The SSC is my favourite haven in Edinburgh. The staff are all wonderful, friendly, and helpful, and the food in the cafe is excellent. They put on a great range of programmes with a wide interpretation of the genre of storytelling, from more traditional forms to spoken word poetry to comedy to dance.
If you want to buy authentic Scottish tartan wear this the place to be plus situated close to Edinburgh castle is a must to visit place
Right in the heart of Edinburgh and well worth a visit. Very interesting and informative. Also very good for something to eat or drink while your listing to some of the stories being told
Wonderful venue and great programming. Convenient location with a cafe and gift shop. I have seen several shows here and all were entertaining, thought provoking and relevant. Highly recommended.
It is a great venue for events. Friendly staff and an excellent cafe on the premises. I loved the downstairs theatre.
My favourite place to perform. A lovely theatre space and wonderful staff.
Didnt realise what a lovely venue this is, hidden under John Knox's house on the Royal Mile. Modern inside with a lovely cafe and gift shop. Was there yesterday to do a course which was interesting and informative. Looking forward to going to another course soon. Highly recommend anyone with an interest in learning about becoming a storyteller or who have children who are interested should look online at the classes they offer. A special thanks to Tim Porteous and Lea Taylor who led the course. Passionate about what they do and who are keen to pass the love of storytelling to the next generation.
I really enjoyed my first experience yesterday hopefully one of many . I like to see new and vibrant performances that inspire you . Such a varied programme.
Black pudding and egg roll superb
A must see in Edinburgh!
Don't miss if you go there on travelling. Take a moment to enter.
The Scottish Storytelling Centre is Absolutely wonderful!

For his 9th birthday my son wanted to see the fringe show Is This A Dagger? on his birthday. Unfortunately the show was sold out - very disappointed wee boy. We bought tickets online and came back the next day. We both loved the show, and my son was thrilled to meet Andy Cannon, who acted in the show, afterwards. This was suggested by the gent (didn't catch his name, but he was a 🌟) who was working front of house the previous day when he heard what had happened with missing the show. When he saw us today, he asked if we wanted to talk to Andy after the show, and showed us where to wait. That is top class customer relations and made our visit to this lovely venue one that will live long in the memory. Thank you very much for making a little boys day 👍
THE STORY CAFÉ can be found at the Scottish Storytelling Centre on the Royal Mile, Edinburgh and has its own unique story to tell. The café has been under the ownership of the Edinburgh-based charity Comas since 2016 and sees all profits go to help support, among others, adults recovering from addiction and vulnerable people who have been driven into poverty.
I’ve visited the Storytelling Centre on the Royal Mile a few times and eaten in the cafe too, but it was only until Sinead contacted me recently and asked me to pop in for lunch that I found out that the cafe is under new management and that it is all about a very good social cause.
The cafe itself has a really super relaxed, open and welcoming feel about it. It’s a very tranquil space and you can feel right at home instantly.
It’s a family friendly space with lots of buggy space and a great story telling court to allow children to run about whilst mum and dad sit in the cafe area. Sitting here over lunch, there are a few business meetings happening, a few tourists visiting and some elderly people that look like they’ve visited a fair few times. I like it here.
The cafe is run by local charity Comas where 100% of the profits are gifted back to Comas to continue their important community work helping people in recovery and those facing poverty. According to their website (as I can’t say it better) ‘Comas is a community development charity which was founded in 2008. The charity works with people experiencing poverty, drug & alcohol addiction, physical and mental ill health, violence and abuse and aims to develop new ideas and approaches to meeting their needs. Comas believes in empowering people through learning and development, enabling people to work together to develop their own solutions to the challenges they face.’ The Story Cafe also has a community cafe further down the Royal Mile, called Serenity Cafe.
What I do love the most is that they are using their location on the Royal Mile to their advantage by placing themselves as a Social Tourist Destination. What this means is, that they attract a high footfall of tourists or visitors to Edinburgh that agree with their ethos and want to help.
So how do we all make a contribution without necessarily thinking about it? It’s easy. The more you eat and drink here, the more they can help people in need! Simple.
And now onto the food and drink.
I started off with a Tumeric latte. Yes, you read correct. Tumeric is meant to be the next big superfood with tons of health benefits and if you had the cold, this is the next best thing to a hot toddy. It tastes of warming ginger and tumeric and quite creamy. I enjoyed this and will definitely become a winter favourite.
The menu is small but filled with good wholesome, homemade food. Bacon rolls, porridge, and omelettes are available on the breakfast menu whilst you’ll find sandwiches and stovies along with the specials available for lunch. That day the Specials board listed soup as Curried Parsnip served with bread and butter, Lemon Chicken Cashew Curry with rice and coriander chutney and homemade scones and traybakes and cakes! The plates that came out of the kitchen all looked amazing.
I opted for the Avocado Toast with seeds. Large thick brown slice of toast covered in lettuce and avocado with a gorgeous side salad. A perfect healthy lunch.
I also had a full fat chocolate brownie, but I never managed a photo of it! Oops
Honestly, this is the nicest cafe on the Royal Mile. The staff are always so helpful and friendly. And maybe this is just me, but bring in the storytelling centre just always feels so wholesome and welcoming.
Delicious tasting coffee and on too of that one of the most beautiful presentations of coffee I have seen in a very long time. This place is a hidden Jem. And well worth a visit
Went for a light lunch with my friend and we love the food! And smoothie! One of the best I have ever had (apart of those I make at home). Good food for a good price with a nice ambience and staff. Will definitely be back and will recommend to friends!!!.
Awesome location and friendly people, with good food and very reasonable prices. I love this place.
Amazing Haggis (with whisky sauce of course) for a reasonable price (£8.50, sauce - £1.20). Our tour guide told us about this place and we will definitely be back
The Story Cafe is a fabulous social enterprise supporting people in recovery.
The menu features wholesome, imaginative items with ever changing dish of the day.
There is a wide selection of drinks including craft beer.
Look out for special events such as their fabulous Christmas lunch.
The cafe is family friendly and welcoming to all.
The Storytelling Cafe serves some of the best fresh bakery anywhere in Edinburgh, let along on the Royal Mile. Sit in the window with your cuppa and watch the world walk by.
Very polite staff and decent latte ❤️ Perfect place before going in to the theatre.
the best chocolate brownies I have ever had. Coffee good and the staff efficient and very friendly.
