Friendly welcome, very good service and the food is incredible. We got the vegan fish, vegan fish cakes, vegan scampi and vegan battered sausage all with chips for 4 of us to share. The portions are huge and the flavour is delicious. So lovely to finally be able to eat something that has the flavour and texture of fish after being a vegetarian for 30 years! Looking forward to going again.

Probably the best fish and chips in London! Chefs are friendly and waiting staff treat you like members of the family! You will be looked after 👍🏼

Had oysters with guinness, special deal £12 I think. Very nice, as were the whitebait - though a bit over-battered. Cod burger was very big and greasy, but that was exactly what I needed at the time. Very friendly waiting staff - Food okay - don't ask for bread though, you'll get cheap white sliced with marge!
You do tend to get tramps begging for food and money if you sit outside, you'd think the management would put a stop to this - like they would in any other country in the world!

Finding a half decent chippy in London can be hard. Add in wanting a reasonable price and your options drop down considerably. I don't know about you but a kebab shop claiming to serve 'traditionally fish and chips' really isn't for me. Luckily I stumbled upon the delightful Sutton & Sons whilst researching London's next places to eat.

Using fresh fish from their family fishmongers across the road, Sutton & Sons serves up genuinely traditional fish and chips at a great price - well worth the walk to Stoke Newington.

Where:

Sutton & Sons, Stoke Newington

When:

Saturday afternoon

What we ate:

Monkfish and chips, Scampi and chips, Calamari rings, Bread and butter

Highlights:

Service is incredibly friendly and welcoming

The restaurants interior is well consider with nautical references wooden tables, copper pipes an a large fresh fish counter

Batter is light and super crispy on both the monkfish and scampi

Monkfish is soft yet meaty and I like that it has been cut into manageable chunks

The scampi were salty and sweet with a perfect breaded coating

The chips were LUSH! Proper chip shop chips; thick and chunky with plenty of salt and vinegar, plus a few cheeky crispy ones chucked in for good measure
The calamari was well cooked and not at all chewy

Prosecco is served in individual bottles which is quite fun, with a brilliant sparkle and fresh flavour

Lowlights:

Unsure the salad was needed on all the plates

Our starters were initially forgotten then arrived half way through our mains

Service was a little bit slow at times

Overall:

I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Sutton & Sons. As I said above, finding a good chippy in London can be hard but Sutton & Sons certainly fits the bill. Please do go visit!

Love to come here and sit at one of the tables outside to watch the world of Stoke Newington go by in the summer. They do an excellent deal of six oysters and a glass of process for £10.00, the oysters have always been fresh and delicious. I have to confess I haven't tried the fish and chips yet but will definitely be visiting again soon to fix that.

Serving the widest choice of fish in North East London, Sutton and Sons is located on the high street that joins Dalston Junction and Stoke Newington stations together. Seafood is sourced daily, fresh from the Sutton and Sons’ Fishmongers, their main seafood supplier. An established and reputable entity in its own right, with its roots stemming back to 1998, serving schools and its local community.

This is my first time trying samphire, it is a european plant of the parsley family, grown on rocks and cliffs by the sea, or as Chris explains it – its usually found in swamps or marshland. There is no need to add salt to these as its salty aroma stems naturally from its growth in these areas. I think I may have found vegetables I finally like…

Really large portions at Sutton and Sons, so you would really get your money’s worth. I had the tuna burger, you’re given a thick slab of tuna sandwiched by soft buns and a bowl full of fries.

History and Background: A food bloggers lunch courtesy Suttons and Sons ...Seafood is sourced daily, fresh from the Sutton and Sons’ Fishmongers, their main seafood supplier...I have to admit I don’t know much about seafood, so it was great to have Adam and Chris explain how particular foods are sourced and the reason behind particular flavours/ seasonings.

That Fish Supper !!. That fish supper was delicious !!
With a wedge of lemon to start it off...
The batter was crisp to the bite and the cod was perfectly cooked !! The chips were Moorish and great, you could tell they were healthily cooked !!
A newbie to the Stokey area - but a friend recommended Sutton and Sons...
Really glad I went there.
A great Saturday night take away !!

Laura. I eat here every few weeks, I love their grilled fish, especially the seabass and a glass of Borough wine! It has a good atmosphere, it's not too hipster/trendy, and there are plenty of London locals I've seen there too.

If Carlsberg did Fish & Chips.... In a hurried rush before a pub quiz at the Tufnell Park tavern a few Monday's ago, I had a hankering for Fish & Chips.

This was the nearest place to my North London home of any renown, so sat nav plugged in I weaved through the early evening traffic to pick up some takeaway.

Disappointingly they had run out of my prefered (and most sustainable) fish of choice, the pollock due to a 'busy weekend'. I ended up getting cod fillet, chips and mushy peas. 15 minutes later I was devouring it before rushing off to the quiz.

You might think this hurried eating would have numbed me to the calibre of the food. Quite the opposite. Both fish and chips were excellent. Mushy peas also noteworthy.

It's not cheap; but this type of meal in London seldom is. You won't get a great deal of change from £10. Worth it and more though.

I don't understand Sutton and Sons. I'm confused. One day I get sublime fish and chips and another time it's just average and a tad greasy. It's the same cooks, same great fish from their fishmongers across the road. So I really don't know why some days it's much better than others. Why are you so inconsistent. Why? Tell me!!!!!!!! I have figured out that the best time to eat there though, are either Friday night or anytime on Saturday when they are ay their most busy and the food is being turned around pretty quickly. On a wet windy Wednesday night, the fish seems to be left hanging around for a while waiting for someone to eat them. It's then that the fish is not up to its best. But I just want to focus on the positive, the way that the batter is so crispy and the fish inside is so moist and when your fork cuts through it flakes apart. The portion sizes are nice and generous, just as I like them to be. The one thing I hate about fish n ch

This place is so much more than a chippie. They have a full menu that includes grilled fish and oysters and salads. But the fish and chips are exceptional. Fish is moist and flakey and batter is thin and crisp. No sogginess here. And I love their onion vinegar. Can also get a nice bottle of wine. Prices are reasonable too.

Had the cod and chips. Really nice chips. Some of the best I've had. Thick and soft in the middle with a good crunchy bite on the outside. Excellent! The fish was also really nicely cooked, beautiful crust and hot and juicy in the inside. The only downside to the wonderfully cooked fish was that it didn't quite taste of anything. No spices, vinger, salt, etc. It's as though they've perfected the cooking but decided to remain noncommittal as to what it should taste like. They provide condiments for self assembly, but I was a bit disappointed by it.

Crossed the oceans to try the famous Vegan Fish & Chips with banana blossom here. What can I say? It was worth it, without a doubt: delicious food, prepared and served by the funniest/coolest guys, listening to the best 80s songs - "Feels like heaven" on the speakers while I was leaving the place wrapped it up and pretty much described the whole experience. 😎 Highly recommended.

Tried the cod burger at Sutton's and sons in Stokey and it was delicious. Filled with tomato, onions, lettuce, gherkin and a fish sauce. One of the finest fish and chips outlets in London. Prices are reasonable at around £30 for 2 with soft drinks. Also serves alcohol.

I had the grilled mackerel. I have to confess, it was so tasty that I devoured the fish skeleton. Chips were great too. I do wish the salad could have a bit of dressing though as it seemed a bit flat and flavourless against such awesome flavoured fish and perfectly fried chips. Biggest let down, sadly is that there was a stale urinal smell permeating through the restaurant from the toilet.

Wow, the fish here is top quality, the servers are amazing, and atmosphere is welcoming and quiet. We ordered the grilled salmon with chips and a gherkin pickle, the server was eager to answer any question’s we had, and brought our food and drinks extremely quickly, the only thing they forgot was the pickle, but the made up by giving it to us for free! The salmon was top notch, and melted in our mouths, the chips were also incredibly fluffy and delicious, and the salad was also balanced well with different fresh ingredients. The establishment was not that busy and we sat outside, (they have outside heaters) it had nice music and it was very clean. Although the servers did not wear masks, they do offer sanitising gel at entry. Overall this place is a wonderful spot to have lunch or dinner! Definitely recommended. The prices are also reasonable and the staff are flexible! Will be coming back very soon!

I went here for the oysters and ended up ordering a couple of other items. I wasn’t disappointed. Everything I ordered was cooked so well. The oysters were so fresh and presented well. Had a nice Prosecco to go with them. The white bait was nice and crispy.(great finger food with beer) The batter on the calamari was so light and crunchy without being oily. The mussels were so juicy and succulent. And the grilled sea bass was so perfectly grilled and seasoned just the right amount so that you can taste and appreciate the full flavour of the delicate fish. I can’t wait to go( edit - I will ) go there again to try the lobster and scallops and maybe the other sides.

Most amazing fish and chips I had in years. We had crab toast for starter and it was really tasty and made with fresh crab meat. Then, we shared vegan ‘fish’ and chips. It was good and tasted like artichoke. The regular cod fish and chips was absolutely delicious, fresh and the batter was perfect and light. And best of all, everything is good value and the staff is super friendly.
