I was born and raised in Camden. Castle's Pie and Mash was regular nosh for me and even though I've lived in Milton Keynes for the last 19 years, I always tank up at Castle's on my visits back to the manor....wouldn't have it any other way :)
Traditional british pie shop, the kind that are a mere memory to those of us that grew up in and around London. This doesnt look like much has changed in the past hundred years but when it comes to pies that is by all means a good thing. There is something special about a place like this, untouched. The pies themselves are crispy on top with the innards being tender soft and piping hot. Crack the crust steam comes pouring out, the secret ingredient? Nostalgia. Hopefully it is striving from being one of the remaining "proper" pie shops.
Wish this place all the try the pie or push the boat out and slurp some eels.
Love it, one of the only places left in London where you can get this delicacy, and it certainly is a delicacy. eel were delicious. the place is a no thrills old fashioned café, be surprised if it had changed since th 1890's really but that's another reason it's so amazing as London becomes increasingly commercialised and full of chains
The best pie n mash shop north side of the river. Pies are always tasty, full of flavour, but most of all, never have any gristle. The mash potato is always smooth with no lumps. Get down there today & have at least double pie n mash with liquor sauce, proper traditional old school food that will fill you up for the day. 5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
First experience with pie, mash, eel and liquor - interesting taste that is definitely worth a try if you're looking to sample traditional london food.
An absolute classic. The single most traditional British pie you’ll ever have and the most welcoming experience. Just extremely cosy, familiar, and a little time capsule. At the same time makes you forget you’re in the heart of modern London and on the other it’s inherently the most low-profile, comforting, working-class London bistro you could imagine. But most importantly. The pies are great. Ridiculously great. So simple, they couldn’t be any better. Super warm and casual staff makes everything even tastier! Could see myself moving to the neighbourhood just to eat there every two days. Just amazing.
🥔 A local told us that if we haven't tried pie and mash, we haven't been to London. That's why this little restaurant was the first stop on our culinary tour. Pie and mash is a combination of meat pie, mashed potatoes and parsley sauce. Portions at the Castle's are generous, but, coming from a country that uses a lot of spices, the taste felt a little bland. That's really a personal preference, as the queue at this place didn't stop for the full hour we spent there!
🍮 When it comes to desserts though, I was blown away. The treacle pudding with custard was steaming hot and made me feel warm and fuzzy inside on a windy day. And it's so sweet! I couldn't finish it (and I eat a lot of sweet stuff!).
🍽️ The place is small and cozy, five tables inside, two outside.
💷 Cash only
♿ There's a step at the entrance, but plenty of room for a wheelchair or stroller, inside and outside.
Great, filling comfort food. Shame they didn’t have eels when we went but just means we have to go again soon.
Ambiance is great and friendly, feels very homey.
Lovely pie and mash in an authentic restaurant serving the community since the 1930s.
Great Pie Mash & Liqueur good portion, good service.
Fantastic pie and mash shop. First time I ate pie and mash and stewed eels and I must say I enjoyed it. My partner has been here before so he knew already it's going to be a good choice. Friendly staff and fast service.
Popped into the shop yesterday (Saturday) to buy pie and mash for me and my son. I hadn't been here for some years because I'd had moved som year's ago. Pleasant friendly staff.
Sit down to a nice pie, mash potato and liquor starting from £5.10. Chilli vinigar avaliable too. Seems a family run business with simple decor. There are soft drinks and bottled water on sale. I did not see customer toilets so would not expect any. Seating is inside and two tables out front, street side but the street is not to busy. Walk along the near by canal to reach Camden Market.
Loved the old atmosphere here. The pie and mash dish is the one to get. For somewhere in the End of London, you get a lot for a small price. Definitely go to.
Wednesday 15/02/2023, After waiting 3 x years from Covid lockdown I finally went to Camden for a Pie & Mash lunch, delicious as always, I accidentally dropped a £20 note when taking out my phone to take this picture, only noticed an hour later, returned and asked if they had found it, Yes they said with a big smile and gave it back, my lucky day & would like to thank them for their honesty.
Pretty decent food. Pies are very good and mash was perfect. Very close to Manzes for flavour
Tradition London Pie and Mash shop. Friendly service and fantastic food. The way a pie and mash should be 😀
Last week I went to Castles and collected a large order for 24 pies and 12 liqueurs and the place is still the same as when I was growing up in London. The flavours and tastes are just so delicious and the staff there are very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this place to visit when in London 😁
Classsssic pie and mash shop! This place is FILLED with SOUL! First time going, the place was filled with regulars, some no doubt have probably been going there for years and years. Friendly and welcoming service, customers were all having a chit chat with the hostess from their tables, some customers greeted each other as they walked in - this is an institution for the neighborhood! Interior is so classic. You can't beat the price for a lovely filling meal, especially nowadays. Thank you Castle's.
Best pie&mash ever had! Creamy, hot and fresh
Great atmosphere, friendly stuff and even got a compliment.
Amazing visit, keep up ☺️
Best pie and mash spot in london will always recommend so many years strong ❤️
