Review The Assheton Arms - Downham

My other half saw the seen this place in a magazine and fancied trying lunch. Very pleased we did. Service was very good. The food was terrific. I had modules, Elaine, risotto. We were very happy with our choices. My mussels were plentiful and tasty. The accompanying broth was top drawer. We had a bottle of rose too. For dessert I had the gin trifle, no disappointment there and Elaine was equally happy with her chocolate cake. When we visited the weather was beautiful so we took advantage of the tables outside. I had a couple of pints of their bitter. Sat outside, enjoying the fresh air, looking towards Pendle Hill. A perfect place to enjoy a leisurely lunch.

Went for a gorgeous meal here last weekend. My husband and I both had the curried chicken with Bombay potatoes and it was gorgeous. Did not stay here so unable to rate the rooms .

Had a lovely meal yesterday early evening with my Mum and husband. Food was gorgeous Mum had the lamb, my husband had the caesar salad and he was asked if he would like anchovies as not everyone does and I had the ploughman's which was huge . We thought the food was excellent value. Lovely helpful staff. Well worth a visit.

Lunchtime visit on a sunny autumn day. Beautiful setting, historic feel to the village and this lovely country Inn. Very nice varied menu with specials available. I had the very tasty ham hock with crispy hens egg. My wife enjoyed the mussels followed by the nocchie pasta, my main was the steak pie. Delicious food with a lovely house merlot. Highly recommended 👌

Spent a night here on Thursday. We had the Dinner,Bed&Breakfast deal which was £165. The location is stunning and the pub lovely and cosy with real fires to keep you nice and warm. The food was delicious, we had fish pie and lamb shank pie👌 breakfast is a choice off the menu plus cereals, pastries and yogs. Really nice The room was big and cosy with views over Pendle Hill. Its really quiet at night so we had a great sleep. The whole stay was fantastic, the staff are really nice and helpful. Its a great location for walkers. We will definitely be returning

Lovely lunch time meal. Sat next to 3 miserable, middle aged women with 2 dogs who wolfed their meal down but split their bill 3 ways to £12.63 with no tip because their order had been inadvertently missed and the staff didn't "apologise enough" I had to sit on my own hands and clamp my own lips between my own teeth. Luckily I'm 58 and have my own teeth and lips, not them ridiculous chalk white slabs and over filled Cumberland banger kissers, so they got off lightly. The ox cheek pie was so tasty. All the food was outstanding and the service was great. Will definitely return.

Lovely place & service good. Wouldn’t fault that. I was told the men’s toilet was disgusting though. Seafood platter is not worth £26.95 so don’t bother ordering it. Sunday roast was good but the carrots were - puried - not mashed- far too sloppy. The salty fries were processed frozen food type. Shame really for a fairly expensive place. Expected more quality. It was my sisters birthday too. We were never even offered a free glass of Prosecco for her or a birthday dessert on the house, even after I had purchased her an £80 bottle of champagne too. We had a nice time but wouldn’t travel again to it as there’s other better quality foodie places nearer to us. I think they have a few things to smarten up on sadly. Great day out at the Downham Hall open day though.

What a superb experience here. The setting and location is absolutely idyllic. The food was fantastic and the staff were attentive courteous and service was top notch. Will absolutely be coming here again soon. Special shout out to Chris (possibly the bar or shift manager?) whose service was second to none and couldn’t do enough to make us feel welcome.

A super pub/hotel in the prettiest of places. The restaurant and bar are homely. The food is really REALLY good. The menu is varied. We stayed for Two nights and can’t wait to go back.

After staying here just before the Easter weekend,I can definitely recommend this doggie friendly place to stay lots of nice walks from here or simply sit back and enjoy the lovely village. The room was lovely, with everything you need ,tea and coffee making facilities (good selection of teas and coffees) hairdryers in the room and lovely Orla Kiely toiletries in the bathroom. A nice big shower ( not a tiny cubicle) There is a garden just off the courtyard for your four legged friend to nip in last thing at night and first thing in the morning . We booked dinner bed and breakfast - with your dog dinner and breakfast must be taken in the bar areas , rather than In the restaurant, but don’t let this put you off !! There is a lovely wood burner for cold days and evenings with lots of nice places to sit . In the summer the outside has plenty of seating with fab views of the area . The food was all very good and I believe the menu changes daily ,this is a fish restaurant but there were options - pies, curries, steak and much more !! The staff were all very helpful and friendly both at dinner and at breakfast. Breakfast couldn’t be faulted The only thing I would say is why these days do places call themselves dog friendly but then charge an extra £15 for the dog per night !!! They don’t offer anything special for the dog , I really do feel if they do this they could at least provide dog bowls in the room , maybe a towel or blanket/bed and definitely some doggie treats !!! This said I would definitely stay here again and indeed hope to do so soon

The food was excellent and a decent portion. Pity the Seafood Pub doesn't have more actual seafood on the menu. Where are the oysters and Mussels? There's a seafood platter but you have to order it 48 hours in advance. Shame.

Our expectations were sky high - this was our first visit The suite (#4) that we were shown to was excellent - but lacked a Pendle Hill view The staff were brilliant - professional but friendly Booze-wise, there was a good, but predictable array of gins and a well priced wine list with plenty of choice Sadly it fell apart in the food department - admittedly it was 6pm on a Sunday evening, but a number of items weren’t available, the starters (langoustine and crab waldorf) were ok but not great value for money, the mains (roast beef, cod with curried pumpkin and watermelon and proper chips) were excellent, the cheeseboard (lack of) choice was criminal for a Lancashire restaurant and breakfast was lukewarm with overcooked bacon and sausages So disappointed ...

This small gem of a place, never fails to impress us each time we visit with wonderful food, great service and warm and welcoming atmosphere - would highly recommend.

Myself and my partner had amazing food here (the best fish I've ever had) and the staff were friendly and very informative about the food and wine. The only problem is, my partner doesn't really like fish!! But he loved the atmosphere and said he would be coerced to go back again so long as I take him for a beef pie the next day ;) oh and the views are great and the soft furnishings inside are in keeping with the area (rustic and quintessentially british) and I, we, definitely recommend it ;) x

Fantastic pub in a beautiful village, friendly staff and gorgeous food from a really great menu. Well worth the drive out. A stay over in the accommodation is on the bucket list.

Went for my birthday , manager was lovely but had problems from start to finish with staff, food, drinks , room, breakfast. Sent an email on Sunday morning detailing all of the problems we had to help them improve for the future with the staff and had no reply. Lovely place but very bad customer service. such a shame.

Despite the power cuts and the snow, the deputy manager and the staff went above and beyond to make our stay and dinner the best it could be. My only feedback would be that an apology for the lack of heating overnight and the subsequent cold shower in the morning was missing. The food was lovely, and the chef was even using ‘alternative’ methods to get everyone’s meal done and served hot. We would visit again, but I think if I was faced with the risk of a cold shower in a cold room in the morning again I might give the rooms a miss and just avoid having a glass of wine instead!

Went for lunch on a cold Friday for a Birthday Lunch! The staff were very friendly and welcoming and we had a lovely time! The food was great and the wine selection is great! Definitely worth a visit!! Thanks xx

Waited over an hour and a half for 4 starters which were fairly poor, considering this establishment boasts one rosette..... We ended up walking out as the likelihood of an early meal was turning into the prospect of being here all evening. Ultimately the poor review is down to the poor service, nobody came to inform us of the long wait. And then we received some snide comment from the manager (With glasses) regarding how he felt we should've paid for dreadful service, drinks, 4 mediocre starters plates of food and over an hours wait Three of the four people in our party work in the hospitality industry, so we couldn't have been more understanding. I appreciate how hard it can be to manage staffing with the inconsistent weather, and on this occasion the nice weather caught you off guard. How ever, putting waiting times on food and telling customers there will be delays on food would be an idea, we would have gone elsewhere and returned on another day - no issue. Our belated fathers day meal was completely ruined due to cramming everybody who came in to order food, was allowed to order and then made to wait without any explanation or time frame on how long before the next course. Really, really poor all round

The accommodation was excellent, lovely room, excellent bathroom. The food in the restaurant was delicious, and well above standard. Just sitting by the log burner by the bar in a comfy chair sipping an evening nightcap was so relaxing. Staff. Wet attentive, and excellent with their wine choice. Highly recommended!!!

Had a wonderful birthday meal with my family in the private dining room. The food was fantastic and the staff very friendly and helpful. Wonderful experience all round.

Staff were excellent and very knowledgeable. Good selection on the menu. Food was very tasty. The village where the pub is situated is idyllic and is used as a backdrop on a number of tv period programmes(not an overhead cable in sight)

Had a lovely lunch here.just soup and sandwich but so fresh and tasty-really good
I enjoyed this meal, and am pleased to see the Assheton Arms back in action and very busy again, though I'm not sure it really merits the unqualified, almost adoring praise it seems to get in many quarters.
Assheton Arm’s hand sliced smoked salmon, watercress, lemon & cracked pepper – beautifully smoked salmon, produced onsite in their smokehouse using a blend of cherry and mesquite smoke. Perfect smokiness for me; the flavours were prominent without overpowering.
