Popped in here for a drink whilst waiting for a table in a nearby restaurant. Nice little bar, plenty going on with the decoration. Service was friendly, we didn't eat here to can't comment on the food!
Located in West End, Au Bar is a cosy sports bar.
It had the standard menu for breakfast, starters, grills and burgers. We decided to try the BBQ Chicken Burger and it was delicious. It has sliced chicken soaked in BBQ sauce served with fat fries and chilli sauce.
The atmosphere is very laid back and relaxed making it ideal for game nights and dinner.
The service is fair and the prices are affordable.
I've been to Au Bar couple of times. One time there was a pub quiz happening at the back of the restaurant, another time there was a football match on the screens and I also popped in during the day for a coffee when it was quite quiet. Overall, a nice cosy pub. They do pub food as well but I haven't eaten there. Friendly stuff and they have some outside tables for when the weather is good.
The Spartacan Pub Review
+3.5
A truly intriguing little spot, at first glance a prettily adorned pub but upon further inspection a French twist on the Edinburgh street-corner alehouse. The wrought iron framing around the bar and the art nouveau stylings of the external doors should've been a giveaway, but it does take a moment to realise there's something more interesting on show here.
They don't sacrifice anything by way of drink selection - whiskies abound, and the hidden gem on tap is the potent Thistly Cross Original, which unlike its Traditional counterpart hits you with apple juice sweetness and 7.2% ABV. It's the most merry intoxication I've experienced, time and time again.
For all the good taste and care that has gone into interior design and drink choice, it can sometimes lack a little in atmosphere. But if you're with a crowd capable of overcoming that themselves, I'd fancy that there are few pubs to match it on the west side of town, and the Thistly Cross alone behoves the pilgrimage.
I mostly go here because the staff is spot on. Quick with smiles - any pint just tastes better that way!! Also last I was in, Estrella (Barcelona beer) was on tap! Can be a great place between work and home!
Great food, great beer, great service. What's not to like?
Great place for food, beer or just a coffee. Friendly service. Place to sit out back.
Our favourite place to eat and drink in Edimburgh.
Gammon is amazing
Wandered in to get out of the rain and the owner (Tanya) made us feel VERY welcome. Nice atmosphere and as we had just arrived and not eaten, we ordered sandwiches and they were very tasty and very filling so glad we didn’t order any chips to share. Will definitely be our local whilst on our long weekend in this beautiful city
Slightly run down decor but has a certain charm, especially the 'mini booth' seating, perfect for couples. Small yard out the back to sit. (UPDATE - September 2019 - I'm disappointed that the Au Bar now seems to have SHUT DOWN! It's a shame as it was one of my favourite pubs in the West End. Expect it will reopen as a restaurant...nobody seems to want pubs anymore!)
We visited 2 times during our stay in Edinburgh because this bar located nearby our hotel. They have nice selection of beer and whisky, friendly staffs, cozy atmosphere. They also have good foods.
Quiet and peaceful on a Sunday afternoon. Lamb special was a great Sunday dinner, a good portion of meat, so could've done with a bit more veg! But no complaints. Quick and friendly service.
While somewhat pricey for a pint the atmosphere in Au bar is worth it, it's generally quiet after work and is a lovely bar to settle down at after a long day to have a quick pint and catch up with work friends or even just to relax and watch sports. Decor inside is lovely and the seats are extremely comfortable.
Stopped in briefly for pre dinner drinks. Quiet at 5pm, but starting to get busier by the time we left. Lovely traditional cosy interior with comfortable seating. Good selection of drinks available, I had a decent pint of Belhaven best bitter and left in fine mood for dinner. Didn't eat, but food is available.
Was in here a couple of years ago for food and wasn't too impressed. Noticed they had a new sign outside and thought I'd try again and I am so glad I did. My first visit back I had the Double Burger with Cheese and Bacon and it was crazy good. I've been back half a dozen times over the last two months since then and I don't even live in Edinburgh, I live in Glasgow. I'm through every other week though and every time I am I go to Au Bar and try something else. I haven't been disappointed yet and look forward to completing the menu so's I can start it all over again. I highly recommend the absolutely enormous Fish n Chips (you get two unnecessarily huge pieces of fish) and the equally massive Chicken Club sandwich. My mouth's watering right now just thinking about all the amazing food I've eaten in there recently, it's out of order how good the place is.
The refurb is fantastic and the staff as well as the owners are as friendly as can wish for. Great bar right in town but like a nice bubble away from the craziness of town. My regular, even better I work just 5 minyrw minutes from there so always handy as well if a stressful day. Heavily reccommend
Great wee unique bar with character. Decent drinks, good food and when they have the time staff will wander and take drinks orders at your table. Also has a outside area which is great during summer months!
This is a nice bar but I can't help but feel a round here is more expensive than other bars in the area. They somewhat make up for that by sometimes offering free snacks (at least on a Friday for the post-work, end-of-week crowd) although I'm not 100% sure if they still do this as I didn't spot it when I was last in a week or so back.
It's recently had a bit of a refit although not all that much has changed if I'm honest. And despite it's name, this is the least convincingly French themed pub I've ever been in! - essentially a few posters and that's about it!!
Excellent atmosphere. Great quality food. Nice regular customers. Nice local beer. Nice prices. Highly recommend to any visitors in Edinburgh.
Great choice of beers. Excellent staff who really look after you at table. Good menu for food. Great place for reserving tables to watch important sports events on TV.
Best bar with best haggis and best bar men. Updated - Thats why we are going there so often :D. + You have very nice staff especially that portugal guy. I am sure if i will go alone there i will still enjoy my time there.
Went there last night and asked for one of their real ales. The very friendly European barmaid said that it was off and suggested something more tasty. Good advice. As others have said it's a good bar
