Booked this small but extremely accommodating restaurant for the 1st time for my parents surprise 50th wedding anniversary. Did a lot of research to find the perfect restaurant as they are extremely picky when it comes to dinning out - with very different tastes but always expecting a high quality and service, yet like a warm and friendly atmosphere.. Well I couldn't have chosen a better restaurant!!! I honestly can't rate this restaurant or the team behind it high enough! From the initial enquiry, through to booking then onto the fantastic reception, service and amazing food on the night itself, I even received a lovely follow up email to check we had enjoyed our meal! spot on !! 1st class !! Food was thoroughly delicious and beautifully presented.. We were a party of 16, all ages from young children (7&9 years) young adults (20&21 years) through to middled aged and older - all were catered for in a relaxed environment, nothing was too much trouble! Plenty of choice including a children's menu, all perfectly cooked by the chef - my compliments!! My parents asked me to write this review as they aren't very good with technology - I would have written it anyway, we will most defiantly be back and will be spreading the word.. best restaurant we have visited in quite some time.. I wish I could post some pictures of the food on this review - instead I urge u to go and find out for yourself just how fabulous this hidden gem in Durhams heart really is !!
My husband and I ate here last night for the 1st time and we were not disappointed. really friendly staff, lovely atmosphere and gorgeous food! the best chocolate brownie I have ever eaten!
Went for our 30th Anniversary and it was fab staff nice and friendly and food was great definitely recommend a visit .
Fantastic place, small but lovely. Food was fabulous and the service was just as good. Well recommend.
A huge thank you for Gary, Vanessa and Abby at restaurant 17 for making the start of my twin sisters hen party a huge success. All of the staff went out of their way to accommodate all our extensive requirements and best of all the food was totally yummy.
Great atmosphere fabulous food well presented in an intimate setting. The service was excellent and the staff charming. We dined very well and with an excellent choice of house wines had a great evening. Value for money EXCELLENT 5 stars
Had a lovely meal on Saturday steak was beautiful, cooked to perfection. Staff were really attentive.
Gorgeous Valentines meal. The food was absolutely delicious. Love this little restaurant.
First time at Restaurant 17 - but wont be our last. Absolutely gorgeous meal, two lovely waitress'. 10 out of 10.
Amazing food and service! Favourite restaurant in Durham
We went to this restaurant last night and found it to be superb in every way. Excellent food, friendly, helpful, knowledgeable staff and tasteful surroundings. Will definitely be back. A special thank you to the waitresses who noticed that I was wearing a '40' badge - and came out singing 'happy birthday' with candles on my sticky toffee pudding. A nice touch which makes an evening out that little bit more special.
Fabulous little find...We will be back. Staff lovely and the food is amazing...
Never knew that this fantastic place was here but will be back. Great food, great service and a great atmosphere. Pleased we found it
Delicious food, great friendly service. Highly recommended!!
Small and quaint with fantastic food and great service. I have a lot of food allergies and intolerances and they couldn't do enough. The food was brilliant, very tasty, well presented but a good quantity. This is now my favourite restaurant in Durham.
Delightful, cosy restaurant with small but perfectly formed menu. The service is as good as it gets and the standard of food is absolutely excellent. Prices very reasonable for such nice food with mains from £18.
Bit of a 50s James Dean rock’n roll theme throughout which is subtle but adds atmosphere. Comfy seats and nice decor throughout.
No car park obviously it’s in centre of Durham. Well kept WC facilities.
You can’t add tip to card payments so be sure to bring some cash as you’ll definitely want to leave a tip!
Lovely little restaurant on Eldon bridge down a small set of stairs, holding around 6-7 tables this is a small restaurant with personal service and a refined menu which isn't overlay complicated. Food was cooked well, vegi were lovely, very well informed on changes to the main menu. Service was great, my only negative, no windows and tables a little close together, but definitely worth going and prices were reasonable.
We ate a delicious meal here to celebrate our daughters graduation. Everything was cooked to perfection. We were convinced the chef was french as the dishes were classic , fresh and tasty. The vibe in this basement restaurant was really relaxed and ambient. Our host was Gary was on top form. He gave us perfect meal perfect recommendations, was a good laugh and had great chat. What's not to like?
This is a tasty option just off Elvet Bridge. It’s s cozy interior. We arrived at 8 o’clock & they were sending staff home so we weren’t sure we should stay to not be an inconvenience. The manager assured us it was fine. We’re glad we stayed it was a very nice dinner. I tried the soup which was all greens (broccoli, spinach, etc..) which was nice. For entrees my son had the sirloin which he enjoyed, my wife had the risotto & I had the slow cooked beef. All of which we thoroughly enjoyed.
1st time here and can't recommend it enough. The food is superb, the duck is amazing and the chocolate orange cheesecake is so so nice.
What a hidden gem of a place.
Gary was the perfect host.
The food is sublime and cooked to perfection. The Korean Cumcumver said with a chilli dressing was perfect with the right amount of heat. The king prawns had a fantastic Asian style dressing on them that brought the dish alive.
The steak was perfectly cooked, with amazing chips.
The wine list was well priced and the Cote Du Rhone was absolutely delicious.
Fantastic restaurant. Equal parts cosy & romantic, with great decor. The service was excellent - personal and attentive. The food was delicious with generous portions. A compact wine list was available by the glass or the bottle. Bonus points for a cool soundtrack curated by the owners. We loved this place ✌️
Wonderful meal with our 9 yr old son (who has a passion for fillet steak!)
Great food, lovely setting and incredibly friendly and efficient service. Wine list very short but was good and ok priced.
Highly recommended and for the quality of the food (from my Londoner perspective..) reasonably priced.
Excellent, personal service and delicious food. The sticky toffee pudding was especially good.
What a wonderful hidden gem. We were so lucky to find this restaurant on our recent visit to Dunham. The food and ambulance was excellent. Thank you to all the staff who help this restaurant such a fabulous place to eat.
Food was delicious! Had the poached halibut with tagliatelle and roast chicken with black pudding for mains followed by lavender panacotta and lemon polenta cake with raspberry sorbet and poached pear. Service was always friendly and good, but got a bit busy towards the end. Atmosphere here was very good - great for large and small groups.
Ate here yesterday with my (long suffering) wife. Food, wine and service were superb….. and the price was reasonable. I implore anyone who reads this, assuming they are in the market for a quality meal in Durham city - book this restaurant and go. Enjoy the fact that, in no other city can you just pop down a short flight of stairs and have such a high quality, intimate meal with a loved one at such a reasonable price. The pork belly is truly spectacular.
Great restaurant. The staff were really friendly and accommodating (we needed to change the size of our group and that was no problem at all). Food and wine were excellent and good value for money. Would highly recommend this place.
Wonderful meal fast efficient service. Mains came served on a very hot plate. That makes a nice change, can't stand cold food on a cold plate. Would recommend.
First Class. Very impressed. Delicious food. (I had the black pudding, lamb rump followed by the lemon posset and a coffee last night). Every course was delicious. My husband had the steak for his main and it was cooked to perfection. The night before we had eaten at a restaurant owned by a famous ‘TV’ chef, but this meal beat it hands down. Friendly service and lovely deco. We were really glad we had chosen this restaurant for our wedding anniversary meal.
Excellent service, delicious food, highly recommended..... we will be back!!!
Walking across the beautiful Elvet Bridge, with its calm river flow beneath and Ancient trees in full foliage on its high banks, sets you up for a wonderful night at the restaurant.
The interior is seductively lit, and the staff immediately set you at ease with their welcome.
The menu covers all expectations, but is concise. Despite this I struggled to choose between the options and I was delighted to accept the Managers recommendations. However, my girlfriend's choice won the day with a piece of seabass with the most perfect char and smoked garlic.
The service was better than I've had anywhere, and we were escorted to the lovely bar and terrace next door to ensure the ideal transition in our evening.
Thank you R17!
