Suggitts is probably the most popular place within Great Ayton. It consists of a small sweet shop and a cafe based around a kind of 50's/60's design. The sweet shop is one of the more old fashioned ones with large jars of sweets on display where you ask for the a quarter of them etc. There's also a more moden selection of sweets just on the counter in front of you. The main attraction however of Suggitts really though has to be the icecream. On a hot day, the queue is literally out the door heaving with cyclists and young families queuing for 99's and ice cream wafers.
The cafe part is small and usually very busy. There's a selection of hot drinks and scones on offer as well as some other small cafe bits.
I would recommend this to anyone, I have cycled up many a time stopping for a rewarding ice cream on the way home. It's ideal for cyclists, families, young couples and old couples. And if you head just over the road and over the river, there's a walk you can do while you happily munch away on your ice cream. Beware parking is free but Great Ayton is a disc zone in parts. Just be prepared to withstand the queues for this hugely popular shop and you'll get what you waited for.
As you walk into Suggitts you will feel you are stuck in a time Warp This is a lovely little Retro 60's style coffee bar on one side with a well stocked old fashion sweet shop on the other, filled with bottles of the sweets that you will remember from your childhood days. From cola bottles to pear drops, to special combinations of chocolate all waiting to be weighed out.
The locally made ice cream is so lovely and you can have cones with 99's and lovely chocolate wafers.Be ready to queue outside during summer months as many people come to the little village of Great Ayton, with its flowing small stream especially to have an Ice cream. They then sit over the road to look at the River Leven and perhaps watch young children feeding the ducks.
Suggitts is frequented by lots of cyclists who stop for refreshments on route.
During busy times the owner of Suggitts who lives over the road opens his field for extra parking spaces.
the ever popular suggitts in great ayton right opposite the tranquil stream , the one thing you must do is have a legendary ice-cream which are absolutely gorgeous very small cafe inside as well, sometimes on a summers day you can wait 20-30 minutes to be served that shows how popular suggitts is
Lovely ice cream, reasonably priced.
Good selection of pick and mix, however nearly everything is priced individually and not by the 100g like nearly everywhere else I've been. As a result the individual items can be particularly expensive. Two medium ice creams, and the sweets pictured came to £4.33.
Worth going for the ice cream and a walk opposite the road along side the river/small waterfall.
Don't walk too close. The place is like a magnet. You get drawn in for yet another ice cream you shouldn"t really be having but can't resist. I love the place.

Lots of choice of sweets within this popular little shop, very colourful interior with the counter display proffering multiple delights. But I went in to sample the renowned ice cream and yes, it was tasty. I had a medium 99 which cost £1.70, glad I didn't have a small one!
It's brilliant that Suggitts is still totally unchanged, after all these years.
I used to come here as a kid and I usually call in for a 99 whenever I'm in Great Ayton.
Lovely traditional sweet shop and cafe which takes me back to childhood days whenever I visit. A couple of quarters of 'bullets' and a warm glow in my heart.
Lovely little place.we only had ice cream but was lovely. We call when passing.
Best ice cream in the area and great value cafe. A local institution :) Thankfully now fully open again after Covid restrictions, including sit in cafe. Can get very busy on weekends and holidays, so plan accordingly. Not sure if their are staffing problems, but painfully slow service when busy at last visit.
Old fashioned ice cream like it used to be - been coming here for over 40 years and it’s still the same 😊
I haven't been here since I was a child and it was totally unchanged except the cafe was closed. The sweet shop and the taste of the ice cream was just as I remembered. We sat near the waterfall opposite the shop in the shade. The staff were friendly and patient despite the queue. It was a lovely trip down memory lane.
Have been coming to Suggitt's for an ice cream since I was a lad visiting my grandparents in Ayton... I now live in the village and still love the ice cream 🍦 😋
