What an amazing restaurant! The food tasted really, really good. The prawns biryani was super fresh, the chicken curry was yummy, and the chapatis were a good choice. I loved the cookies they served with tea. The staff and service were nice. The place was a bit small inside, but when the food is this good, the size of the restaurant doesn't really matter. It's a great choice if you're in Edinburgh.

Short version: Best lamb chops! đ
Long version: Mother Indian restaurant is a delightful culinary experience. The ambiance is warm and inviting, and the staff is friendly and attentive. The menu offers a wide selection of authentic Indian dishes, each bursting with flavor and made with fresh ingredients. I particularly enjoyed their butter chicken and garlic naan, which were simply divine. The portions are generous, and the prices are reasonable, making it a great value for the quality of food you receive. Whether you're a fan of traditional Indian cuisine or looking to explore new flavors, Mother Indian restaurant is a must-visit in Edinburgh.
Anil Mishra
The food was great, good flavours and if you ask for chillies - it can give you the thrills your seeking. Note, plain naan wasn't the best l, but the garlic naan is a must. Butter chicken is also good to try.
It was slightly disappointing that after making a reservation, we still ended up waiting for 30min to be seated. The manager did well to move us (4) to a larger table as soon as it was made available.

Ok, there was 10 of usđ€Ș It all got a bit chaotic. Orders were mixed up to the point where it just became a big everybody share buffet. No big problem.Food was very good. Waiters were friendly and tried manfully to get it right. We were of no help at all.đłWe had a variety of chicken and Lamb dishes which followed some excellent Poppadums and Veg pakora Peshwari Nan and Cheese Kulcha were also very tasty. This was a pre concert blow out. For 10 people with some kingfisher beers the bill was ÂŁ305 đ±
Armin
A great Indian restaurant with a new twist where the foods are not that big and you can chose various dishes to try. At least that was told to us đ the portions were quite good with a great price. We didnât want to have a huge meal so we went for three dishes and one of them were a starter with twi types of rice. All of the dishes were perfect. Cooked to perfection, served at the correct temperature and pretty fast. I loved the vibe and the waiters were great! Definitely will try this place again if I needed Indian đźđł in EdinburghđŽó §ó ąó łó Łó Žó ż

This restaurant was highly recommended by our driver from the airport who is East Indian and Scottish. I went there for lunch a little after opening and received a table. It filled up quickly. The service was friendly but a little slow and I had to wait for the check for a bit but the food was delicious. I had the butter chicken with tender pieces of meat and a smooth, savory sauce. I paired it with garlic naan. It was a great recommendation and also nice that itâs off the Royal Mile and less busy.
Sunny Simantov
Had a delightful Dal Makahni with Garlic nan, for reasonable prices. Service was very good. Place was rather quiet and convenient, not crowded. Just a short distance from a main street.
Marta Blanco
Delicious Indian food. The lamb it's very good cooking and I love the taste and the spices. For me the garlic naan is the best option. You can't leave without try the curry and the mango lassie đ.

The restaurant is very nice with lots of seating. The staff was very friendly and attentive. I was very pleased with all of the dishes they prepared. Everything was so flavorful and delicious. The prices were reasonable too!

Excellent food and service from a restaurant we had wanted to visit after being down to see the student , we had 8 seperate tapas type meals and all were excellent especially the chilli chicken Dosa
Hywel Maslen
Decent Indian to visit and good with the smaller plates tapas style which let's you taste a few more options than one big curry. Very busy for a Monday night which can only be a good sign. We had a superb chickpea dish and the Chicken Tikka which tasted fresh. Lamb and prawn dishes also Very good. Decent draught beer.

The food is super super delicious. Ambience and the staff is nice and warm. The first Indian restaurant which I like and the masala tea is must try.
Joshua Bradshaw
Really great food. It definitely looks like you'll want reservations if you don't want to wait a long time for a table.
About 2 tapas per person works out well - a little more if you're hungry. For two of us, four tapas total and two drinks was 50 pounds.
Fairly typical level of heat, excellent flavor on everything. Whisky selection is limited but good.

Chose Mother India's Cafe for my birthday dinner and was not disappointed. We were served fairly quickly, all the dishes were amazing with various flavours and the wine was exquisite as well.
Couldn't have asked for anything better.
Mary Nickless
The food was delicious! It was tapas style, we ordered 4-5 dishes and shared amongst the 3 adults. Got to try several different dishes. The chili chicken dosa was to die for and so was the mango chutney. Overall everything we ordered was fabulous! The service was fantastic. We didnât have a reservation and they found a way to seat us anyway. Great place & a great experience! I recommend making a reservation, like basically everywhere.

Some of the best Indian food we've had! Chicken basil curry was amazing!

I passed by, and the smell bewitched me. I was not disappointed. Delicious, well prepared food with fast and courteous staff. Absolutely worth the walk

Loved the courteous staff and the delicious food... Although food variety being offered is little less; but whatever they serve is at par..! A calm and nice place to spend a great eve... I wish there was music in the open area too..

Authentic indian food, with proper recipe made our evening. The pakodas were really nice and freshly cooled in gram flour, unlike other restaurant the tomato puree was properly stirred and cooked before serving.
Akhil
Fantastic Indian food. The place is a bit cramped. But overall a very good experience.

One of the worst places to have Indian. Itâs not even authentic and they charge you way too much for petty quantity.<br/><br/>The variety for vegetarian is not that great either. Save your time and money, try Dishoom instead.

Was recommended to me by our Airbnb host, and did not disappoint. Seriously, the food was the absolute best Indian food. It was so good that we are there twice. Definitely worth a visit.
Aditya Karwa
very nice Restaurant for indian food , cosy and warm , very much centrally located resturent , not as big as Dishoom but equally good food , with simple routine choice of food and drinks , equally popular in local citizens.
Amit Malik
The food is ok but not Indian style at all . It is more a mix preparation. An amalgamation of various cuisines . The naan is very middle eastern in preparation . Chicken pakora and masala squid were nice . Main dishes were ok . The biggest disappointment was the service especially the lady who manages the seating . I am sure there are better options in Edinburgh for Indian food .
Sarah Mk
Delicious authentic tasting Indian food. Great tapas style menu so that you can try lots of different options. The staff were lovely the service was excellent.

Book your table in advance to get better service. Place is always crowded. Trying Indian food is recommended. Ambience was good. Price is a average.

After staying at Edinburgh for 10 long days , I started craving for Indian food . Guess what ? Someone referred me for Mother india's cafe . It is known to be one of the oldest Indian restaurant in Edinburgh. <br/><br/>The restaurant is huge and looks like it's always full with waiting queue. However, we managed to get a table in 5 mins. It's not a calm fine in restaurant, as it is just too crowded. The menu has a lot to choose from. The best part is , it's not expensive. <br/><br/>We ordered , <br/>Channa daal , Fish pakora, chicken tikka makhani , vegetable samosa, chilli king prawns with Butter roti and mango chutney. <br/>The staffs are very busy and gets irritated within a second, if you take 2 mins extrain deciding your order ( especially the female staff). <br/><br/>Overall, the food was delicious. The place was amazing , proper authentic Indian restaurant.

It is worth booking a table at Mother India's, we didn't and had a bit of a wait for one, not that it was a problem, the staff showed us to a waiting area and offered drinks. <br/><br/>The food was great, and as almost every other reviewer has said it is served tapas style, meaning that you can sample a wider selection of the menu. <br/><br/>Mother India's is very reasonably priced and I would have no hesitation in visiting again or recommending to friends.
Edinburgh Feasts
Mother India started out in Glasgow but has a successful offering here in Edinburgh. This restaurant serves Indian tapas. I have been here plenty of times and sometimes I have experienced mildly chaotic service but didnât experience that today. After a poppadom each with mango chutney, we all ordered two dishes each plus breads. The menu recommends 3-4 dishes between 2 people and this really is enough. We ordered a mix of dishes including butter chicken, chilli king prawns, chilli chicken, lamb karahi and aubergine fritters (the latter two I had). The majority of us went for garlic pittas and one went for peshwari.

After reading few reviews on Zomato about the best Indian in Old Town Edinburgh. I made sure I hunt this place down and experience Indian dining everyone is applauding about. <br/>It's not that difficult to find any restaurant in Old Town everything is at a walking distance. It's near south bridge and if you are around Cowgate, it means you're close. The restaurant is not big but was buzzing with people. The main floor was full so after a pause we got seated downstairs. <br/>Even though we inaugurated downstairs for that evening. It was not like we could choose to sit where we wish.  <br/>The place was neatly jammed with chairs and table too close to each other. Ones the place started packing in, it felt like you are part of this one big family dinner as you can easily listen into each other's conversation. <br/>Mother India's cafe massively lacked in decor, it was the most minimal and muted room. <br/>Now, now nothing matters more than the food that the restaurant serves. The thing I most like was their tapas menu which I do suggest other restaurants to have as well if the have too many dishes on their menu. <br/><br/>I was carving for proper north Indian food (Butter Chicken, Dal Makhni and keema Samosa)<br/>Butter Chicken was nothing as I expected it was not creamy and flavourful. Sadly, it's on their recommended dishes. I was massively underwhelmed. Dal Makhni was little al dente (cooked so as to be still firm when bitten). Assuming it was not cooked for hours for the right consistency and creaminess. <br/>Naans were gorgeous, soft melt in your mouth and substantial quantity. <br/>As mentioned the tables were so small and all our dishes came all at once. By the time we got stuck into Keema Samosa they were cold and sad. Plus its my request to all the indian restaurants that serve samosas please make your own samosa dough and DO NOT USE filo pastry. It makes the samose oily and hard and they do not taste nice. <br/><br/>The staff was quick, more eager than attentive. It felt a bit rushed. The price was fair, can't complain there. <br/>Overall the restaurant was not worth the hike. I mean they serve decent Indian food but nothing exceptional. I felt more like home cooked food than professional prepared. <br/><br/>If your are dying for Indian food only then I recommend.

You will be surprised at what this restaurant has to offer. Don't get turned away by its small humble entrance. It has decent seating capacity as it spread out on two floors, one on the ground and the other on the basement. This is a popular stop, so it will be prudent to reserve a spot if you are planning to visit with a group of 4 or more. The service was surprisingly fast. Food was excellent. The breads were very soft. The portions are sufficient for one person, so order accordingly. Items are decently priced. We found the starters good and the mains even better. The taste is authentic Indian, but made less spicy to cater for less adventurous taste buds.

After hearing a lot about Mother India cafe by zomato community I went to this restaurant and overall experience was ok not that brilliant . No complain about food though but they really need to work on sitting arrangements. Tables are really small but they expect maximum people to cover that and chair as well is not comfortable. We ordered some 4 main course and waiter was struggling to keep all in small table. One used to eat in restaurant to sit comfortably and enjoy food.<br/>

Delicious birthday lunch this afternoon! Mother India's has such a diverse menu and every dish we tried was so unique and flavorful, the daily specials were also quite a nice touch. Love the idea of Indian Tapas and was very pleased with the portion sizes! Service was speedy, but a bit nonchalant, otherwise everything was great.

I will rate and review anything Indian.<br/>Yes maybe because a Indian out of India still craves Indian food even if he is a big foodie and even if the foodie loves to try different cuisines. An India will always need to be in touch with his mother land . <br/>And that brings us to Mother India 's Cafe . <br/>A decent fare . curries are good the breads or naans are big and filing. Though the touch with authenticity is bit off but any rajma chole or vegetable curry and any Indian snak or pakoda is always welcome by my tummy .

After our visit from London, we were visiting Edinburgh and were longing for some good Indian food. Concierge from our hotel recommended this place and we went to explore the city hoping to find this place and have good food! It is a little tricky to find the place as it is a little inside from the road where the university is situated. But we did manage to find the place. It was Wednesday but the place was almost full. We were escorted to our table immediately. The place is neatly done and is a Tapas style dining place. We ordered three dishes and all of the ordered dishes were nicely cooked. Service is a little slow, may be due to rush hours but overall it was a good experience. I would rate food at 5/5, Value for money 3.5/5 and Service at 3/5. Overall a 4/5 for the experience and good food!

This place is fabulous if you like Indian food this is the best in the city service was excellent the food was amazing what more can I say you must try it I booked again for next month to take friends.

After my first visit to Mother India I have to agree with the fact that this might be one of the best indians (if not the best) in Edinburgh. Tasty indian food tapas-style, filling, savoury and amazing... Went there with a party of 4 and we ordered 6 different dishes, along with Pitta bread and rice. By the time we left we were so full of deliciousness. Honestly, give it a try... and order their chicken tikka.
Parul Chaudhary
Best Indian food we had in UK. Ordered Saag, aloo parantha, gobhi aloo and curd and it was the yummiest food. Even on weekday it was full. We had to wait to get seats but it was all worth it. Amazing food, we were full, great walk outside to the streets, awesome hospitality, great wine Sauvignon blanc and it was open for kids too which was the most important thing since we had two of ours with us ?

I really love Indian food, I would say it is one of my favourites. I visited Mother India for Easter dinner as I am staying at The G&V hotel. The inside of the restaurant was really lovely and spacious. It was also very busy! Which I believe is always a good thing. The service was really good and we were served quickly. The food was really delicious and well seasoned. However, the portions were very small and I didn't feel very full afterwards. I would have preferred to order a main dish or more little dishes but they were quite expensive!. The bill came to ÂŁ32, which was okay. I don't think I would go back if I am honest, maybe for lunch!

Mmmmmmmm. Love the Indian tapas style food here. Superb! Great for eating in a group. Quick efficient service too.

Full of flavour, excellent Indian food.

I'm dribbling just thinking about it!. If I'm ever in this part of town, I can't resist popping in Mother India's. It's always packed, but they will always squeeze you in. There are 3 main spaces; 2 upstairs and a whole other world with its own bar downstairs. Very contemporary: they just got the loos done too and that's a whole lot nicer. Love the tapas idea: never a huge fan of dropping a whole bowl of something on your plate. The combination of flavours and quality of food means that I am rarely satiated in any other Indian restaurant now. Another Top 5 for chai tea (ask for Masala here). Great value for money. Absolutely love it.
Mike
Worth it. Instant you walk the right smell hits you. It's the real deal. A big slice of Glasgow curry quality brought to Edinburgh. Bustling for a Thursday night. All good. Menu is clean and unfussy. No nonsense curries. Men come here for curry and beer. It's that good.
Valhalla
Disappointed. Really enjoyed the food but was totally rushed through our meal and one of the waiters were pretty rude to us as I think he thought we were taking too long on ordering. Wont be back in a hurry.
Chris Follan
I loved the fact that it was tapas style. The food was amazing and great value.

Superb delicious food, staff maybe too efficient and clothes hair stink when you leave but sign of a good curry house!! Have been a number of times and would def recommend!

Excellent! Very authentic. Best Keema Mutter I've had outside India. Great value and buzzing atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Great service, fab food, good atmosphere, friendly staff, what's not to like? Unless you are dead set on tandoori or can't wait a few minutes for a table at this well deserved popular restaurant

A Trully genuine Indian with a twist. Tapas style dining let's you indulge without bloat or bulge. Minced lamb was devine as was the dosa & spinach panner. Can't wait to return.

Fantastic restaurant: tapas style great Indian food. Highly recommended

All of the dishes we consumed had a real zesty freshness to them, which hinted that they were cooked to order. They also exhibited none of the cloying oiliness that can sometimes be present in Indian takeaway fare. And whilst the portions served at Mother Indiaâs CafĂ© are purposely quite small, five or six of these shared between four people makes for a substantial meal. - See more at: http://www.scrumptiousscran.com/2013/09/review-spice-is-right-mother-indias-cafe.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ScrumptiousScran+%28Scrumptious+Scran+%29#sthash.it1cwodR.dpuf

When we left we both agreed that all the aggro at the beginning was most definitely worth it for the amazing food we had just consumed. I'm sure it was only so manic because it was the Fringe but considering it is a well established restaurant (opening in 2008) with a couple others in Glasgow I would have thought they would have had these things ironed out by now. A place to go if you're visiting Edinburgh but be wary or at least prepared for the mayhem around festival season.
Sir And Mlady Dine Out
An Indian restaurant that serves its food tapas style had an appeal to us! The mushroom bhaji was unlike any bhaji we've ever had. Most of us are used to the traditional onion bhaji - in fact I have to confess I love it.
Lunch Quest
So overall, while I enjoyed the chicken and lamb dishes, I didn't enjoy the experience of dining at Mother India.

...discovered a brilliant restaurant called âMother Indiaâs Cafeâ, which specializes in serving Indian food, tapas style. I absolutely love it.
Jadine Arnold - The Punk Rock Princess
This is by far one of the best Indian places ive eaten at in Edinburgh, having been to India several times as well, this hits the spot, the lovely staff, downstairs lit rooms with the feel of India and the portions are fantastic, fantastic Indian tapas. Staff are really nice too, always a place me and the family go when they visit!

Firstly I want to say that I actually rate this restaurant a 3.8 as opposed to a 3.5 but Zomato doesn't allow that haha ! On the actually review then - This is a great, authentic yet innovative Indian cuisine restaurant that isn't too expensive and cute for a casual dinner with friends or date night with a partner. Because it's a tapas style restaurant, you get to try a larger variety of dishes without ending up wasting too much food. They have a great selection of starters and mains (and coming from a vegetarian, that's saying a lot !). I've been here on multiple occasions and have ended up being a very happy customer on each one. One of the dishes I do recommend is their chana poori, it definitely reminded me of something my mother would make at home. It's one of the nicest Indian restaurants in Edinburgh, so if you're in the area - I would definitely recommend that you give it a try !

Indian tapas in the old town.<br/>This was my second trip to Mother India. This time there were five of us working together to choose a variety of food (tapas tactics).<br/>Balance and sharing are key points of tapas eating. It's a good way to get to know people better. The food is great and brought out when it's ready so I recommend getting dishes everyone wants to eat so no one is left hungry and waiting. All in all a great social night out.
Amanda Kennedy
Came here last Valentine's Day and this is the perfect place to go if like me you don't have a huge appetite. Nothing is worse than wasting money on a huge plateful of food you'll just never manage apart from of course the dreaded awkward moment when the waiter asks: 'Was everything ok with your food?' as they eye your suspiciously over flowing plate. And if you're like my boyfriend and just love to eat everything then you can taste it all with out over committing to one or two large and expensive portions!Really good service too but the atmosphere is rather chilled so don't do what I did and over dress as you will get a few odd looks from people who look as they've just rolled out of bed and flung a jacket over their pyjamas.

I went along for a late lunch on a Saturday, and the moment I stepped into the restaurant the smell was amazing. The menu is set out for tapas style dining, which is perfect as my boyfriend and I can never decide on just one curry. After much deliberation, we went for Lamb Saag, Butter Chicken and Chilli and Garlic Chicken. Mushroom rice, poppadoms and a piratha are our usual accompaniments so we ordered them too. <br/><br/>The food came out really quickly and we pretty much sat in silence as we devoured the food. It was SO good. The butter chicken was probably the best I've had in Edinburgh, the sauce was creamy with just the right amount of spice. I usually have lamb curries, so I was particularly keen to see how the Lamb Saag faired. It was melt-in-your-mouth good. My boyfriend's favourite was the Chilli Garlic chicken as it was in his words 'pretty hot'. Â <br/><br/>The restaurant has a really relaxed atmosphere and the staff are really helpful and attentive. Â I highly recommend you give it a go!

Great scran as usual! We were super rushed as we where going to the nearby Festival Theatre but food came swiftly and it was absolutely delicious! It's such a great idea to have smaller dishes available so that you can enjoy much more flavours - and perfect for indecisive people like me too! Reasonably priced too and staff were very attentive.

Edinburgh Restaurant Review: The spice is right â Mother Indiaâs CafĂ©<br/><br/>I suppose I am what might be termed as a âhonoraryâ Scot. Iâve lived the majority of my life north of the border, and am hitched to a âWeegieâ. My vocabulary is now littered with Scots phrases â an overcast morning isnât âdullâ, but rather âgey dreichâ. Yet listen carefully and there is sometimes still a wee hint in my voice betraying that I originally hail from the UKâs Curry Capital. Not Glasgow (obviously), nor Bradford, Manchester or Londonâs Brick Lane. For by birth, I am a Brummie.<br/><br/>I adore Asian food, and I think my growing up in a city where a substantial proportion of the population can trace its heritage to India, Pakistan and Bangladesh has much to do with this. I went to school in a part of Birmingham that was blessed with a plethora of Asian-run shops and eateries. I still have vivid memories of walking past these, taking in the sights of the (then) weird, yet wonderful-looking, fruit and vegetables displayed outside grocersâ shops and the amazing smells of cooking spices as they emanated from restaurants.<br/><br/>Last weekend, with my parents visiting from Birmingham, I was keen to show them that great Indian cooking isnât only the preserve of the city of my birth. And in Edinburgh there is no finer place to demonstrate this than Mother Indiaâs CafĂ©. Located just off âThe Bridgesâ on Infirmary Street (EH1 1LT) this has been an incredibly popular restaurant since its opening five years ago. Even at 6.30pm on a Friday the main dining area was packed, so we were shown to our table in the restaurantâs basement, which was thankfully was not dark and dingy as some subterranean eateries can be. No clichĂ©d flock wallpaper or piped sitar music to be found here though, oh no - just modern, minimalist furniture complementing the white-washed walls, which are adorned with arty photos portraying life across the Indian sub-continent.<br/><br/>Equally refreshing is the restaurantâs menu. Mother Indiaâs CafĂ© serves an Indian take on tapas â sometimes also referred to as tiffin. Their a la carte menu features a staggering 42 dishes, as well as daily specials and accompaniments such as various forms of bread and rice. Non-meat eaters are very well served, as nearly half the dishes available are either vegetarian or vegan. As recommended by the restaurant, we decided to order five or six dishes between us, accompanied by a couple of portions of naan bread and basmati rice. The very courteous waiting staff obviously know the menu inside out, as they were immediately able to suggest something suitable for my Mother, who doesnât have a particular soft spot for dishes heavy on chilli.<br/><br/>Whilst our mains were being cooked, we were served the ubiquitous poppadums accompanied by some very tasty (and I suspect home-made) pickles and chutneys, variously washed down with warm, cinnamon-infused chai and cool Kingfisher larger. Our curry âtapasâ duly arrived in short order, together with substantial naans and steaming fluffy rice. All dishes looked vibrant, being presented in their miniature balti dishes and casserole pots.<br/><br/>The lamb saag was rich, the succulent meat being bathed in an earthy, spinach-laden sauce with a hint of methi. Two of our chicken-based dishes â chilli garlic chicken, and ginger chicken and spinach leaf â superficially looked quite similar, with tender pieces of breast and thigh surrounded by a deep (but not artificial) red sauce. Tasting revealed them to be quite different, with the chilli garlic chicken having a real kick â as might be expected â and the ginger-based dish having more subtle, fruity warmth. <br/><br/>See full review at: http://www.scrumptiousscran.com/2013/09/review-spice-is-right-mother-indias-cafe.html

As I am a big fan of indian food. i went to Mother India Cafe to try my favourite Butter Chicken with pitta bread and massala tea. The customer service was good, was served immediately and the food came literally after 10minutes. The portion of butter chicken was quite small, it came with one pitta bread and a big pot of massala tea. I did not expect a big plate as i paid 5.25 for a butter chicken, 1.85 for the tea and 1.85 for the pitta bread. Overall the food was tasty and the customer service really friendly. Great value for money.
