Reviews The Bitter End Pub

One of the better looking pubs in Cockermouth. Faithful to pub traditions indoors. Staff were a bit slow and atmosphere was very average but it has seating outdoors. Food tasted decent enough but tiny portions. Quite a few beers on tap.

You have to book in advance. Premium eateries in this area with local offerings. Homemade food and welcoming staff who were all nice. Cute space inside and you can tell the food is of an excellent quality. Best pub we ate when we visited. Left very full!

Rung up in the morning as we fancied a roast, and were accommodated without issue. Saw the menu, roast changed to a 'Steak and Ale Pie' and a 'Gammon, Sausage and Egg'. Both came with fresh double cooked chips as requested. Good portions. The pie, my word, the pie was stunning. You could taste the ale and it wasn't overpowering. The Gammon was beautiful and juicy. Dessert had to be the sticky toffee pudding and it did not disappoint. Homemade, the toffee saucy is thick, the pudding itself is moist and huge! The staff are lovely and happy to chat or help however they can. Atmosphere is lovely, chilled and welcoming. Couldn't fault them, thank you. (You will need to lie down for a nap afterwards from the food, be warned haha)

Wandering about Cockermouth Ic n Flic spotted this bar that opened at 4pm. I think they once hosted a micro brewery. They do have a good range of real ale. I had an Eden River brewery 3.9% brown ale. A lovely pub wraps round a central bar. Food looked good. Really cosy pub.

A cosy pub that serves hearty food… The Bitter End is a bit of a local legend but I’d never actually been here for food and I can truthfully say that there’s nothing bitter to say about the place! We had a table booked for 1pm on Sunday, it was important that we went somewhere that didn’t restrict their menu to solely Sunday roasts and The Bitter End certainly didn’t disappoint! The Sunday roast was available alongside the full regular menu and even a few specials. We did ask to change tables as originally we were plonked right in the middle of the dining area and being a larger gentleman I felt uncomfortable somewhat blocking the passageway for the serving staff and customers, we moved to a corner table which was far more comfortable and made for a much more enjoyable experience. Our drinks arrived really quickly, two pints of Coca-Cola which were both delicious and full of flavour. For food; I opted for the BBQ pulled pork burger with chips and my partner chose the Cumberland sausage with chips and gravy. The food arrived pretty quickly, both dishes looking beautifully prepared; the taste certainly lived up to the appearance too! My BBQ pulled pork burger was so good, it melts in the mouth and was full of flavour - The bun was very soft and fresh too! I also thoroughly enjoyed the dill pickle, coleslaw and tomato sauce/salsa. The chips are proper homemade chips, cooked to perfection and they go great with the gravy (when my partner let me dip them in anyway!) The staff were all really friendly and helpful, I have zero complaints about our experience and I’d happily come back here for food - I’m not a drinker personally but they seem to have a wide range of ales on tap and specialty drinks too.

Blade of beef with spring onion mash, seasonal veg and gravy, kids burger and chips, kids sausage and mash and a steak, ale and mushroom slab pie with veg and chips. The spring onion mash was to die for and the beef was super succulent. The pie was packed and as always the chips are a firm favourite, crispy, fresh and fluffy!! Always love coming to the bitter end and have done for a while now. Staff are really genuinely friendly and helpful, well priced food, drinks and generous portions. Could eat it six times over!! Just make sure you book before hand but they do accept walk-ins. We will be back :)

Great beer and Sunday lunch was absolutely perfect. Staff were very accommodating even though we hadn't reserved a table. Very dog friendly with treats and a water bowl for our pup 10/10

Good tradition pub but even though the pub was empty we struggled to find a seat as all were booked. There’s only a few tables outside. Good selection of well kept real ales.

Went here for a Tuesday quiz night and it was very busy! Most tables were booked but we managed to get a space on one of the tables who left after food. Very good quiz, good range of ales and beers and it was a fun evening.

Absolutely the best pub in/by the Lake District. We visited twice during a week in miserable January. First time, on a Saturday, the ‘pirate with the fingernails’ found us a seat by the fire on a busy day. We we struck by the attentive service and friendly locals. Superb choice of beers too. So impressed, we returned 5 days later and were greeted by 3 ladies; the slightly older lady from Yorkshire, one of the managers who writes (with typos 😉) the blackboard and the pretty girl with the teeth braces. I this time explained I’d been on a mission to try as many northern beers during our stay as possible. After trying yet another new pint (they change regularly as a free house) I was gifted half a new pint after they’d swapped the barrels and the end (another half pint) of an outgoing brand. No charge for these. My best friend, our dog, was treated to biscuits and loads of fuss. Food is also superb…cooked on site, no rubbish mass produced microwave stuff, BIG portions, well priced. Dogs are spoilt here too. Pubs that welcome dogs like this are good pubs. A proper northern boozer. No prejudice to us ‘softy southerners’ (in fact, the exact opposite). 100% we’ll be back. These guys deserve all their success.

Called in today for a late lunch early tea. The food was delicious hot and plentiful. I decided not to have a starter and was very pleased with my decision as I don't think I'd have been able to eat all of my main if I had. The rest of the family did and they were lovely. The mains were equally as good. None of us could manage a dessert!! The staff were lovely, polite and very attentive. I would highly recommend a visit here. I would definitely advise to book if going at peak times. Well definitely be back for sure 😊

Busy little pub in cockermouth. The small plates are just enough for a lunchtime treat and not to small 😋 great selection of beers, craft ale and ciders 🍺 we came a number of times over the weekend and was great to hear some fab musicians as it was cockermouth live. Would definitely come again 😊

Booked for a family meal for 7 adults and 3 children. The table was set and ready. The food was really good, hot and plenty of it. The area where we were was nice and quiet, just what we wanted. Thanks for a lovely afternoon.
