Really cool place to hangout.a The ambience is cosy and cute, the pastries are fresh and the cappuccino was really good. All this is managed by two young girls and they are good at What they are doing.I had pea and watercress soup which was good. But all in all it's a pretty neat n cute place to hangout, talk over coffee and have some few fresh homemade pastries to end the day on a good note.
Words cannot describe my love for this little brunch spot. Three and a half years ago, my family and I visited Edinburgh for the first time and happened upon the Southern Cross Cafe for breakfast our morning. The cute decor, wonderful staff, and amazing food ensured a return visit our second morning - which we almost never do since we usually opt to try new places when we travel.
Fast forward to this year, I went back to Edinburgh with friends. I somehow tracked this place down, and it didn't disappoint. The decor was the same, the food and coffee as delicious. The staff had changed, but they were even friendlier!
Between my two friends and I, we split the Big Belter, not knowing what we were getting ourselves into. Suffice to say, we probably left a third of the plate behind despite stuffing ourselves beyond our limits!
Basically, go!! I'll be spending my mornings here any time I visit this city (:
There are certain places relatively nearby my office that I’ve been saving up for occasions when I’m a little pressed for time, or feeling particularly lazy. When the second situation arose, today, I headed for one of them, in the shape of the Southern Cross Café, on Cockburn Street.
With the promise of Artisan Roast coffee and daily changing soups, I was confident that the place would be good, so crossed their threshold with a confident stride.
The welcome was warm, and I was seated at one of their shelf seats, next to a blasting radiator, which was entirely welcome as it was rather chilly outside.
The soup today was broccoli, which sounded good to me. I added a goat’s cheese salad, to accompany it, asking for both dishes to be delivered at the same time.
The attentive waiter soon delivered both plates, with the salad looking particularly bonnie. The soup looked good, too, and while it could have used a drop less cream and a twist more salt, it was pleasingly good.
The salad was a notch better, combining beautifully thin, crisp pieces of beetroot with fresh salad leaves, topped with a lightly-toasted round of goat’s cheese. The salad could have used just a little more of the vinaigrette dressing, but again this was a relatively minor quibble with what was a very tasty dish.
I rounded things out with a very good espresso.
So overall, I was impressed with the warmth of welcome and quality of dishes on offer at the Southern Cross Café. From their compact café, they’re doing fine work, with a nice array of dishes on offer. For a quick lunchtime stop, this is a really good option.

This is a really good find, right near the Royal Mile.
There were no tables when we arrived so we ordered and sat outside to wait for people to leave.
Once inside, the cafe is super cosy. There were about 8 big homemade cakes in the window to choose from, and lots of tables.
I had the vegetarian breakfast which came with a tattie scone (sort of like a thin hash brown) and veggie haggis (which was delicious). I was really impressed.
My partner had the club sandwich and fries and said it was good.
Pretty reasonably priced considering the location, so rest assured that this isn't a tourist trap!
Went here for breakfast and it was quite good! They were able to fit 6 of us comfortably! The staff were extremely friendly and answered all questions. Food was delicious, no complaints across the board. No alcohol if you are looking for that. Overall enjoyed our experience!
This is the perfect place for brunch in Edinburgh, with tasty mains and desserts alike. On the window you will see all of the delicious cakes to tempt you to come in. For my brunch I had some salmon on toast drizzled in balsamic glaze, and then a caramel shortbread as a treat. The quality of food was top notch. My only complaint would be the waiting time which was quite long, but in the end the wait was totally worth it.
It's a good place to sit and have coffee or something small.
It's a bit of a tourist trap though. I don't mind paying those prices for coffee and cakes even though they are at a more marked-up price then other cafés, but the actual food there is pretty pricey, I have to say.
Lovely cake with a great selection and very nice juice. Bit pricey at £22 for both of us but can't fault the food. Staff all very friendly.
Ate here a couple of times over the weekend we were in Edinburgh . Firstly to have tea & cake (Apple & Almond cake was delicious as was the Earl Grey tea) and then went back for breakfast. Forgot to take pictures, but I had the Cheese & Tomato Croissant which was very tasty and hubbie had the Triple breakfast Roll (mushrooms, hash browns & sausages). He was a happy man 😁 A lovely cafe on Cockburn Street which was friendly, clean and the food we ate was delicious!
Amazing food . I ordered ham & cheese crossiant and was expecting the usual but it was baked and crossiant was flaky from out soft from inside ( just the way I like )
Carrot cake is a must have
Staff : a red hair steward was very rude & inhospitable. They need to learn to serve better . Started cleaning the table even before we left ( what hurry are you in )
Had a huge Scottish breakfast here as brunch/lunch after an early arrival to Edinburgh.
Still full 5 hours later...
Tasty bacon, nice haggis, crispy hashbrowns, eggs over easy etc, and a nice cold orange juice. Not cheap, but considering location neither in any way over priced.
Nice staff, but a bit much noice from the guests upstairs (seated right under).
I liked the vibe. The cafe has insite and on the street area which are nice. The breakfast tasted well. We ordered porridge and scotch breakfast. The price is like £15 if you also want a drink.
The Coffee tasted very good and the blueberry pancakes were very nice too.
We liked the atmosphere. Price was good for the location.
