Had such a nice lunch with my bf today for his birthday. The food was fab and the service great! They helped with the organisation of the meal as I had some special request and brought out the dessert with a candle! Such a nice touch. We're almost talking about when we'll be back!

Very vibrant ideal for pre theatre dining. Does get loud but not off putting. Seating up and downstairs. We had the £20 meal with bubbles and paid extra for water. Good choice of food, very nice quality and presented. Food fresh and staff knew the menu. We went for 5pm and it was quiet but had got very busy by 6.30.

We arrived later than I had booked to have a meal prior to a show (tube delays) but they had held our table. When we said we were going to the theatre they said they would put a rush on our food which they did. We had plenty of time to eat our 3 course meal which was very tasty. The people on the table next to us had complained about very salty food but ours were fine. Portion sizes for the main course weren’t big but very tasty. They do add a 12.5% service charge but we only paid 10% which they accepted fine. All in all a great little restaurant very close to the Piccadilly theatre where we were going. Would go again. 3 course fixed menu was good value at £20.

The Italian restaurant Mele e Pere in Brewer Street, Soho, has been on my list of places to try out for a little while. When I read an enticing review of a restaurant in London, then I’ve taken to making a note of it on my iPhone. Tonight was an ideal time to try Mele e Pere out for I was going to a talk at the National Portrait Gallery at 7.30 and I knew it would only be a short walk from meal to gallery.

Three booked for dinner, had an idea it would be good. Not only was it good but it was all I had expected and more. Pre-dinner drinks and menu browsing all very relaxed. No rushing. Two had starters, I looked on in envy; mains arrived and not a word said - sign of a great meal - no talking - except for how is yours? Fab ! Monica came out to say hello to her patrons. What a woman, Chef behind doors and delightful person front of house. Dessert just for me arrived (that's why no starter) Delightful, exactly what I needed to finish. I would most definitely return (bring the Fathers credit card). Go there, see and taste how wonderful food is when prepared and presented with such love.

Mele e Pere is just one of the many restaurants that has been on my must eat list for yonks! I was looking for somewhere central and low-key for my birthday meal with the fam. Mele e Pere is located smack bang in the middle of Soho so when I saw there was a brilliant Bookatable deal there I was sold!

nice restaurant in the heart of soho! truthfully Italian taste and service. perfect location for a night out and if you want to be treated and if you don't mind spend few more quids than a usual dinner. I have shared a t bone fiorentina (30£ per person) and few starters such as polenta with lamb (tasted amazing). I would definitely recommend even the price is it a bit too over the real value.

Good food and location. The room downstairs was quirky and modern and the staff really friendly. The menu was encouraging and the food was good but nothing outstanding. Often have a 3 course and glass of bubbles offer for £20 in which case you can't go wrong. Good place for after work dinner but don't go out of your way to get there.

My Italian friends really rate Mele e Pere for a taste of home. Having tried their polenta and slow cooked beef, if this is true Italian cooking than sign me up. The polenta was creamy, the beef ridiculously tender- it fell apart with a brush of my fork- and the flavour was just deep, meaty and real comfort food.

The ground floor is great to grab a bite to eat over lunch from one of the window facing seats or head downstairs for a more leisurely meal with friends.

Mele E Pere was opened by Andrea Mantovani and Peter Hughes, who met whilst working in the Michelin-starred Wild Honey. Having both grown up in northern Italy, they shared a dream of opening a Trattoria reminiscent to those of their childhood.

Mele E Pere in English means 'apples and pears’ and this reflects the window display filled with numerous glass apples and pears, as well as the majority of eating space being located downstairs. I'd like to Adam and Eve that there is a chef out back with an Italian accent shouting Cockney rhyming slang.

Opened in Soho in 2012 Mele e Pere offers a menu of sharing plates or a 3 course dining menu with British produce and Italian ingredients. I’d already scanned the menu online earlier that day, so I just sat and supped my grapefruit and basil aperol, pretending to decide, wishing my friends would hurry up.

Lamb meatballs in a tomato sauce with pecorino cheese were delicious. A deep flavour from the lamb with sweetness from the sauce and subtle saltiness from the cheese was very pleasing. The deep fried squid with smoked aioli was some of the best I’ve had. The batter was light and crispy so you can actually taste the well-cooked squid inside. I was really impressed; I could have eaten bowls of it.

Bigoli with prawns, broccoli and sundried tomatoes was a dish one of my friends ordered. It looked sublime with prawns sat on the bigoli which was soaked in sauce. I don’t know if my friend is just rude or simply forgot to let me have a taste, but I didn’t get a look in. They did inform me however, that they wanted another plate. Fillet of cod with peas, walnuts and a prawn bisque was beautiful. The fish was cooked extremely well and with the flavour of the bisque it was like a taste from the ocean. I also really enjoyed the walnuts on top, which gave an added and welcome texture. Gnocchi with truffle was a dish recommended to me beforehand and I’m so glad it was. Little soft bundles of joy covered in a buttery sauce infused with saffron and topped with truffle shavings was a thing of beauty. It was rich, comforting and scrumptious! It’s a staple dish of all my friends who dine here on a very regular basis.

Dessert was Sicilian lemon custard, lychee sorbet and fresh marshmallow. Sweet peaks of marshmallow balanced atop a sharp custard and cleansing sorbet. The dish did lack a significant texture and was quite sloppy. The type of dessert that never seems to empty.

I really enjoyed Mele E Pere. The food was delicious, comforting and well-priced. It is pretentious food in an unpretentious place. A place for food lovers. A home for my fellow scoffers. My only criticism would be of the service we experienced from a staff member. I hate to feel like being somewhere is a favour to them or at worst an inconvenience. It was a single incident that I would be remiss not to mention as it was spoken about at our table but it does not detract from the food. We were also given a free vermouth so I might sound slightly churlish. I was happy that one of my friends is pregnant so I could also down theirs before I jumped in to my uber.

This restaurant is a true hidden gem that your friends will talk about passionately about and deservedly so.

When I first went to Mele e Pere I was really, really, really drunk.

I'd gone for a couple of quiet drinks on my birthday and, well, one thing led to another and I ended up in Soho with two friends.

Anyway, from the very hazy memories I have of that evening, dinner at this subterranean restaurant on Brewer Street was excellent, so I vowed to go back...and five months later I have!

Mele e Pere (apples and pears in Italian) calls itself a trattoria and vermouth bar. At street level, a small dining area looks almost cafe-like, but the basement opens out into a large and stylish dining room - an eclectic mix of tables and a large, copper (and well-stocked bar).

On this return visit it was very early evening and I was with my mum and sister for the pre-theatre menu - a very decent £19.50 for three courses.

Of course, I began with one of the house vermouths - sweet, yet bitter and served with plenty of ice.

Coppa with artichoke hearts and pecorino was beautifully presented as a starter (x2) alongside a San daniele ham, gnocchi fritti and parmesan dish from the a la carte menu (my mum just had to be different!)

The starters really set the mood - great ingredients, simply yet skilfully put together - but the mains really brought the skills of the kitchen team to the fore.

A great lump of porchetta with smoked aubergine paste ordered by my sister was nigh on melt-in-the-mouth. At the end she had left a small pile of the pork fat on the side of the plate, and in an act that made me realise I'm becoming disturbingly like my father, I swiped and greedily gobbled it all up.

If I'd ordered first I would have gone for the pork, but in the spirit of being different, I plumped for the hake served with courgette and in a sticky sweet sauce. Ordered with a bowl of chips, this felt like the most decadent way to eat fish and chips on Good Friday.

Tagliatelle with beef ragù was served to my mother - so simple yet absolutely spot-on!

Desserts were all winners - and like the starters all triumphs of prior preparation rather than on-the-night flamboyance. Tiramisu was packed densely inside a glass as was the Sicilian lemon custard with lychee ice cream and fresh marshmallow. A scoop of Pistachio ice cream actually tasted like pistachio and not just an exaggerated imitation of that most wonderful of nuts.

However drunk I was on that birthday night, I remembered I'd had a really decent meal and this return visit proved just that.

The cooking is key to Mele e Pere's success, but it also manages to do stylish and trendy, without being pretentious and a bit wanky!

Come here with your friends, family, loved ones...I feel there's something here for everyone.

A fine addition to Soho and the West End generally. Will return...sooner this time.

Fave new restaurant. Have been to Mele e Pere a number of times and have had a great experience every time. Central, convenient location, very easy to meet for drinks (love the prosecco on tap!), and dinner is always impressive. Highly recommend the pork belly, T-bone steak alla Fiorentina, the olives are amazing, and all of the pastas that I have had have been very good. Great food, reasonable prices, and takes bookings in Soho, which is very rare.

So bang slap in the middle of Soho there's a smart restaurant serving honest, unfussy Italian food and interesting drinks at fair prices - you just need to know that it's there, and now you do. One of the categories on the wine list is 'Hidden Treasures'; it's a category Mele e Pere falls into itself.

Tucked away downstairs, Mele e Pere is a mellow and comfortable setting and feels really cosy at night.

One unusual thing about it is the fantastic vermouth bar. Not my usual tipple but I was happy to try it and was pleasantly surprised.

I would describe the food as honest, indulgent Italian and by that I mean you can taste its authenticity in every mouthful. I love a good gnocchi dish and was blown away by the truffle spin on it here.

The menu changes daily and perhaps the other most obvious example of their willingness to create new things is their tobacco flavoured ice-cream. I felt I had to try it for novelty's sake, but it was actually a bit gross. A shame, but I applaud their inventiveness.

Down a spiral staircase after entering a fairly normal looking doorway in soho lies Mele e Pere a delightful Italian restaurant. My first thought when entering a non-branded Italian restaurant in the centre of soho was how much is this going to hurt my wallet. I was actually extremely surprised by the incredibly polite and relaxed staff, the smart but casual vibe, the delicious food and the fact that I left with my overdraft intact. The food is excellent with perfect portion sizes for the average stomach, presented neatly and at a moderate price. The cocktails were excellent, varied and authentic. I can't really explain it but despite being in the centre of soho the restaurant feels far removed from this area in terms of it's values; offering lovely food in an unpretentious environment for a fair price effortlessly transporting you a small village in Italy. High praise but well earned.

On their amazing Vermouth tasting they do there:

Vermouth. Now there’s a tipple I’ve always wholly disregarded. Something to bang in a martini, something that sits at the back of my parents’ spirit shelf, sticky and collecting dust, something not very nice. And so, when invited to attend a monthly vermouth tasting at popular Soho restaurant Mele e Pere, I’ll admit, it was more the inclusion of several plates of high quality Italian food within the modest £15 price tag that enticed me...

You could quite easily walk straight past mele e pere whilst out and about in Soho scouting for a good place to eat and drink. Rest assured you'd be missing out, as beneath the elegantly simplistic upstairs bar facing onto Brewer Street, extends a spacious and welcoming basement, where the serious business of rustic Italian trattoria dining at its finest takes place. We sat in the upstairs bar before dinner, sipping gin martinis, absorbing the laid back vibe. Staff genially busied about the floor and a couple next to us took delivery of a profiterole dessert I was so impressed by that I rudely asked its recipient diners if I could take a picture. They kindly obliged and in fact joined in the fun. Take a look at the beauteous object and you might understand just how such temptation took hold.

Mele e pere means apples and pears in Italian, or stairs in London cockney rhyming slang, which is cute seeing as their extensive collection of blown glass apples and pears comprises the entire wall beside the stairs you descend to get in amongst it in the basement, which features a stunning copper topped bar stocking an assortment of vermouths blended by their team and bottled in beautifully ornate glassware. If you are so inclined you can join in the vermouth revival movement by attending a class hosted by their head sommelier Ed Scothern, where you will learn how to blend different vermouths, and naturally, to drink them too. This is great value at only £15.00 which includes cicchetti (light bites such as olives, ham and squid).

Our meal was a culinary delight from start to finish. Rather than choosing mains, we selected a number of starting plates to share, so as to graze gently and savour the experience. Seirass ricotta, fresh peas, purple sprouting broccoli and smoked bacon was an excellent blend of flavours and textures, creamy mild Piedmonte ricotta blending beautifully with tangy, salty bacon, freshened with lightly blanched greens. Salad of grilled octopus and calamari was cooked to tender perfection, fruity olive oil giving a gorgeous warmth to softened potato, dressed with fresh wild garlic leaves. Hand chopped beef tartare, Italian leaves and quail’s egg was perhaps my favourite, as the quality of the beef, the oozing yolks and the overall lightness of the dish really worked. It struck me that careful consideration has been given when creating this menu, as the combination of dishes worked well together and the balance of flavours overall was a total success. It took a little while and several samples to get it just right, but we certainly got there in the end, selecting a bottle of white wine with great minerals from Trentino, chosen from their Indigenous whites "hidden treasures" list, going by the glamorous name of Giuseppe Fanti. We signed off with a dessert of lemon custard, lychee ice cream and fresh marshmallow. In essence an Italian take on lemon meringue pie without pastry, this citrus bomb cloaked in a duvet of freshly toasted marshmallow was the perfect ending to a wonderful meal. I did however turn a little green with envy when I saw the diner on the table behind us beam with glee as his T-Bone steak arrived, huge and darkly glistening in a cast iron skillet, so there we have it, as if it was even needed: an excuse to return and indulge once again.

I finally made it to Mele e Pere in Soho - an Italian Trattoria & Vermouth Bar whose colourful apples & pears (get it?) I have often admired from afar when passing. Continuing with the cockney rhyming slang, most of Mele e Pere is tucked away down the stairs with the bar, but there a few tables that benefit from natural light as you walk in.

I considered my options over a glass of their homemade vermouth (more on that later), before ordering a few sharing plates & small pasta dishes. Large pasta plates and main courses are available if you aren't in a sharing mood. There are excellent lunch and pre-theatre deals to be taken advantage of too.

Everything that followed was delightful. From the Sharing Plates, Aubergine Parmigiana stood out, along with a beautifully presented Hand Chopped Beef Tartare (with Italian leaves and Quail's egg) and a wonderfully light plate of Ricotta piemontese, peas, purple broccoli and smoked bacon.

Moving on to the pasta, I was intrigued by Tropea Onion Ravioli with Seaweed, Baby Squid and Lemon Sole - a smartly put together dish that wasn't overpowered by either the onion or the seaweed. The one dish that you absolutely have to order though is Potato Gnocchi with Umbrian Black Truffle, a ridiculous plate of buttery goodness that you will foolishly stuff into your face before your body realises what's going on. Order the large version at your peril.

These were washed down with glasses of 2011 Montenidoli Vernaccia di San Gimignano which was one of their wine picks for the month. They have an impressive list celebrating the best of Natural, Organic and Biodynamics wines of the world. Maybe pay them a visit during London Wine Week (2nd-8th June).

I finished off with a healthy scoop of Pistachio ice cream, a worthy rival to Scoop and Gelupo round the corner. Had it been slightly later in the day, I might have got myself a boozy Kam-Peet-Up (Laphroaig, Punt e Mes, Kamm & Sons Ginseng & House Orange Vodka) from their After Dinner cocktail list.

It was a superb lunch - impressive cooking, great drinks, a lovely atmosphere, friendly service and affordable prices.

There are so many establishments in London dishing out plates that look like they belong in the results of an ‘Italian food’ Google image search - a mass of spaghetti with a generic sauce plonked on top, sporting a pair of perky basil leaves.

‘Italian’ food, as many people know it - by which I mean a bunch of stock pasta and pizza options - is so often the default offering chosen by restaurants, as dishes are deceptively simple and hot carbs with cheese will always please the masses. But it’s also very easy to make them mediocre, or worse still, poor. And a lot of them do. Not to mention these places do little to represent the far-reaching range of regional Italian cooking - it’s not all spag bol and carbonara made with cream *shudders*.

So thank goodness for the very good places in town that do truly represent the variety and quality of Italian food - the likes of Bocca di Lupo, Zucca, Locanda Locatelli and now also, Mele e Pere.

Occupying a prime location on the corner of Brewer Street and Great Pulteney Street in the middle of the dining hotspot that is Soho, the heart of Mele e Pere (“apples and pears”) is found below ground. Continue down a flight of tiled stairs - past the few tables, window bar-seating and mirrored wall adorned with glass apples and pears upon entrance - and diners are greeted with an impressive copper-topped bar and a large yet restful dining space.

My companion was someone who knows the restaurant and the dishes well, so I said that thing that is either well-received or slightly aggravating in this situation; “I eat anything, I’ll leave the ordering to you - whatever you think is good”. The reply to which was, “Well, it’s all good”. Dammit.

“But we must get the smoked swordfish carpaccio. And the aubergine parmigiana. Because it’s gorgeous. And the potato gnocchi with truffle - god, that’s really good. And the vitello tonnato”. This was going well.

Before I could prioritise that day’s menu according to which words I wanted to eat the most (they were coming out level-pegging, an unhelpful case of “all of the above please?”), a plate of three fresh-from-the-oven pillowy focaccia buns appeared, their aroma heavy with olive oil, sporting hats of pesto and something cooling I think was crème fraîche (£2.50). Shortly after, deep-fried ascolana olives stuffed with a little heat and served still warm, simultaneously crisp and ripe (£3.50).

Then a plate of partially translucent mackerel tartare with crunchy baby radishes and bergamot; there was a punchy hit of mustard in the mix and piquant pickled cucumbers to cut through the flesh*. It agreed with my oily-fish sentiments entirely: the best way to enjoy them is raw. A complete pleasure. A third plate - quenelles of chicken liver parfait with wine-poached pear, little mushrooms, Italian leaf and a bright yellow pansy - was something I wanted to photograph as much as eat. Velvety, rich and cooling pâté, sweet fruit, sprightly leaves. Another solid entry*.

The swordfish carpaccio bore the colour of a girl’s cheek after its first peck from a boy; flushed pink and with batons of vibrant crisp radishes and cornichons standing to attention - it was delicate and delightful (£6.50). Vitello tonnato is a Piedmontese antipasto of thinly sliced veal covered in a mayonnaise-like sauce, bolstered with capers, anchovies and lemon - all great things that cause the tip of the tongue to smack the roof of the mouth (£6).

And then there was the aubergine parmigiana with pesto - a glorious mess of smoky aubergine mush, stretching cheese and sweet tomato meeting in a piping-hot melty mass of what can only be described as unadulterated out-of-the-oven pleasure (£6).

And the potato gnocchi glowing from saffron with generous shavings of pungent Umbrian black truffle? Well, there’s little point trying to evade it. You know you want it and if it’s there, you will order it. And once it arrives, you’ll be its prisoner until the bowl is clean. There’s probably only five ingredients involved, and the beauty is in its (luxurious, decadent, buttery) simplicity (£7.50 for the small portion).

There was no room for dessert. Even my second stomach - usually reserved for sweets - let me down. I was defeated, by what was a very good lunch; I’m happy to take a beating like that any day.

Mele e Pere has daily changing menus: lunch specials at £8.50, pre-theatre set menus of three courses with a glass of prosecco for £18 (both with entirely different dishes to the a la carte), the option of small or large portions for pasta, substantial mains and a bar specialising in vermouth.

With such lovingly-prepared and well-executed creativity from Head Chef Andrea Mantovani available at very accessible prices, this is the restaurant card to keep in the back pocket and pull out when - well, whenever.

Liked lots: gnocchi, focaccia, aubergine parmigiana, mackerel tartare, location, prices, creativity
Liked less: the main dining area being without natural light
Good for: frequently changing menus, frequent visits, all occasions, quality food at affordable prices, vermouth (so I hear - must return to try some)

Saturday night. Soho. You can almost feel the waves of trendy washing over you.

4 of us descend on Mele e Pere, enchanted by the twinkly glass Apple, Pears and Tomatoes in the window - which gives the place an air of the gallery about it. Incidentally I've now googled Mele e Pere and discovered it means Apples and Pears. The tomatoes are imposters!

The menu comprises of a selection of sharing plates to start and pasta & larger mains to follow - so far pretty standard Italian fare. We opt for deep fried squid, smoked swordfish, buffalo mozzarella, Fennel salami and Olives & Bread to start. The highlight for me was the Fennel Salami - I found the breaded pastry style things (Gnocchi Fritti according to the menu) dry and unappetising, but the salami was lick your lips delicious. Squid was well cooked although this unrefined palate didn't detect any smokiness to the aioli as advertised. The swordfish salad was light & refreshing and the buffalo mozzarella also came with a zing in the form of the accompanying anchovy dressing.

Next up - the pastas. 2 of us opted for the Globe Artichoke Ravioli with Monks Beard & Bottarga with Darling Husband opting for the Bucatini Amatriciana and W for the Fregola with artichoke and Broccoli.

Having discovered that Bottarga was a type of compressed fish roe, I spent a fair amount of time digging for it - but either the taste was too subtle for me or what I imagined to be other ingredients was in fact the Bottarga - I missed it completely!

Nevertheless, the ravioli was soft, succulent and a very generous sized portion. Darling Husband did admit to some food envy when comparing the ravioli with his bucatini (Sort of Penne) but still didn't hesitate in polishing his plate off. The fregola (a pasta that resembles couscous) was also given a hearty thumbs up.

The waiter, a cheeky/flirty Italian (Is there any other kind?) was charming, helpful and friendly without being overbearing. Overall, a great hit and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend if you were cruising the Soho streets.

Really great service, thanks to all here, as well as 10/10 food (we had the ham pizza and carbonara) which is authentic and served in a very fast turnaround (maybe 5-10mins from ordering max) and yet no compromise on quality. Definitely will come back again when we are in brighter spirits to appreciate it truly! Oh, and amazing value here too! Great prices for the location and quality

We had a wonderful time. All of the staff were lovely and the food was amazing! We started out with olives, focaccia, and calamari. We shared the T-bone steak between 4 of us along with a few pasta dishes, a pizza with a bottle of Sangiovese!

Incredible Italian food. Booked a table between a theatre show, was able to bring the booking forward as we arrived early. Reasonably priced, 3 starters and 2 mains with 2 soft drinks for £60. Food was very well presented and very tasty as well as great portion sizes for the prices. Would go again if in the area.

Visiting My Parent’s From Glasgow. We just came across this lovely wee Gem. Luke take us from the restaurant outside and looked after us for the whole night. We would have happily stayed all evening just to listen to him talk, the way he treated us was simply enthralling. Big 👍 for the Bolignese pasta. Place bit too warm even if was raining outside. Must go when in London

Went here for cocktails and snacks whilst wandering around London on a Friday night. Was a great little find and very busy so we’re lucky to get a table. Service was great, not amazingly quick but we weren’t in any rush! Food and drinks were excellent, although I’ll not be having the Truffle cocktail again (not for me!) Lovely place and would definitely recommend if you are in the area

Entering the restaurant, the guy greeting was lovely. Starters were great - deep fried olives and calamari. However was a bit let down by the pasta main -a bit too al dente and a bit cold, not really worth the price to be honest. Table service good. Added extra £1 to bill without warning which didn’t like, although it was not a lot, it’s good to mention -I did look up what this was and it was for a good cause so did not want to remove, however I think customers should be made aware instead of adding it to their bill.

Excellent italian food. Menu is limited and renewed seasonally but definitely fine dining. Good value. Highly recommended.

As first time diners, we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch experience at Mele e Pere. The food was freshly prepared and scrumptious. 10/10 service by the team on the day who ensured that my other half's birthday celebration was special. Thank you for your kindness and the exceptional service.
