I am very particular about my fish and chips, I should be, I'm from Yorkshire, where I believe we make the finest Fish and chips to be found on earth. However, today I paid my 4th visit to Findhorn, a delightful and dreamy Scottish village by the sea, where me and my partner paid our first visit to the Crown & Anchor where we ordered their Haddock and Chips. While waiting I logged on to their free WiFi to check out the news and cricket results. After 10 minutes or so the waitress brought our plates laden heavy with what looked like 2 battered crispy whales supported by an army of golden logs, that were of course the obligatory chips. At first sight I could not help but be impressed, but the proof of any pudding is in its eating. Cutting into the batter, it gave way with a satisfying crunch, which then led to the white pure flesh that was perfectly moist and cooked, just as I like it! It was not dry, but then again not too soft or wet, in fact it was cooked as a good fish should be, a balance of crispness with a slightly firm bite. Along with brown bread and butter and garden peas with a side salad, a huge wedge of fresh lemon, I have to say that the whole meal was truly great!
I forgot to mention one thing here and that is 'vinegar'. We Yorkshire-men do not put any old chemical on our fish and chips, sad to say that this is what many Fish & Chip shops use nowadays, a bulk bought chemical that masquerades as 'vinegar'. It is tasteless, no true art in the brewing, and sheer watery dribble! I hate the stuff! How sad that a great plate of fish and chips should be let down and ruined by a poor quality vinegar. But NOT so at the Crown & Anchor! Because they have the true art down pat! they use my favourite, "Sarsons" a malt vinegar that compliments the very art of good fish&chips, how this one excellent ingredient makes for that extra flavour that you just can't do without. Well done Crown&Anchor! I am looking forward to round 2 in eating your great Fish and chips again, we both could not stop smiling at food this good.
Lovely friendly welcome! Big portions of extremely tasty food! Even forgot food for the dogs and bought a kids portion of chicken nuggets which were home made! All in all, will definitely be back again and wouldn't hesitate to recommend!
What a Gin selection. Menu was terrific and our choices excellent onthe plate. Mine Host had an answer for all our questions so will rate similarly on T.Advisor ...
