was absolutely beautiful inside. We were so impressed we're going back in a month and I can't wait!

Young chap with blonde hair (don't know his name) behind the bar was very nice. We went 2 nights in succession, once in the restaurant, once in the bar area. Food was delicious and beautifully presented. There was a tv which was thankfully off and background music which was just that, so good for us. It was tastefully decoated and furnished. Overall ambience of upmarket and quality. The weather was abominable and we went at night so can't comment on the outside. We didn't use the toilets. We would certainly return.

The high score was based mainly on the food and the quality of it. The menu was limited with choices and there is only one menu for the restaurant and the bar. The menu has nice options to choose from also. It is expensive but I feel this is probably due to the type of food they are offering. For one tea and a glass of Malbec and two mushroom burgers was £44. The service charge was £4.45. Not sure if they are suppose to ask if you want to leave a tip??? The staff were welcoming upon arrival and throughout. It seems that more staff is needed to cover both the restaurant and bar. Easy place to locate and park.

The food at the George and Dragon was well worth searching out. There was nothing particularly innovative but the combination of flavours in each dish added up to very satisfactory dishes.<br/>
