The staff were excellent and I was encouraged to try Hake for the 1st time, as I need to be careful with fish. We both had an excellent 6 courses, with accompanying wine. Mel,m our waitress, has a great and checky humour that we enjoyed. Happily return here.
If you are looking for an intimate and tasteful, yet relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy a tasty Scottish meal, you need to go to the Cellar Door! My husband and I found this delightful restaurant serendipitously on an evening walk when the lovely Giulia (our “hostess with the mostest”❣️) guided us downstairs into a cozy little nook and and into the capable hands of fair Mel, our server for the evening. I chose the North Atlantic haddock with chips( fries to Americans) and Jim had a traditional roasted pork loin dinner. Both meals were thoroughly delicious with generous portions to satisfy hearty appetites.
Great atmosphere, yummy comfort Scottish food, reasonably priced. But what will gladly bring us back to The Cellar Door is the feeling that we have made friends in Scotland; the warm reception and care given makes you feel like you’ve come home. We’ll be back.
We had walked around for a while trying to avoid pub food or sky high prices for average food. We walked downstairs with minimal expectations for what looked (at street level) to be an empty restaurant. Downstairs was a little gem - genuine warm welcome, lovely food, good selection, acceptable prices.
I would thoroughly recommend this place and ignore the empty upstairs seating.
New chef, creative dishes that are well executed with informed attentive service. A lovely bright room with giant windows, in spite of being in a cellar! Try the Venison, the goat cheese bonbons, and the lovely chocolate dessert. Recommend Highly!
We'll be back.. They are definetely glutton-free friendly. My wife's GF blade of beef was excellent, I had the salmon over potatoes surrounded by a sauce. It was tender, sweet and luscious. They offered beer from a brewery local to Edinburgh (Stewart), which I always prefer to try something new anyway, and the two I tried we're great. The decor underground is singular, in the iron girders protruding from above and the multi-level seating area. Well done !
We ate here for our anniversary and had the chateau briand meal. It was delicious and the service was excellent.
Cellar Door is a lovely restaurant and £9.95 for two courses at lunch is a good deal, but whilst the starters were scrumptious the mains were sadly only satisfactory.
I’ll certainly be back to give the “surprise” menu a whirl. If you haven’t had the pleasure of dining there, I recommend you do so, soon
Excellent food! This was my favorite stop in Edinburgh and I feel lucky that we got to eat here. The bread was soft and the butter tasty, the tomatoes were the best and the fish I had was buttery soft! The servers were really attentive and polite. Definitely recommend and would come back.
Impeccable dining experience! The service was top notch, and we were even given a complimentary glass of Prosecco for a reservation mishap. Service was very efficient and friendly. They offer plenty of vegetarian options. The food was absolutely delicious!!
The food was lovely! We had Smoked Salmon Mousse, Ribeye Steak, Spring Green Risotto, and Toffee dessert. I saw a few reviews saying that the food was bland, but to us it was just right :)
Was very excited for the 6 course tasting menu and loved that there were drinks paired with it! Will happily come here again and I recommend it to friends too!
I booked this place for the tasting menu for our anniversary and we had a wonderful experience. Easy dish was wonderful, beautiful presentation and play of tastes and colours with seasonal food. Lorna waited our table and she was excellent in making us feel welcomed and special on our anniversary. We had a complimentary anniversary dessert which was so tasty with a lovely announcement - turned out another couple had who also chosen the place for their anniversary. :)
Highly recommend the tasting dish.
Very nice authentic Scottish restaurant. The service was perfect and the waitress was so sweet with our little baby. Even the owner stopped by our table for a wee chat. Everyone was very welcoming and the food was incredibly good!
I cannot say enough great things about this restaurant! My husband and I both ordered the tasting menu, I had the vegetarian and he the meat. Every dish was delicious, even things we were not sure we would like (looking at you haggis). And the waitress was so knowledgeable and sweet, she explained all the dishes to us and talked with us about visiting the area. We loved it and highly recommend going and trying out a bunch of different things.
Highly recommended!!
Went with some friends, one of whom is vegetarian and we all went for the tasting menu. Didn't regret it one bit.
We chose the wine pairing with the meal and it works really well. I had the non veg option and everything was so good. My absolute highlight was the venison though. Just so tasty!!
The music and playlist brought back some old memories and really made out night. The ladies provided a wonderful service and can I give a shout out to the owner Lorna who was just so wonderful and even changed a couple of things out in terms of meal options.
Would absolutely go back there and recommend it to anyone who wishes to enjoy a nice meal in Edinburgh
We tried the 6 course rastning menu and it was so good. The haggis was stunning.
The staff were so friendly and described every dish carefully.
Only - is that its very noisy so dont expert a romantic dinner.
Tried the tasting menu. One of the best food experiences for me. Everything was so delicious and the service was lovely too.
