I can't start to tell you how happy I was we found this gem! The rooms were amazing!!! Spotless, comfy, luxurious, beautiful and stylish. The Shower and bathroom were gorgeous. Spotlessly clean and the complimentary toiletries were biodegradable and lovely. Showing wonderful thought had been given to even this small thing. The bed and bedding were so comfy, feather and memory foam and big enough to fit a small family. The complimentary fudge, port, great coffee and tea were a fantastic touch. The staff were just lovely and attentive without being in your face with good chat and humour. The food was fantastic and the walled beer garden with heaters was perfectly perfect for a sunny May evening. The graff on the various garden ornaments was such a great touch to add a bit of edge. The Drinks selection available at the bar were spot on and the bar decor and feel were class. Negatives which were not even relevant, there is no parking but it's literally 100 yards away and cost me £1.50! And breakfast was a little slow but we needed to leave at a certain time so seemed more relevant. If you're in no rush then it's no problem.
Room 8 is AMAZING!
And the wiltshire ham and poached egg muffin with Hollandaise sauce for breakfast is out of this word. Amazing coffee too!!!!

I can echo all of the great comments already made, we had 2 rooms booked yesterday as a stop over on our way to Cornwall, couldn't of asked for more, from check-in to check-out, all staff were amazingly helpful, nothing was too much trouble, helped us with luggage/pram etc, dinner reservations, room requests, food requirements. Rooms were perfect from decor to facilities, nice little touches all complimentary including, port & fudge, water, Nespresso machine, quality teas, and bathroom products, decent shower. Food at dinner and breakfast was lovely, great choice at decent prices, with again all staff accommodating and attentive. All in all we had a lovely stay and were pleasantly surprised at the level of customer service. A big thankyou to all involved, after a 5 hour drive it was much appreciated and got our holiday off to a great start.

The breakfast at the city gate was delicious, different & definitely to be tried again. I loved the little twists of the full English breakfast, but with a potato cake (bubble & squeak), selection of jams, honey & marmite & nothing was too much trouble. We will be back for more lovely food.
Fantastic drink and a great bang for your buck menu, serving the freshest and best food you could hope for in this stunning city location! The new head chef has raised the bar to a whole new level off greatness. Will be stopping for breakfast again
We’ve had a lovely stay at the hotel, the staff was very friendly and made us feel welcome. The room was lovely, stylish but still cosy. Would’ve wanted to stay longer if we hadn’t have booked return tickets already! Breakfast was delicious as well. All in all one of the loveliest places/accommodations/ we’ve been to yet. Could recommend to anyone!
This was our second time at the City Gate for a Sunday roast. We were quickly sat down at a lovely table in the conservatory, and quickly served drinks and provided with menus. The service was great and the Sunday roast itself was made with love and absolutely delicious. We have tried many of Exeter's Sundays roasts, and this is by far the best in the city. Highly recommend!
Superb in every way. Room, food, staff, dining / bar area, beer garden, location, etc etc, amazing! A stunning refurb has taken place here, so it's a definite must if you want to eat or stay in this beautiful city.

Just come back from a night here! Really lovely place. Unique rooms with everything you need, comfy beds. Very friendly staff. Ideal location. Just wish we’d had 2 nights !
Have had many great meals here. Food is always tasty, as is the beer. Waiters are attentive, but not overbearing and the atmosphere is incredibly pleasant. They also have a great children’s menu and not too expensive.
Fabulous menu , something for everyone and the service second to none . Even better, we only live around the corner!!
Visited City Gate Exeter. Loved setting, atmosphere and lovely food. Was very well looked after by Kate ! Will definitely recommend and return !!
Beautiful food - generous portions and taste wonderful. The garden is looking lovely at the time of year and our team enjoyed the 3 courses.

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights over the Spring bank holiday weekend. Room was very nicely decorated. The bed was a very large king size. Very comfortable and nice linen bedding. We slept well every night. Good shower. TV had all the sports channels, which was a great bonus. Nice bathroom with good shower and big fluffy towels. The air con was a bit hit and miss but the excellent staff did all they could to make us comfortable.
The breakfast was superb with lots of choice. I had the full English every day. The poached egg done to perfection as was the bacon. All items on the plate were good quality. Service was superb.
We also had food on a couple of evenings and everything we ate was superb.
Every member of staff we encountered were friendly and efficient. They all seemed very happy to be providing an excellent service and seeing the customers appreciating their great service.
The excellent service and wonderful quality of food and accommodation made our weekend
We won't be staying anywhere else when we return to Exeter.

Enjoyable date night here - great service, food and wine. Dessert cocktails were great too. Quiet despite being near the city centre - but it was a Monday night!
Me and my newly wedded wife held our wedding reception here a few weeks ago, and everything was just perfect!!
We visited initially a year ago, checking out various venues to hold our reception here, and everything fit the bill (seperate area for afternoon dining, private downstairs cellar bar for the evening). Throughout the next year, Jon the events manager helped us plan and organise everything and make our ideas a reality.
Fast forward to the big day, and it all went perfectly! The food was outstanding, the staff were all wonderful, and all of our guests had a fabulous time. Jon truly went above and beyond to make our day run as smoothly as possible.
If you are looking for a venue to hold your wedding reception, look no further. You won't be disappointed.
Great atmosphere in this pub. When we went yesterday we were lucky as they had live music which was really mellow and enjoyable. They also had a real fire. The drinks may be a bit pricey but overall I enjoyed it a lot. The service is also good, staff are helpful and friendly. There is also disabled access via the entrance round the back garden.
We went as a group of 10. The staff were amazing. I had originally booked a table inside and then as the sun was shining they called me to check if I would prefer to be outside. The garden is beautiful. The food was delicious, great portions and everyone loved what they had. I can’t fault a thing and can’t wait to go back.
A super cute pub/restaurant/hotel that you should definitely check out!! Their garden is quaint and lovely to eat in in the summer. The nacoise salad was really refreshing (and vegan!) and the garlic dip that came with the triple cooked chips was so so good. Exactly what we wanted!!
Attended a work event organised by Jon, the event organiser, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. The location of the cellar bar is perfect for a private event and the staff were so incredible and kind. Food was delicious! City Gate in general is a lovely location with great quality food & drinks, and lovely staff!
The venue is absolutely stunning with staff going above and beyond.
Special shout out to Jon who helped me plan and coordinate the surprise and contacted me in moods that helped keep it a secret.
Will definitely go back.
Jon and the team kindly looked after all 60 of us last Saturday. The back room was generous and had sufficient space for us all to enjoy a seated dinner. The food was good, service excellent and we were thankful to have found such a hospitable venue in the city centre.
