Prince Gastronome
+4.5
Prince Gastronome. I’m going to go on a limb and guess that red neon bulbs probably weren’t around in 1818. That’s not saying I wasn’t excited about visiting, but I had doubts about many of its claims. Its full name is The World Famous Frankenstein 1818. World famous? I know the novel, The Modern Prometheus, which for me is a more ominous title than just Frankenstein, but world famous? Is the novel world famous or is it the pub, because I’m pretty sure I can ask ten random people in my home town and they wouldn’t know anything about it. Can you just call yourself world famous? And its title, “The World Famous Frankenstein 1818”, was the pub was founded in 1818? That’s somewhat hard to believe considering the novel was published in 1818. And that really is its full name, The World Famous Frankenstein 1818. That’s a mouthful, so I’m just going to call it Frank from here on.

When I entered, instead of some dated dungeon-like pub replacing walnut wood panels with roughly interconnected cobblestones, I found that Frank had red faux leather chairs, iron girders, and...what do you know, walnut wood panels. This is not to say that I was disappointed with Frank. As pubs go, it’s breathtaking, except it feels more like a night club than a place people would gather to eat. Frank is very dark, almost shadowing the details of an establishment which probably cost millions to construct. It blends old-fashioned and décor with modern accents though I felt the latter overshadowed its attempts to be dated.

I can’t hate Frank...I can’t. It looks too good; I just wished it looked...well...older. As it is now, it’s more of a tribute to the films than the novel, a snapshot of some fantasy we wanted the world to look like in 1818, not as it actually was. Frank is a collage of movie sets slammed together into a pub. Not bad, just not what I expected. It’s part steampunk, part gothic, part modern nightclub. I would even go so far as to say that your opinion on the décor can radically change depending on which angle you’re looking at.

As for the food, we opened with a shared plate of nachos, towering taller than the red cuillins. This would be enough as a meal for two, but we were foolish and had already ordered mains. I had the Franken-furter (oh I saw what you did there) while my girlfriend enjoyed the haggis, neeps, and tatties. These are huge plates of food for surprisingly reasonable prices. One would expect huge markups given the location, but no. I keep getting reminded that most pubs don’t offer good food, but so far, this has not been my experience.

If you ignore the borderline menacing décor, is Frank a worthwhile location? I would say so, but I would also say that its intimidating nature may frighten away people looking for something a bit more mundane. Don’t get me wrong, Frank must rock during Halloween, and I would rather return here than to The World’s End for the simple fact that I can stretch out my arms in Frank without taking out an eye of someone at another table. But it’s also obvious that Frank is not meant for anyone older than 40. It’s not where men in tweed jackets gather around for a pint after a long day’s work. It’s for students after exams are over, and they become possessed with an overwhelming desire to get so inebriated, their gait and mannerisms would make the famous monster articulate and agile. The truth is that I would not be caught dead in Frankenstein after 10:00 pm given the obvious demographics that would congregate within it...but until then, I would definitely love to book it for my next birthday.

Great food, bad service. We waited ages just to see a menu. Fortunately the food was great. The macaroni cheese was to die for. The burgers and fries were very good as well. Frankenstein comes out of the ceiling and it's quite amusing. Wednesdays are Rocky Horror night and the staff dance on the bar.

'Frankies!' this is the perfect venue for a full evenings entertainment... It's not just about the menu which has something for everyone. It's all about the experience; theatre, atmosphere, and energy! Whatever your night - stag - hen - or just the a good drink, this place is a must!

We weren't really planned on this one but decided to stop by since we were wanting to have a quick bite somewhere. We used the conveniences in the basement (which were rather secluded and scary) before ordering. Once inside, we cosied ourselves before a fire place and ordered fajitas. The food was a little too oily but tasted good . The Frankenstein film was running on a big projector, adding to the feel and ambience of the place.

Such a surprising find! We stumbled across this place and fell in love. The most awesome themeing I've seen, all perfectly executed as a love-letter to the classic Universal Frankenstein. The little "show" was unexpected and so cool! The drinks were great, with The Goblet of Fireball being incredible. Food was simple, basic, but very tasty. So glad we found this!

Fantastic spot for horror lovers. The Gothic decor and eerie atmosphere create a captivating experience. The drinks and food selection are enjoyable, but it can get busy. Don't miss the thrilling "Frankenstein waking up" show at 11 pm! It was super cool! However, the only downside was that the staff were not really friendly, which slightly affected the overall experience.

Came here with the kids halfway through our day trip to Edinburgh. One of us has a milk allergy so we were immediately attracted in with the vegan pizza which was absolutely delicious. It didn't matter that it was the only option as it was just a lunch stop for us. 5 of us shared 2 large pizzas and a side of chips and it was ample. Our young teens loved the themed decor and were mesmerized by the monster lightening show

Absolutely fantastic pub, so quirky and the decor is superb! Such a lovely atmosphere with great staff. The best part for me was the monster when you catch him waking from his slumber. I managed to catch this on at least four occasions and it was so mesmerising to watch every time. I wish this was my local, I can't wait to visit Edinburgh again and pay another visit 🥰

Great atmosphere, and of course, based on the classic Frankenstein movies, which stared Boris Karloff as the monster. I've been so many times, although not been in here in ages, so I got surprised that there is a screen stage of the Frankenstein that comes alive and sees photos!! Great for drinks, food, and during the Edinburgh Fringe free & some have to pay events. See Edinburgh Fringe Festival or phone Frankensteins direct what's on! (Throughout August) also now selling t shirts.

Hands down our favorite pub especially for my wife. This is a popular place so get here early if you want seating. We were in a booth on the main floor. There is also seating on the floor above. Place from outside looks similar to a castle and the interior is made to look like Frankensteins laboratory right down to the body on a gurney being raised up to receive his dose of lightning. Also showing the original movie on screen. We loved this stuff. We each had a beer, 2 martinis and a shot. Best drinks. Also ordered a pizza which wasn't that great. The bartenders were great. Would definitely be back here. Highly recommend

A friend made reservations for a table upstairs. There was a show going on downstairs and they were able to move out reservation. Incredible performance!

Good pub with Brief Frankenstein animatronic show every hour. Drinks typical Edinburgh City centre prices. A range of 12 inch pizza and loaded fries available to with a few sides and cheesecake pudding. Tried loaded fries with Nduja and mozzarella which were nice as a snack. Family tried blue and red monster cocktails. Blue was very sweet but my daughter enjoyed. The Frankenstein show is quirky and gets tourists in during the day. Only lasts a few minutes but is quirky. Range of merch available behind the bar. There are bars on 3 floors but only one open during the day. Worth a visit if you are visiting Edinburgh for the day and want a pub that's a bit quirky
