We love coming to Colchester for Tymperleys. It's always such lovely food. If you're visiting on a sunny day, the outdoor seating area is an excellent little sun trap with a pretty garden close-by.
The menu consists of the usual favourites; sandwiches, jacket potatoes, salads, etc, but there is always something a little extra on the specials board worth trying! I had the pan-fried seabream with sautéed potatoes and Tenderstem brocoli. It was incredible!
I highly recommend this place for a stop during your visit to Colchester, even if it's just for a coffee and some of their delicious cakes.

As a girl who loves her food, I have been going to the places that I kept saying I'll go try but never did.
So here we are at Tymperleys.
And what a stunning location it is!!
You walk underneath an old carriage entrance & past a lovely bookstore that you can while away many hours in, to get to this fantastic place.
It's set in this beautiful majestic olde worlde house that has its original wooden beams, diamond glass windows & an absolutely gorgeous secret garden that you can walk around & enjoy.
You can sit in or out doors. Rain or shine I always love to sit out by their gorgeous garden.
You wouldn't know the garden was there, you have to walk as I said above through an old carriage entrance & down to the house itself, as you do you'll see the beautiful garden at the very end in an enclosed brick wall square.
It literally is a stunning location!
As for the food....
The menu covers breakfast, lunch & afternoon teas. It may not be the widest of choices menu but for me it has all that I need for lunch.
I usually go for rose lemonade or the rhubarb drinks to accompany my lunch.
Yesterday's lunch I sent for the ham & gruyère cheese ciabatta with salad & chips.
My not so better half went for fish of the day, a herb encrusted haddock with broccoli, kale & new potatoes.
Nothing was left on either plates!!
If I'm in the mood for dessert I will always choose their Eton mess.
O to the M to the G.
It's absolutely delicious!
Prices are very reasonable as well.
I so highly recommend you try Tymperleys out for yourselves.
As always love a rainbow haired girl who loves to try new things. Enjoy!! xXx

A small oasis in the middle of colchester city. The cream tea is delicious, the rest of the menu is of high quality, the staff are friendly and professional. The restaurant is set in an old timber framed building with gardens to dine out side if you wish, I believe this was once a clock museum which closed around 2011. A quiet place away from the hustle of the city.

Fantastic location. So beautiful in the morning when the sun shines through the windows..
Good to put your headphones on and work. Staff are happy to let you stay as long as you'd like.
Food is good, but nothing out of this world.

Had a great time at Tymperleys, suitable for a special occasion, but slightly on the pricier side I would think for what they offer. They do have a lovely range of tea, cake and breakfast/brunch selection but nothing especially memorable. The interior reminds me of the historic Lavenham houses, which gives it a charming character, and has a superb courtyard for a sunny day, which is what won us over. We could sit and work on our laptops while soaking in the sun and the overall lovely atmosphere. Definitely worth a visit on a nice day.

This is my most favourite place, a hidden gem located in the heart of Colchester. Amazing old building with lovely grounds. The food is always good and fresh. Staff are very polite and friendly. Highly recommend!

Nice ambience to have lunch in a heritage place (used to be a steward’s house of Duke of Norwich), and nice food!

We popped in here as we was walking past, particularly as we was talking about the old clock museum that used to be inside - curiousity got the better of us so we went in for drink and cake!
It was busy inside and we had to wait a few mins to get a table but staff were welcoming albeit they seemed a bit rushed. The building and rooms are nice but also felt a lityle cramped (at least in the first room where we was). They didnt seem to be botheted that little man (2 yrs old) was with us - this can sometimes put us off going in places!
In terms of cake there was about 6 options in menu and about 4 on the specials board. Wife went with choc orange and I went for a raspberry cheesecake brownie (I was intrigued as I like both cheesecake and brownie!!) It was indeed very nice...!
Service felt a little rushed during our visit - bill was given to us straight after finished cake (whilst little man was licking crumbs from plate) but we hadnt actually finished our drinks.
Wife reported no loo roll in toilet when she went! (A plesant way to end a review..?)
All in all an OK experience.

Beautiful room and friendly staff. Soup would have been easier with a soup spoon rather than the tablespoon I was given (however I do have a big mouth!)

This is a beautiful old building steeped in history. It is an oasis of calm away from the rain and shoppers outside.
We had a full English and a veggie breakfast and both were really nice and well presented.
The staff were friendly and it was altogether a lovely experience.
Not sure about the modern glass entrance doors though

Had the loveliest afternoon tea here this afternoon for my mum's birthday, gorgeous selection of sandwiches, loads of cake and 4 scones! With tiptree jam and proper clotted cream! We went for prosecco afternoon tea and we're given a very generous glass of lovely bubbly each. Gorgeous setting and amazingly friendly staff but what was most incredible was they brought my mum a brownie on a plate with "happy birthday" written on in chocolate, it looked amazing! I didn't request this I simply told them it was for her birthday and they did such this lovely thing she was so so happy so thank you tymperlys! Would highly recommended ❤️

Lovely tearoom in the heart of historic Colchester. We needed somewhere for lunch and found this perfect spot nestled down an alley. Beautiful building and very old-fashioned inside (in a good way). The coffee was good. The food was very tasty; I ordered the Jacket Potato with smoked mackerel, creme fresh and spring onion; this was lovely but I would suggest pulling apart from mackerel and mixing it together, like a crab topping.. My wife got the Pastrami Sandwich, again super tasty but perhaps less coleslaw on top would have been better. Just a few tips, constructive comments but certainly no flaws.
