Think of Germany and the first thought that crosses ur mind is Beer and Oktoberfest. Most people are not much aware about the German cuisine and bring a Foodie myself, so I thought about doing a review about a fine German restaurant!!!!!
So decided to visit a German place time to enjoy a nice German beer over some exotic snacking post work.
The food is good, really tasty, good size and great value for money. They serve authentic Munich white sausage, Laberkase. We ordered a sausage platter, it was good, tasted awesome with so much variety and was such good value for the money spent.
Nice place and highly recommend!!!!
Working in the city in need of a holiday we decided to to find a place that at least for one evening would remind us of our best holiday escapes.
My date was excited to find tasty ciders and authentic beer that reminded him of family holidays. And I instantly felt whisked away with watching the humongous portion of meat served by men in lederhosen. The beef sausage was more inspiring that the pork schnitzel. The veg accompaniment included sauerkraut which actually my favorite item on offer. Not a beer drinker I stuck to my non German wine.
When I told my friend I’m going to a German restaurant for a taste of their culture I was met by a confused face because while the beer is widely acknowledged as one of the best in Europe if not the world with light and dark beers alike, what do Germans eat? . When I was asked this question, my only reply was sausages, which was much to the dismay of my self proclaimed cultured knowledge.
Normally I need no invitation to load up on weißbier so I could hardly wait to accept an invite to do the very same with Zomato.
The occasion? A foodie meet up.
The location? Bierschenke, Liverpool Street.
And it couldn't have got off to a better start, weißbier in hand within moments of arrival and pretzels to boot. I rubbed my eyes (metaphorically), had I died and gone to Himmel?
This was indeed confirmed upon the arrival of not one but two trays laden with meat. The first, a pork shank that was dusted off pretty quickly along with the meat loaf and dumplings flanking it. The second was piled high with several varieties of sausages, mashed potato, sauerkraut and chips!
Wunderbar.
If that wasn't enough to put the oompfh into our oompa, desserts followed. Similarly laden trays of sugared pancakes, strudel and ice cream along with 'beeramisu' meant we could barely get out the door upon exit. (Picture Augustus gloop ).
The food was not all either. We sampled a number of beers all hailing from Deutschland and all excellent. My favourite, the Rauchbier - a smoky bacon flavoured number to get the senses going.
All in all, excellent food and hosting. Not the most subtle dining experience but if you love German food like I do then get down there, city boy lad lad ladness is optional, but preferably don't be that guy.
Could you fit any more food on my plate?
Can I fit any more beer in my MASSIVE glass?
Could you fit any more people around this ridiculously long table?!
Ha, this is a great taste of the German drinking life, the sociable-ness of the beer halls and the enormous appetite for Bratwurst.
This is an absolute must for large groups, looking for a fun place to spend the evening. The waiting staff are really friendly and dressed up in Lederhosen, transporting you to a make-believe-Munich underground. The menu teaches you German phrases so you can believe for a few moments you are actually a German in a parallel universe.
The TV's show lots of sports and on Saturday there's a lively Oompah band. Plenty to keep you entertained.
As for the rest -
BEER=GUT (good)
FOOD=REICHLICH UND SCHMACKHAFT (plentiful and tasty)
It's really good value for money and my eyes were like 100 times bigger than my belly meaning I was unable to finish all of my yummy food. The Man was particularly happy with this pick (thanks Zomato & Bierschenke).
Will go again with loads more people and have a dance to the sounds of the Oompah band.
One day I hope I have room for pudding!
Between Liverpool Street and Monument lies the City of London, also known as the Square Mile it’s a pretty small area. I’ve worked in the City for nearly 5 years and food wise, in my opinion, it’s lacking a bit. There are some top restaurants here now, some of which are very much for a treat yo’self occasion and some I have been lucky enough to try. And then there are many a pub which all provide somewhere to grab a glass of wine but not really the nicest of places to stay for more than one and not much in between.

What do you think of when you imagine German food? Is it a pile of sauerkraut accompanied by a variation of wurst? Does your belly start to rumble when thinking of German food, or would you much rather be dreaming of another cuisines? Italian. Mexican. Thai. Anything but German? Do you even know what German cuisine really includes?
I was lucky enough to enjoy and evening with one of the owners of Bierschenke who took us on a tour of some of the beer and food they have on the menu. Beer and meat being some of the things I cherish most in this world, its safe to say I had a great time. One of the first things I noticed about our host was that he was well schooled in the drinking arts, he knew his beer, and more importantly he knew his German beer. This comes across in Bierschenke's menu too, they have a great selection of beers some of which are Bierschenke's own brews. I was having a ball sampling their wide selection of excellent German beers when the food started to arrive, that's when I really started to like the place, because the food is fantastic. You aren't going to find much outside of the usual German staple of meat, potato, sauerkraut here but they do it so well at Bierschenke you will be glad they have stuck to tradition. I cant wait to come back and try the pork knuckle, it looked amazing! To finish I'd just like to say another thing I really liked about the place were the prices, which were very reasonable despite Bierschenke's proximity to London's financial district, one of the best value places near Liverpool Street in my opinion.
The beer was great, had a good range of quality stuff. The food was fantastic, and really well priced. I especially loved the pretzel dumpling in gravy for only £2. Spacious and good atmosphere, even when quiet. Loved the glassware too. Will be back.
Used to be a regular attendee at the Bierschenke in Liverpool St, and so sad when it closed. They imported their sausages on a truck.
This new venue retains the vibe of the original. The food is incredible, the beer is incredible. I cannot recommend strongly enough.
Great visit for a catch up with friends. We were very well looked after. Food was good as well… I was particularly impressed with the Vegetarian and Vegan options!
I was lucky to get a table to myself at the end of September and octoberfest was getting ready. The vibe of this lace is amazing and the variety of German beers were great too. Reasonably priced for the area too at £7 a pint
Really fun place we got a couple large beers, a bottle of wine and a sharer platter between 3 and we left very full and drunk. There is table service and our waitor was very attentive. There was also a love band, which was good fun.
Glad that Bierschenke is finally open again! It’s definitely the best and most authentic German food (and beer) you’ll get in London. Value for money is also pretty good - highly
recommend!
Great place! Really has a lovely and unique ambiance. They really transport you to Germany with their beer, food, and atmosphere. Rich the manager really know his stuff, too. Recommended an amazing beer. Definitely going back.
I ordered roasted pork shared for 2 , it taste amazing and tuned perfectly
My friend and I have been here twice now we love it. The waitresses wear traditional German costumes and are very friendly as are all the staff. The food is great and good value It's a very large venue perfect for large groups as well as small ones.
The platter for 5 was so good, it was definitely enough for 5 people. The apple strudel was also very good
