We had an amazing experience at the River Cafe, guided by a friend who is a River Cafe-expert. I cannot name every dish we tried and shared but from the antipasti, through the meat and fish dishes, to the desserts, everything was super tasty. The staff was very professional but at the same time friendly and warm, and I loved the open kitchen inside. It is not for everyone's pocket of course (me included) but it's really worth the visit!

I had heard plenty about this place and never realised I had walked past it multiple times without realising what it was. For a Michelin star, I wasn’t expecting the slightly casual decor/table settings with random fluro panels. The food was delicious, we ordered plates to share between the three of us but I think this establishment is more order your own starter and main. The standouts was the bruschetta and the tortellini. The cheese would have been nice with some chutney/fruit accompaniments. The grappa pannacotta...wow, unless you LOVE grappa I would steer clear. Service was attentive enough, very busy restaurant for a weekday lunch. Extremely pricey over £100 per head including a couple of drinks

One of the best meals of recent times.
The place itself is a little bit out there if you are within the heart of central London but the pasta and the entrees and especially the dessert were top notch. Had a minor issue with the wine sommelier pouring us wine that had cork all over it and initially suggesting to filter out the cork which was strange but other than that great experience.

Thames Wharf, Rainville Road, London W6 9HA.   Tel.: 020 7386 4200. Oh drat and double drat! I knew this situation would sneak up on me at some point, that dreaded moment, when dinner at one of my favourite restaurants would go pear shaped. The River Café (yup, the one with the famous cookbooks) has, over many many years been not just a favourite, but consistently right up there on my list of top three London restaurants. This restaurant, where Jamie Oliver, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, April Bloomfield (Spotted Pig, New York) and Sam Clark (Moro) learnt their trade, along with other master chefs all over the world, has never, not once, disappointed me in over two decades. It’s smart, it’s chic, it’s stylish, and it’s casual, comfortable and welcoming all at the same time. Hidden away in a little side street in unsalubrious Hammersmith, the Café which is really a restaurant, started life as the staff canteen of mega architect Richard Roger’s practice. It was run, as it still is, by his wife Ruth Rogers and her friend, the late Rose Gray. I could wax lyrical about Richard Rogers’ fabulous modernist work, but suffice it to say that his practice was chosen to rebuild Tower 3 of the Worlds Trade Centre in New York after it’s destruction in the 9/11 attacks. You get the picture, the guy builds nice buildings.

Two beautiful restaurants in two days, I am a lucky girl. I've been hearing stories about the esteemed River Cafe and have never managed to catch a reservation.

I started off with the mozzarella, a generous portion with a series of sweet and savoury samples to experiment with. Very well portioned as it widens your appetite to prepare for the main event.

Monkfish. Oh how I love my monkfish. This was a truly exceptional plate, a tad too much olive oil for my preference but it took nothing away from the perfectly cooked monkfish. Oh I could have eaten it forever.

We ended the lovely dinner on a sweet note, lemon tart. My favourite. And finally! A lemon tart that was bruled on top. I've been craving that one for a while.

Definitely worth it, but if you're on a budget stay away. Starters start from £20 and mains set you back in the late 30's.

My opinion, oh worth it.

So why such a named place, like River Cafe would become an institution ??? Yes, a cafe by the river as the name state it !!! But, it is more like little hidden Italy by the river...Some people would argue that without Jamie Oliver, (who I respect a lot as a Chef but also as a kind individual!!!)  this place would be nothing !!! Well wrong, it is the other way around... The ladies over there have been cooking a long time ago, when Jamie started washing up the dishes in his pub, and this is also the way I started, from the bottom up, and I do love his passion for Italian food also and everything he does for the community !!!But, today, I still prefer the clean, tasty and traditional style of the River Cafe!!! It is simple!!! Keep it simple...As always Flat Eric...

Lovely bright cafe style restaurant. The food was good but not amazing. I had the veal to start which was a generous portions size and tasty, and a recommeneded red white which was delicious. My primo was a risotto with cougette flower, and majoram, this was ok. The majoram was a little overpowering, and the risotto a little wet for my liking. The chocolate nemesis was a hefty desert which I was lucky enough to be sharing, as I could not have finished it on my own. It was delicious though, and again my desert wine matched perfectly.

I was expecting great things from here but it seems I'm still to find my great italian restaurant in London!

Italian - London style.. Not the easiest place to get to but worth the trip. Food and service were pretty faultless. I had the seared calamari to start which tasted very fresh and cooked to perfection although the chopped chilli on the side could have been a little more inventively considered. The portion was large - almost too much for a starter but these are minor quibbles!
The ham wrapped fillet of beef for main was lovely and again perfectly cooked for me.
We didnt have desert but I would love to go back and take a more time to sample more of the menu.
Beware though - it is not cheap!

Simply The Best. The River Cafe never fails. Superb atmosphere - the 'mise en scene' is perfect - wonderful lighting, making women look more beautiful, the freshest of fresh ingredients used in deceptively simple dishes, charming and attractive staff and - until recent illness - the constant presence of one of the founders to ensure its standards never drop. The tables are bit close together and the hubub almost engulfs the room in the late evening (it's never less than totally full), and if you are seated too close to the open fire it can be a bit warm….but these are quibbles. Take your fullest wallet, your prettiest friends and a taxi (because you won't find it if you try and drive there and you want more of that delicious Pinot Bianco and a grappa to finish off with).

The River Café was founded by Rose Gray and Ruth Rogers in 1987 as a canteen for local office workers. It is responsible for training some of today's most recognised chefs, including the likes of Jamie Oliver, Theo Randall and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall. It is also regarded as one of the most influential restaurants of the past two decades, bringing such ingredients as sun dried tomatoes, polenta and olive oil into the mainstream consciousness of the UK.

They offer a three course mid-week lunch, priced at £30 per head but time was a little tight so we opted to go a la carte. One word sprung to mind: expensive. I’d heard that this place is on the pricey side and that’s certainly the case. We shared two starters, firstly the Mozzarella di Bufala with figs and 12-year-old balsamic vinegar. Amazing mozzarella, creamy, some bite but not chewy or sludgy like the awful shit you get at Sainsbury. The balsamic vinegar was just beautiful, I could have licked the plate. The figs outstanding, there’s something amazing about a good fig, these were beautiful, sweet and tender. Our second starter was the Linguine con Granchio – with fresh Devon crab, fennel seeds, chilli & lemon. I got a few little pieces of shell in my linguine which made me a little cautious gobbling this down. So when the prices are as high as they are at the River Cafe you're expecting a real treat. Throw into the mix its Michelin star and a reputation earned over 25 years at the coal face of the London restaurant scene, and the expectations go through the roof. Perhaps that is unfair. Perhaps I should have just considered what was on the plate in front of me - but I don't think that is possible. Value matters.

The River Café’s approach to sourcing food is second to none. Ruth Rogers and Rose Gray’s reverence for simple, seasonal ingredients can be seen on every plate, and has clearly been passed on to their numerous graduates, the list of which reads like a who’s who of all that is good about cooking today (Sam and Sam Clark of Moro fame, Theo Randall, Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Ed Baines, April Bloomfield, Allegra McEvedy and Jamie Oliver to name a few). The new wave of wonderful London Italians (Trullo, Zucca, Tinello, Bocca di Lupo…) all give a nod to this grande dame and, while some might argue that their diminutive prices and superlative cooking take them one step ahead of the more elderly institution, I think The River Café is still at the top of its game.

Some people can always say where they were when they heard a particular piece of news, or when a major even happened. Well on March 31 st 2004, my life changed forever. There was no major international incident, no national disaster to contend with. It was just a simple cooked meal with the finest ingredients that Italy could offer in a trendy restaurant by the river in Hammersmith. Up until that point fine food had never passed my lips. Years of travelling had taught me where to get good nourishing and cheap food, but fine food never came into the equation. Food with Spice had ruled my palette, as my travels up to that point had really only taken me to India, South East Asia and Central America. Heat I was used to. Perfectly cooked food with subtle seasoning I was not. It was enlightening. What I ate that night I cannot remember, but we did have a great night, and our food lives changed forever after that experience. We'd been back to the River Café on many an occasion, but not for t

Some restaurants have regulars. Some restaurants have fans. Some restaurants inspire the kind of loyalty that have customers happily queuing down the street for just the chance to spend money within their hallowed walls. But surely there's only one joint in London inspires a kind of fervour that's best described as cultish. How do I even begin to write a post about the River Café, probably the closest thing London has to a restaurant sacred cow, whose customers regularly describe the place as "the best restaurant in the world" without fear of being rebuked, and whose staff are so fanatically loyal a stint of 5 or more years is normal in an industry where most people are doing well to last 5 weeks. The merest mention on Twitter I was headed there for dinner prompted a dozen feverish replies whose terrifying subtext - "say something bad, I DARE YOU " - could hardly have been more obvious. So I approach the following with some tripidation. Let me be clear from the outset (he says changing

This is actually one of my most preferred spots in the city. It is reminiscent of the lovely restaurants I used to visit back home. It has a truly equestrian and authentic quality. The food is brilliant, and it is unpretentious and authentic. The theme of simplicity is enticing. I've been to several amazing restaurants around Europe, but this one is by far my absolute favorite. Almost all the things that we ordered at this restaurant tasted amazing and were presented in an amazing way.
We ordered a Grilled Calamari, which was prepared with fresh squids, and I've never had such an amazing squid in my entire life. The beef we ordered was perfectly roasted and tasted delicious.
The ambiance of the restaurant was vibrant and most of the servers were quite delightful. The server suggested us a wine, which was brilliant and most of the other dishes ordered by us were absolutely delicious and truly mouth-watering.

This is the res I've been waiting for, for the longest time...and for it to come on a special occasion, and for lunch, in the summer time too, meant it was always going to be a surefire winner. The food is multi-regional Italian, with a focus on fresh Mediterranean flavours, plenty of seafood, salads, and a decadent selection of desserts. We ordered a crab salad, bufala mozzarella plate, and mushroom ravioli, the battered veal and the Dorset blue lobster with fried artichokes. Accompanied by fresh white peach bellinis, and a delicious Soave, an Italian chardonnay style white - warm honey with a fresh mouth feel, incredible. Desserts were almond tart with strawberries, a panacotta with grappa and raspberries, and the summer pudding. The food was impeccably cooked, the service warm, friendly and attentive. The restaurant shines, with sunlight and freshness, it's a lovely place. And the price is staggering, but it was worth it.

The River Café is an italian food institution founded by Rose Gray and Ruby Rogers with the accomplishment of having 1 Michelin Star, has trained many celebrity chef. The restaurant evolves around high quality ingredients sourced from UK and abroad and menu changes according to the season and what produce there is to offer.

I’ve heard of River Café as the standard of italian cooking and so I just have to come try and was warn by the price it charges…

The menu is split into four categories: antipasti (starters), primi (first course), secondi (main course) and dolci (dessert).. With us 4 at the table, we all agree to share and best try what there is to offer… So for start we got langoustine with cannelloni beans, grilled calamari with chilli and lime and wild mushroom risotto.

What I notice is that the menu is simple, as in the dish was not complicated and over sophisticated but rather simple and straight forward… these starters were amazing… The octopus was tender and sweet plus the grilled mark gave that charred effect and the heat from the chilli and acidic lemon brightens it up.. The risotto is one of the best I had, creamy, fragrant and earthy, like you in mushroom land!
The langoustine is also fresh and sweet.. A really good start.

For mains, we got the sirloin steak with spinach and chickpeas, calves liver with sage and parmesan polenta. Seabass with swiss chard, artichoke and olives and spaghetti alla vongole and Taglierini with tomato sauce.

The vongole dish was super salty and was just too much, but we mentioned to the staff they explained the reason and change it right away so that we could choose something else… A very impressive gesture… So we went for the taglierini, the pasta was cooked to al dente but the sauce was just lacking in something with a wow factor… The sirloin on the other hand was tender and flavoursome, meaty and savoury cut by a squeeze of lemon and eaten with chickpeas and cima di rape were a great match..
The seabass was sweet and super fresh that went very well with the olives tapanade and artichokes.. The calves liver was tender and creamy but the polenta was abit too overpowering with the amount of parmesan grated into it..

Desserts were luscious.. The chocolate nemesis was rich and indulging, panna cotta with raspberry and grappa were heavenly.. But the cream alongside was to sour that I think don’t really match…The lemon tart was abit too sour for me..

The River Café I think lives up to its reputation of using high quality ingredients and simple italian cooking.. But the only thing thats the problem is the price… The bill hit £260 for 4 without wine… Thats £65 per head.. But did it need to make the mains £35 and starters at £15 to £20? Having it once in a while should be okay I guess…

Expectations vs experience. The experience was very good. We sat outside on the terrace next to the river with the setting being both relaxed and elegant, situated next to the restaurant's garden. It's no mean feat keeping a restaurant relevant and pretty much fully booked for 36 years. It's still a chore finding a table and you have to take your hat off to Ruth Rogers for focusing and not expanding world-wide as many greedy business people do. The food was very well cooked and well thought through. I was not wowed as I am by some top restaurants and given the bill was £200 for two with 4 shared plates and 2 glasses of wine, I wouldn't jump to rebook again. Still with their waiting list, they won't miss me. If someone were to invite me, I would be happy to go back.

Excellent ambiance and location. A wonderful place to have lunch on the weekend and get totally ripped off with pretty good quality food. Mains at £50+ and appetizers at £30+ really stripped me of my appetite. But the service was excellent and it was a good experience!

Having read so much about the Chocolate Nemesis over the years, I made it my mission to try it on my birthday this year - and that's exactly what I did. I loved the decor and it felt instantly very singular compared of all the many restaurants I have dined at across the city - clean, fresh, fun but also reminiscent of a cool bar in a late 90s/early 00s rom com. The Turbot was perfection, it absolutely melted in my mouth. I love how generous the portions were compared to other fine dining restaurants. And, just as I hoped, the Chocolate Nemesis was everything I wanted it to be - light, delicate, rich and utterly unique. I washed it down with a fresh mint tea, which was the cherry on top of a fabulous evening.

One goes to the River Café, for extraordinary cooking and usually have to book months in advance for the privilege. But today (a beautiful September lunchtime) we just walked off the street and were able to experience all those rare authentic Ruth Rogers treats without the long wait. Remarkable as always.

Rating: ★★★★★ (5/5) I recently dined at River Café in London with a friend, and we were both incredibly impressed by the overall experience. The restaurant's atmosphere was warm and inviting, with tasteful decor and an elegant ambiance that set the stage for a memorable evening. We ordered two entrées: the veal and the longhorn steak. The longhorn steak was a standout dish, cooked to perfection and incredibly tender. The flavors were rich and well-balanced, leaving us thoroughly satisfied. The veal was also delicious, expertly prepared and presented, further showcasing the restaurant's commitment to quality ingredients and culinary skill. The drinks we ordered were equally impressive. The bartenders crafted our beverages with precision and care, resulting in perfectly balanced and refreshing concoctions that complemented our meal beautifully. Throughout the evening, the service was attentive and friendly, making us feel welcome and well taken care of. The staff were knowledgeable about the menu, and their recommendations only enhanced our dining experience. In summary, River Café in London is an exceptional dining destination that I would highly recommend to anyone seeking a refined and delicious meal. With its superb cuisine, expertly crafted drinks, and an atmosphere that exudes elegance, River Café is sure to provide a dining experience you won't forget.

Quite mixed reviews here especially if you read what others have to say. It is a great place for a special occasion and the food is good, but it is expensive and overpriced. I think it needs to balance itself out, but then the customers keep coming anyway and it’s a struggle to even get a table these days. Worth a try, and decide if you would come back - I would, but perhaps not as often.

The River cafe is rightly a British institution and a refreshing and alternative option to more "formal" Michelin experiences due to its more laid back character and setting. It is obviously expensive but I do not understand the negative reviews that are caused by that. The restaurant is not hiding away from the prices and the guests are aware of what they are getting into when they make the reservation. Personally I believe that the restaurant tries to provide a finer dining experience to people who are willing to spend significantly more than average but want to relax and enjoy the food. It is not pretentious at all and the staff is lovely. Would definitely recommend to anyone who is interested to experience it. My recommendation would be to try dishes you wouldn't necessarily have elsewhere in order to experience the full potential of the restaurant and get more "value" out of an expensive experience.
