A cosy pub that serves hearty food…
The Bitter End is a bit of a local legend but I’d never actually been here for food and I can truthfully say that there’s nothing bitter to say about the place!
We had a table booked for 1pm on Sunday, it was important that we went somewhere that didn’t restrict their menu to solely Sunday roasts and The Bitter End certainly didn’t disappoint! The Sunday roast was available alongside the full regular menu and even a few specials.
We did ask to change tables as originally we were plonked right in the middle of the dining area and being a larger gentleman I felt uncomfortable somewhat blocking the passageway for the serving staff and customers, we moved to a corner table which was far more comfortable and made for a much more enjoyable experience.
Our drinks arrived really quickly, two pints of Coca-Cola which were both delicious and full of flavour.
For food; I opted for the BBQ pulled pork burger with chips and my partner chose the Cumberland sausage with chips and gravy.
The food arrived pretty quickly, both dishes looking beautifully prepared; the taste certainly lived up to the appearance too!
My BBQ pulled pork burger was so good, it melts in the mouth and was full of flavour - The bun was very soft and fresh too! I also thoroughly enjoyed the dill pickle, coleslaw and tomato sauce/salsa.
The chips are proper homemade chips, cooked to perfection and they go great with the gravy (when my partner let me dip them in anyway!)
The staff were all really friendly and helpful, I have zero complaints about our experience and I’d happily come back here for food - I’m not a drinker personally but they seem to have a wide range of ales on tap and specialty drinks too.

Absolutely excellent pub. Food a bit on the pricey side but the quality and and portion sizes make it worth it. The staff are really friendly with a great atmosphere.

Didn't eat but currently best pub grub in town. Real ales being well looked after and a good variety.

Blade of beef with spring onion mash, seasonal veg and gravy, kids burger and chips, kids sausage and mash and a steak, ale and mushroom slab pie with veg and chips. The spring onion mash was to die for and the beef was super succulent. The pie was packed and as always the chips are a firm favourite, crispy, fresh and fluffy!! Always love coming to the bitter end and have done for a while now. Staff are really genuinely friendly and helpful, well priced food, drinks and generous portions. Could eat it six times over!! Just make sure you book before hand but they do accept walk-ins. We will be back :)

Busy little pub in cockermouth. The small plates are just enough for a lunchtime treat and not to small 😋 great selection of beers, craft ale and ciders 🍺 we came a number of times over the weekend and was great to hear some fab musicians as it was cockermouth live. Would definitely come again 😊

This is a wonderful pub we visited while on holiday in the lakes. The food is well worth the price, staff were all friendly and welcoming have even booked to go again while up here. Would definitely recommend, also very dog friendly!

Great place for food, some really lovely dishes on the menu as well as traditional fare. A little bit restrictive for those with intolerances - there seemed to be garlic in everything, even the burger - but staff very happy to help and advise on what was possible. Friendly atmosphere and dogs welcome, what more could you want.

Called in today for a late lunch early tea. The food was delicious hot and plentiful. I decided not to have a starter and was very pleased with my decision as I don't think I'd have been able to eat all of my main if I had. The rest of the family did and they were lovely. The mains were equally as good. None of us could manage a dessert!! The staff were lovely, polite and very attentive. I would highly recommend a visit here. I would definitely advise to book if going at peak times. Well definitely be back for sure 😊

Top marks - had to preorder as we were a group of 10 but glad they could accommodate us. All food arrived after about 10 minutes and was delicious. Included good veggie/vegan options. Maybe a bit on the pricey side but you get what you pay for - thanks for having us!

Waited 50 mins (without any comment) for our food when it wasn't very busy, other tables served, no explanation when it did come. Chicken caprese was quite hard. Steak & ale pie was good & filling & gammon steak was nice. It's a very busy place & you need to book but for us a bit disappointed. 🙁

Lovely dog friendly pub with a fairly priced lunch menu. Nice selection of Brewdog beer on draft. They really looked after our dog by giving him treats as well :)
