I recently discovered this wee lane on a visit to a thai restaurant around the corner. i will write about that fab thai in another post, but we dropped in here for a drink prior to my second visit to that same thai. This is bang in the middle of the city, off Bishopsgate, behind the high rises and financial hq's. That said, it still retains a local residential feel. It shows football, but it is by no means a yobbish crowd. Instead very polite football fans mix with cider lovers and the odd tourists. This place specialises in ale and cider, so you can really get to grips with the wide range of choice if it is your bag. They also offer food, the top end of good pub food with all the staple dishes such as pies, burgers and fish/chips. There is an open bar area as you come in, but booth seating on the side and even a little quiet corner for couples.
We went in for a quick glass of wine and were glad to discover this as option for city drinking without the crazy crowding. Also, with my partner being a huge football fan, it also presents a comfortable place to watch the games while I stuff my face with what looked like amazing food.
Great spot! Highly recommended.
This is probably the coolest pub in the area. With a great and large selection of ales and ciders that change regularly so you’ll never get bored if you ask for the staff suggestions on what’s new, nevertheless you’ll always find the classics you love. The atmosphere is relaxed and cosy with some nice background music.
What you can’t miss: The Scotch eggs – homemade and always fresh, definitely the best scotch eggs I’ve ever tried!
Otherwise you can also try the Spinach and feta samosas, the falafel and if are feeling really hungry (honestly: really hungry) go for the Sausage and mash with onion gravy! All food is homemade by the Chef and it is absolutely delicious.
They also offer group menus and sharing platters that are great to have a taste on almost all the food menu.
This pub offers a great selection of craft beers and ciders. I'm always trying to include this pub in my Friday evening pub-crawl route when I'm in the area. You won't be disappointed by the sausage rolls and scotch eggs available directly at the bar...
Cool pub, wide selection of beers. The williams is nice and tucked away just along from the breakfast club. This is an ale drinkers pub, a place to sit and work your way through the chalkboard of local and foreign craft beers and ciders.
The food here is so good with a wide selection for all tastes. As far as the beers themselves go I would recommend lagunitas or 3 Weiss monkeys.
This place is an absolute hidden gem right by Spitalfields. I will be honest I only discovered it when I couldn't get into the mayor of scaredy cat town next door. This is a cosy pub with a huge amount of ales & ciders on pumps & bottles. Rustically decorated with a few quirky touches like a blue piano & candles everywhere it has a homely feel to it. My personal highlight is the great selection of board games they have on offer - always a winner in my book. For this pubs location, it never seems that busy a great place for a lovely intimate drink & the food looked yummy too.
I spotted the recently refurbished Williams Ale & Cider House (keeping up with the beer revolution) down the road from The Mayor of Scaredy Cat Town on Artillery Lane, so we popped in with beer afficionado Sam to check out their 14 hand pulls and 7 taps.
Despite being so close to Liverpool Street, it wasn't busy for a Friday night and we managed to sit up at the bar. It's a great looking pub, and it gets lots of extra points from me for having a free to play piano, and regular live jazz.
We started with the wonderful Five Points Pale before moving on to ales from ELB, London Fields, Camden Town and Portobello. They have their very own "Spitalfields Brew" at 3.6% made for them as their house ale.
According to their website, they also have a quirky stew option on the food menu:
"Our unique stew of the day will sit on the back bar and be served in mess tins, with a spoon and a wedge of bread. The stew will change daily and when it’s gone it’s GONE."
Williams Ale and Cider House is another top pub with great beer in London, and gives the excellent Water Poet some competition. I do wonder what the Southampton Arms will think of the sign though...
Great burger and scotch egg. Traveled 20 minutes on the tube just for the cider and it was worth it. You can do small tastings of 3 for ale and cider.
Nice place but pricy. That's why 4 not 5. 3 dart boards in the back. The music is completely unsuitable for a pub that's why 3 for atmosphere.

Great food and drinks, amazing service and lovely atmosphere! We had visitors and wanted them to experience traditional English pub food and drinks. It worked out amazing and we spent a very lovely evening, would definitely come back again. Also, great location - next to Liverpool street station, so easy to access from all directions
Visited with my parents over the weekend! Nice pub and very friendly staff!
Had the chicken roast dinner - lovely roast potatoes, mulled wine red cabbage was to die for, delicious kale! The chicken was a tad dry and the Yorkshire pud slightly over done.
Had a dark chocolate brownie for dessert which was gorg!
Overall a nice experience!
We went to Williams for the cider and were not disappointed. These guys take their cider seriously and serve the real deal. To go with our cider, we ordered a Scottish egg and their fish & chips, which uses cider batter. Staff is very relaxed and helpful, and Williams has a warm atmosphere that really made us feel welcome. Absolutely recommend it.
Nice place with a good list of beer and well located (very close to Liverpool Street station). A couple of dart boards down the back are very entertaining too. Prices are a little punchy though (£8 a pint for some beers). Genuinely friendly bar staff
I was attracted by the cider tag.
Good range of ciders at cellar temperatures so worth a visit.
Updated. Quiet midday on a Monday but barman Tony made it a warm welcome.
Came in on Monday for a quick drink. Lovely little pub tucked away near Liverpool Street, atmosphere is great. Much better service than a lot of places, Zoe was really friendly and knows her beer! Definitely will be back, and highly recommend.

Update February 2023: Revisited this pub at a later hour during my next visit. This time, I was not so happy: The girl behind the bar knew nothing about the beers, wasn't terribly friendly either, and two of the four cask ales weren't available. Pity, my first impression had been so positive. So that's minus 1 star from last time.
Original review:
Spent a very pleasant two hours there on the trip home to Germany. With only 3 hours until having to leave for Stansted Airport, I didn't have the energy to face the push and shove in the heart of London, so I stayed in the area around Liverpool Street Station. There's plenty of pubs close to the station, but they're mostly conventional chained pubs and extremely busy (Nicholson's, you get the picture). This place is different: A great selection of real ale cask and keg beers, plus a nice, agreeably small menu. Of course the prices are elevated, but okay for London. The barman was knowledgeable and friendly, the decor is very pleasant, and above all: for the area, it was very quiet on a lazy Sunday afternoon (the pub is located in a small side street, very close to the station). Had three different pints, and a small dish, the grilled chorizo, which had a nice, slightly vinegary apple cider sauce. A-okay for UKP 7. I'm happy to have found this friendly, stylish place, and will go again when in the area. Highly recommended!
Lovely staff and great selection of ales. I went on a Friday night and the place was clean (unlike other pubs in the area) and people were well mannered too

It was a really good fish and cider, the only reason for not having 5 stars in the food category was the lower quality chips.
Way above your average pub!
Food: Every single dish I've tried has been absolutely amazing (scotch egg, Sunday roast, halloumi + pear salad, spinach & artichoke dip and crab cakes)
Drinks: Great selection of crafted ales and cider, the best part is that you can order flights (3x1/3 pint) to try several of them. The selection of wine is also great and the pleasent surprise was that all of them were available by the glass!
Price: It's not a cheap place, but considering the quality and size of the portions I think it's great value. As reference, Beef Sunday roast for £16, Tapas 3 x £18, Flight of ales 3 x 1/3 of pint for £4.80.

What a gorgeous boozer, great craft beer and it’s got air-con! So much better than the other pubs near Liverpool Street.
Five points best bitter in good condition but the railway porter was in exceptional form, so creamy and dark chocolate flavours.
Lovely pub, lovely staff and a great choice of ciders. Very well priced. Don't miss this gem! Thank you!
A great night at the Williams’- Kudos to the management and staff for making this place one with a great atmosphere backed up by some great ale choices and bar snacks!
See you soon!
