We have visited St. John’s three times now, never been disappointed. The food has always been delicious. And will definitely go again. If I had to say anything negative then the service can be a little slow but the friendly staff the food and extremely reasonable prices more than makes up for it. We can highly recommend this place.
I've been coming here on & off for almost 20 years. Not a regular by any means, perhaps once or twice every year or so. We used to live near here pre-kids. Anyway, after some deliberation we thought we'd come for a meal on the evening of my 48th birthday this weekend and i'm very glad we did. The quality of the food was excellent. The grilled squid & chrorizo starter I had was amazing and up there with the best squid i've ever eaten. I had wanted to find out from the chef how he cooked it, but the kids were 'too embarassed. Meh!.
Next up was the Venison. Amazing, melt in your mouth tender. The rest of the family were equally happy with their food.
The place has a very relaxed, warm & welcoming atmosphere. Not pretentious in any way and the waiting staff are all friendly and attentive.
I'm looking forward to my next visit, whenever that may be.
A fabulous gem of a gastro pub situated in up and coming fun spot Archway. Had dinner here with a large group of friends. Stylish imaginative restaurant quality food, delicious wines but the service is what makes this place special. The staff go above and beyond to accommodate. Loved it
I have been lots of times now, excellent customer service and exceptional food with a great range of wine, I highly recommend it!
Simply... The best gastropub in the area, if not north of the river.
The higher end of gastropubs. This is definitely on the higher end of gastropubs - price-wise but also with the originality of the menu e.g. Jellied Pig's Head as a starter - YUM! Most certainly a destination restaurant for a special occasion without pretensions.
Wonderful ambience - good food and service. What's not to like?
Nursing a hangover a few Saturdays ago, my housemates and I dragged ourselves to St John’s Tavern hoping they would have bloody marys. Luckily they did, and luckily they are amazing (and a bargain at £4.75). Perfect proportions of tabasco, black pepper, good tomato juice, good vodka and whatever other magical ingredients there are in there. Also +10 points for the celery stick; making an alcoholic drink into a substantial meal. A friend said an oyster dropped into a bloody mary is delicious, so I naively ordered an oyster (£2.50) and dunked it in. What a waste. It adds no particular flavour to the drink which doesn’t need any saltiness, and wastes a tasty oyster. While we’re on the topic, I really don’t understand why people, and etiquette, insist on not chewing oysters.
This weekend I started my exploration of North London early and went for a quick bite to eat at St Johns Tavern in Archway. My landlord-to-be had told me how wonderful it was and, as I was in the area, it seemed rude not to pop in. It was a really lovely pub, exactly the short of place that I would want as my local. The bar area was traditional but with a modern touch. There was a nice atmosphere, with people chatting on bar stools and playing boggle at their tables. Most importantly there was a good selection of reasonably priced drinks on offer.
Ever since Al & Louise moved to Archway and Gerry & Ben moved to Holloway, I've been expanding my geographic horizons. I've been getting to know the London bus system better, assisting me in my "Year of the Bus" campaign. (At 90p, how can you not take the
Amazing food this place is perfect for any foodie!!
The prices may make some shy away but you really get what you are paying for...luxury food in a gastro pub.
I came here with a group of four and we had a booth table in the back which felt private even if you were next to another booth.
The service was great they always seemed to be there when you needed them, with out being overbearing.
The setting of the tavern is sophisticated and yet has that understated pub feel to it, you can sit out the front and just have gastro pub grub or go into the back dining room which is adorned with the multiple blackboards with the menus and specials.
We started our meal with the idea of trying things we had never had so we had black caviar to start, obviously with nothing to compare it to I can only say that it was delicious, not too fishy and perfect with the accompanying sauce.
For my main I had the polenta and goats cheese which was amazing! I will admit I have had polenta many times before and this paired with the goats cheese was perfect!
The waitress we had was very knowledgeable when it came to the wines and brought a perfect paired wine to the meal.
Sadly by the end we were too full to even look at the dessert menu but everything on it sounded amazing!
What I will say is you do walk out feeling perfectly full and not craving something to eat when you get home which is always a plus.
This tavern is a perfect place for any foodie and you won't regret it at all!
Great pub and seriously good restaurant dining room at the rear. Varied menu both meat and fish but also standard favourites. Nice booth seating for larger group. Extensive wine list and fine art decoration in the dining area. Good range of beers in very busy bar. Looks better outside since fairly recent decoration. Good local night out!
St John's tavern is a great place for an evening catch-up with friends and a meal over the weekend. It offers a plenty of choice among the pub food classics. The restaurant is divided into two part, pub/bar and restaurant area. I definitely recommend the first one, the scary paintings in the restaurant area do not go well with food. Some of the dishes may be a little bit too pricey for pub food.
Delicious dinner yesterday in the renovated gastro pub. Service was superb & food delicious. I’ve been dining here for decades & it’s finally back to its best. Marco was especially friendly & charming!
I've eaten here many times over several years - both lunches and dinners - and I think that the current average rating (4.4) is on the low side.
The menu changes frequently and is unusually ambitious for a pub. Fortunately, it delivers on the promises made and the food is high-quality, skillfully cooked and generously portioned.
The dining room has very high ceilings, giving a welcoming feeling of space. Although the kitchen is semi-open, the extraction system means that cooking smells stay away from the diners. The service is very good. The art on the walls is something of an acquired taste.
The only points of improvement I can think of are that the smell of cigarettes can waft inside when people go into the covered patio to smoke and the toilets could do with a little tlc.
Great cozy atmosphere for a cold Sunday. Very friendly and helpful service. And the best Sunday Roast I have encountered in London!!! Nice thick gravy, crispy and fluffy roasties and a good portion of perfectly cooked beef. Will definitely be back even though its a 1h commute from South London. So worth it for the food and staff 👌🏼
I photographed a winter wedding reception at St John's Tavern in 2022 and I loved it! A gorgeous, intimate venue with a fantastic space for a dancefloor. The food was beautiful and the staff were very accommodating. A lovely place for some great spaces for portraits too!

5 star all round, exceptional food - literally the best roast I've ever had in London and I've lived here 6 years, service was incredible and the place is gorgeous. I recommend you go and experience this 100% also there weekly food menu looked next level so if you're looking to visit in general - definitely go!
Amazing classy art deco interior decoration. Very friendly and attentive waiting staff. Food? Delicious, quickly served and presented in very appealing manner. I had Venison stew and apple crumble and custard. Absolutely delicious. Good quality Guiness on tap (huge plus) and a huge variety of beers and and even greater selection of wines.
Definitely recommend, 10/10. With pleasure I will visit again.
Amazing menu (both food and drink) and really friendly staff. Love the art wall and jazzy tunes for a Sunday.
The place is really cool. Decent drinks and a laid back atmosphere, which lets u relax after an exhausting week. Food is very well done and fills u up, so u won’t leave the place hungry. Folks u come here are very friendly and open minded. Beer prices are decent and u have a good selection you can choose from. All in all one of the best pubs in the area.
Staying at the Premier Inn in Archway, we decided to look for a local pub and thankfully we found the St John's Tavern. A truly great pub with a buzzing, laid back dining hall. Superb food, endless variety of drinks, great staff and a roaring log fire - what more could you wish for on a cold winter's night?
Really tasty Sunday roast (beef) but it did take ages till it was served and it came with a risible amount of roast tatties. When I asked for more for the three of us who'd ordered that dish, the waiter's lengthy negotiations with the chef resulted in an extra 3 potatoes....for all three of us to share. Pretty poor service/attitude from the chef at the price.
Overall I must say everything was really, really tasty.
