We went here for some drinks in the evening. They had a good selections of cocktails and the staff were very helpful and offered to make other things if we had wished. The place has a great atmosphere and nicely busy with seats available.
One of my favourite bars of all time! I work just across from Hemma and it's a favourite amongst staff to go there for an after work drink. The staff are all really friendly, the atmosphere is pretty cool and it's always buzzing with people. The
furniture looks quite retro/vintage with wooden chairs, wooden tables and sofas. The drinks aren't typical bar drinks which is what's so great about Hemma - they have different Swedish cider's and Blue Moon on tap (my favourite). I definitely recommend this place to anyone - it's great for families with a kids play area upstairs, great for couples to go for dinner and great for groups of friends to hang out.
A great big glass edifice far from the main drag doesn't seem a likely spot for the latest offering from the Boda family of very Leith-based pubs, but Hemma (Swedish for 'home') really works it. And being a large modern space it manages to escape the biggest flaw its siblings suffer, being too small; this place is huge.
If you've been to any of the others - Boda, Sofi's Bar, Victoria and Joseph Pearce's - then you know what to expect. A hint of kitch, never enough to be intrusive, with almost too-cool staff serving better than average selection of tipples. Hemma also has a wide range of food on offer, a similar menu to that in Joseph Pearce's, with a Swedish twist on normal bar food. Slightly low in gluten free options, but one won't starve.
The setting is cozy, a bland development with just enough personalisation to make it friendly. Being all glass there are often interesting views, whether it's the back of Arthurs Seat, Parliament staff heading for lunch or drunken Friday night visitors to the Pizza Express next door. The bar is on two levels; the upstairs, bookable for events or private parties, has provided me with many evenings of great entertainment.
The only problem for me that prevents it from becoming a regular haunt is that, despite being very close to many things, its location makes it feel out of the way and so I never think of going there spontaneously. When I do I'm always glad I did.
Hemma bridges the gaps between über-modern and traditional, Swedish and Scotish, pub and restaurant. I love their convenient Holyrood Road location and the fact that, although they're in Old Town and just off the Royal Mile, they enjoy a modern building filled with natural light due to their floor-to-ceiling windows.
Hemma is one of a group of several Swedish bars in Edinburgh that each have their own feel, yet many of them have mis-matched, old, tatty furniture. Hemma is a pub which serves good food and yet is far from being an 'old man pub'. The decor is fun and quirky and the furniture, whilst not always very comfortable, is endearing and makes Hemma feel like a relaxed, fun place. It's not so relaxed on its prices, though, and although I enjoy the ambiance and the international beers, I think they are overpriced.
One of the things I like best about Hemma is its great outdoor area with outside tables that are set back from the road. They are fantastic for soaking in the summer sun whilst enjoying a pint!
Hemma's is a really cute cafe behind the new Scottish Parliament and opposte the Citibank headquarters.
They serve a very interesting cuisine - Swedish and its quite tasty.
To start out we just had some coffees to get over our exhaustion. I enjoyed my latte, husband wasn't too pleased with his cappucino. They were also very obliging when I told them that I would prefer just half a serving of Grilled Chicken Thighs and every component of the dish was excellent.

Hemma was great - lovely atmosphere as well as selection. They had lots of choices for vegans, vegetarians and gluten free folk, as well as many different adult beverages and coffee drinks to choose from. Really had a family vibe - lots of people were there with their small children when we were eating! Overall a great experience.
A good place for a spot of fika in Edinburgh, near the Scottish Parliament and Holyrood.
This was exactly what we needed for a quick bite to eat and a sit down. We shared a croque monsieur, to which you can add a soup for an extra couple of pounds. This was just what we needed and the iced coffee was a great pick-me-up for the evening ahead. The atmosphere was calm and relaxed, and the service friendly and attentive.
Really good. Many options for different diets even. Healthy food mainly!!
Staff seemed nice overall... I think that day was particularly busy and service was..Ok. But the food makes you forgett that.
Nice light open cafe/bar. The food is lovely and reasonably priced however be warned the chilli sauce in the sausage rolls have a bit of a kick to them. Bar prices are fair with a bottle of wine being £20. Very vegetarian and vegan friendly with alcohol marked as well as food!
Comfortable, cozy and eclectic. Great staff and fantastic coffee and brunch. Abundant seating for parties of 2 up to 10+. Walkable from the Royal Mile or anywhere in the Old Town. Highly recommend and would go again!

The place is big enough for small groups. The food and the people are lovely and the service was excellent.
Amazing price for what you get! I got the Hemma breakfast and mocha. Delicious food but.. don’t mess with baked beans! The beans were nice but won’t top Heinz!
Really chilled atmosphere and the food was very good. We were there with friends and my toddler son. There are a few toys downstairs by the front door but not as many as they used to have. Even so because of the nice atmosphere and the layout upstairs meaning we weren't squashed next to another table he played happily. They provided plastic cutlery for him and a good children's menu. We ordered from the brunch menu and enjoyed our meals.
Big portions!!! Food tasted really good
This is a good spot to grab some food. The salads are quite big and the burgers are good. The selection of vegetarian choices is really nice and the have nice drinks. The staff are a little absent minded but so friendly it is easy to forgive.
Will go back.
Service: 5/5 - friendly, attentiveness, accommodation perfect. Ambiance: 5/5 - wide open, baby friendly (but no baby change), interesting and relaxed. Food: 4/5: Value for money and taste. Drinks: 5/5 - good recommendations, cocktails and pricing. Lovely easy place to have a meal and a chat!
A place with a nice atmosphere and broad range of drinks on offer especially a broad selection of gins. The food is decent if you are after a quick bite but there are better alternatives nearby. The staff were friendly and attentive despite how busy it was.
Staff are excellent. They are very focused on helping you with anything you need. Relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
There's an upstairs bar you can book for private events and an outdoor area as well.
In the fridges you'll find lots of local craft beer including Barney's Beer and Tempest Brewery.
The menu seemed quite limited but I have to say the food was good, fresh and tasty. More importantly it wasn't too busy for a Saturday night, we got a comfy sofa and there wasn't any loud, unwelcome music playing. Perfect for the more mature person's Saturday evening out.
Nice atmosphere and lovely staff.
Went for a Christmas set menu... Compared to previous visits (where the food has been top notch) I think it was just OK on this occasion. A lot of desserts went uneaten, which is almost unheard of with this group, but feedback was they were a bit tasteless. I would say this has not been an issue the other times I've been when the food has been very tasty indeed (which was why we picked here for our Christmas night out).
The only other issue is that this is the second time we've been charged more than the advertised price for cocktails (which are expensive enough). They were nice tho!
Very kid friendly, there's a box of toys in the corner you can borrow from and there's high chairs available. Food is decent, and they have a good selection of beers on tap. Some space outside for older kids to run around too.
