Fantastic place. Lots to see, lots to touch, lots to hear. There is also great opportunity for entrance a 2000 years old roman temple foundations! There is lunch room where you can buy a hot drink and enjoy lunch if you bring one with you. Kids going to love this place as there is lots to do for the
Don't leave reviews that often but really felt the need too, given how impressed I was. There is a fantastic amount of interesting historical pieces and facts to look at and also a lot of interactive activities for the children to get involved with. I was fully expecting my children 12 and 5 not to
Excellent museum and castle, well worth the entry fee, very well informed and interesting staff, Colchester has a fascinating history. Took us a couple of hours to walk round, Only down side is no dogs are allowed in the grounds at all which was a shame.
A wonderful place to visit if you're interested in the history of Colchester. There is a wealth of archaeological artefacts. I recommend paying the extra £3.85 to do the tour of the vaults, which are the original foundations of the Roman temple. The roof gives excellent views over Colchester City ce
Excellent museum with lots of interesting exhibits. We also went for the guided tour with the extremely knowledgeable and handsome Ray, who really brought history to life - well worth the extra few £s for the tour. Have already recommended to others.
Not your "usual" castle type experience, large rooms, huge battlements, endless doorways, ramparts etc but it's still something to get your head around for the period. Great informative tour and worth while. Plenty of information as you walk round, friendly staff, clean toilets, nice place to spend
Brilliant museum and castle full of Roman, Saxon and Norman history. There's lots of exhibits to see, for £1 each you can rent a tablet for an interactive experience. We paid £3.75 each for a guided tour of the crypt and roof and it's totally worth it. The staff are friendly and helpful plus there'
Fantastic place. Modern, informative and interactive range of displays, the best I've seen in any castle. Great place to bring the family. Every corner of the building is crammed with things to see and do. Also lovely gardens outside.
This castle has years and years of history. It has a great story to tell from Roman occupation when Colchester was the capital through the Norman times to today where it is now a museum. Lots of items to see and they do a great job in bringing history to life Well worth the visit
Very interesting place and you really must do the tour which covers the cellar and Roman foundations. Loads of stuff to see and not too expensive. Not really so good for very young children, as you would probably expect, but they do have a few things to keep the kids amused.
A beautiful day to start at the pond, walk up the hill, through the park, to the Castle. Plan half a day, at least. Lots of history in this, at one time the center of the fledgling England, by some accounts at least. 🤔😊👍
Interesting castle that was built by the Normans on top of Roman ruins. There is an exhibition space which covers over a thousand years of history.
The guided tour is worth it. You’ll be able to visit the foundations of the and clime to the top of the castle for a beautiful view of Colchester.
Really interesting day out. Definitely go on the vault and roof tour if you can, luckily the man on the welcome desk told us about it as I could not see any signs with the tour times on them. The tour guide was lovely and the vaults very interesting, the roof tour could have been a bit longer with m
Colchester castle has a great historical importance and is believed to be Europe’s largest Norman remains, built on the foundations of the Roman Temple of Claudius. It is currently a museum and has lots of good collections from the time of Roman rule. Please note: there is an entry fee.
Excellent museum. Nicely laid out abd the artefacts have recently been changed. Easy access into main building, lift to 1st floor. Only inaccessible places for those with mobility issues are the stairs to the roof and the Roman temple remains in the basement...these are tours which are bookable.
Where you can literally touch history spanning 2,000 years. A complete castle set in beautiful grounds in the heart of Colchester. Great for children and convenient for the heart of the town and railway, and paid parking. Bonus... foundations of temple to Claudia's, Norman origins, Civil War and Qua
Well worth the visit, my 13 year old son and 9 year old granddaughter were totally engaged from the moment we entered. A local gem
