After a few dodgy deliveries, the secret is to order and wait. When the food is really fresh, it's great. The sausces stay thick and flavorful and the meets soft and tender.

I usually don’t have takeaways but time constraints necessitated it twice this week. The Singapore rice noodles and the Schezuan veggies were excellent.
I have always used another Chinese in Hockley found on the high street but my last chouple of orders from them have not been that great so I though I would give this one a go for the first time. I have to say that every dish I ordered was much nicer and they delivered which the other take away doesn't. The chap taking my order was very nice on the phone and the order was delivered in 45 minutes which I would always expect for a Friday night especially as I live at the other end of Hockley. My only negative which is minor was that the plum sauce was too watery but still tasted ok. This is now my Chinese of choice in Hockley
Having grown up in the takeaway trade, I will say Gold Lion prepares Chinese takeaway food as it should be done! Have been a customer for few years and will keep going back. Fresh ingredients, decent sized portions, friendly staff.
We order from here every time we visit family in the area and always look forward to it. Decent sized portions, food great and reasonably priced.
Like all takeaways, you can order from the same place and, one time it's great, the next, meh. I find this place very much like that. Best of a bad bunch in Hockley/Hawkwell really.
As for the guy who answers the phone, heh, I wouldn't quite say rude but just very abrupt in a Chinese way. If you don't take it personally, it's quite funny. Almost like an oriental Basil Fawlty :D

Well, this place does what it says on the tin. However, get your act together with accepting card payments as you’ll go out of business within the next three years if you don’t bin the “cash only” policy.
