Really delicious freshly cooked food and the chef was very accomodating of my vegan diet and happily cooked a fresh non-spicy and dairy free lentil dahl to my liking without too much of a wait! Staff were very polite and there is fresh water on the table. Hope to come back again!

Morning breakfast for a changed. Courtesy and delightful staffs. Food was lovely. Samosa pasty base was undercooked because was too thicked. Ordered a plain soft and a crispy dosai serves with sambal and dhal because I won't eat other sweet dipping. Overall was lovely.

Wanted to visit Lahore but, as it was full and had a queue waiting to get in, my friends and I had to resort to Dosa N Chutny. The food was OK, but, I have had better food in Sri Lanka for prices less than this. Not a place to visit specifically for this, but, if you don't have any other choice, then definitely a place to drop in.

Great food at reasonable price.
We went there on a Saturday night and it was crowded . We were on wait for about ten minutes to get a seat. It was worth the wait. We ordered an egg kothu, dosa and fried rice . All of it were good and a very quantity too. If you are out there looking for great South Indian food - you should definitely give it a try.

Our latest venue is Dosa N Chutney. Expectations were high. Many a tasty curry has been had at this establishment over my tenure in Tooting. Ideally located just across the road from Tooting Broadway it's a popular establishment, demonstrated by a number of fellow patrons on this chilly Tuesday evening.

The venue itself isn't the largest. But it does an impressive job deceiving you otherwise with it's mirrored walls effectively giving the illusion of an infinite curry palace. The rest of the decor is relatively basic but the lively hum from the other restaurant go-ers gives a pleasant atmosphere. Certainly could do better but the CURRYBONDers decide on a descent venue score of 6.9/10.

As we take our seats we line up the Cobra's, unfortunately no BYOB at Dosa N Chutney but the Cobra pint glasses make a nice change to the rows of bottles. Popadoms are ordered, and Jobbers, now chief popadom assessor duly approved even suggesting these were the best 'doms yet. However, as a South Indian curry house, mango chutney was not provided but rather some nicely spicy chutney alternatives.

As the name suggests, this place does dosas. Not just any dosas, these beasts are giant crispy Indian pancakes with a myriad of fillings, toppings and all served with chutneys, samba and daal. The CURRYBONDers make the most of what's on offer with a host of dosas to start, Mysore Masala Dosa, Masala Dosa and Mutton Masala Dosa. They are delicious.

Unfortunately our efforts to fairly assess each and every curry restaurant with reference dishes of Onion Bhaji and Chicken Tikka Masala meets its first issue...no bhajis. We plump for the closest substitute, onion pakoras. Whilst being crunchy and well spiced they do have a bit of the "just left on the side" feel to them. Resulting in a "bhaji" score of 4/10.

Dosas down, bring on the curry. Which in this menu is called gravy. The menu itself has an excellent variety, in particular, like its other South Indian counterparts, an excellent selection of vegetarian dishes. With so many CURRYBONDers this was a superb opportunity to sample this selection. The curry spread was, Aloo Gobi Masala, Hyderabad Bhuna Ghost, Chettinadu Chicken and Lamb, Mixed Kothu and thankfully Chicken Tikka Masala.

The curry...is....fantastic! Each curry has a depth of spice that smacks your tastebuds in the face then slowly caresses them as the flavour develops. The CTM is rich, creamy and moorish, my veggie Aloo Gobi is fragrant and warming, the Chettinadu is a thinner sauce but fiery and meaty with hunky lamb on the bone and the Kothu looks terrifying, like the scrapings of an omelette gone wrong. However, it has a common characteristic with all of its curry buddies, it's delicious!
The level of heat is variable but this is curry for grown ups. The heat isn't overwhelming, it's necessary. The accompaniments are good but don't necessarily meet the heights of the curry. Overall this is the best curry of CURRYBOND to date, it is duly rewarded with a food score of 8.8/10.

The CURRYBONDers slump back in their seats to survey the remains of the curry conquest before them, the portions were good the leftovers are inevitable the bill comes to £133.90 that's £16.74/CURRYBONDer. This all adds up to a value score of 7.2/10.

With this many CURRYBONDers the inevitable latecomers make their appearance once the beads of sweat are already trickling and belts have been loosened. So we have our first CURRYBOND takeaway, a trend that will surely pick up once we arrive at some of the smaller venues.

So with the scores in, smiles on faces, we take the official CURRYBOND photo and tot up the scores. Dosa N Chutney gets

An approved CURRYBOND rating of 8.2/10.

Dosa B Chuny is a little gem in the Tooting area. I would recommend their samosas any day. Good service and easy to find from the Tooting Broadway station.

I haven't been recently , but Dosa and Chutny has always been a great informal drop in if you want cafe-style Indian food at great prices. Tandoori meats are usually £5 or less, which I always go for, curries are anything up to £7 and the dosa's are the real star of the show, ranging from about £2 to £4 for the filled , more exotic ones. I actually often go for the thick dosa with condiments ; it's really moorish and more filling than the thin versions. One thing I don't like is the vegetable curry though, which is quite bland comes in a very gloopy and thickened sauce which always seems a bit artificial to me! Avoid that dish

Great cheap n cheerful curry in Tooting. Uninspiring 'cafe' type interior and ambiance and at times neglectful service, but a wide selection of interesting South Indian dishes, which were extremely favoursome and clearly prepared to order with fresh spices. Recommended if you are a curry hound.

Best place in Tooting for cheap eating. I am a regular diner at Dosa & Chutney. I have been going here for the last 2 years when a friend recommended it to me. The staff are extremely welcoming and helpful and will recommend items from the menu if your unsure what to order. The dosa's are beautiful and so are the special lunch menus. I also like the fact you can get freshly squeezed juices and lassi's which are just delicious. You need not spend a huge amount and to be honest it would be quite difficult. Food ranges from £3.50 for a dosa to £6.00 for a biryani. You have got to go and find out for yourself and discover Tooting's hidden gem.

About a month ago, I met Slow Food Kitchen , sloLondon and Table for One in Tooting to explore the neighbourhood. Little did I know that what was going to be a stroll and then lunch in a Sri Lankan restaurant was going to turn into a full blown food crawl. Stomachs, on your marks, get set…. go. With empty stomachs at 1pm and late arrivals, we early birds stared longingly at the Dosa n Chutny across from Tooting Broadway tube station. I’d heard very good things about the place from at least 3 other people and a decision was made to have “breakfast” there when everyone arrived. It would be light, really. First to arrive were Idly (2 pieces for £1.60), fluffy steamed rice and lentil pillows served with a couple of wonderfully spicy chutnys and a mild soothing sambar. Two dosas were ordered too – we’d heard that this place sold the best dosas in London. I have no idea if that’s true but they were indeed excellent, all thin and crispy. A Mutton Masala Dosa (£4.50) was filled with a mixture

After hearing so many good things- we finally  tried out a dosa, some chutney, and couple of extras. Since we're in the neighbourhood, we decided to takeaway instead of endure the stark cafeteria-like dining room; on a busy Saturday night, it was pretty efficient, we got our order within 30 minutes.

We started with a mysore masala dosa, a dosa filled with sweet potato and onions. I think the 'mysore' part of it was supposed to make it spicy, but there was hardly any heat- which was absolutely fine considering the rest of our meal was had enough spiciness. The dosa might have suffered slightly from being tightly wrapped in foil as it lost it's crispness and was instead a little chewy. However all the accompanying chutneys were wonderfully flavoursome.

At the moment of ordering we had a flashback to the great lamb chops from Tayyabs and decided to put chilli lamb chops on the list. We shouldn't have bothered- they were a little too carcinogenic for my liking and rather tough.

For the main event we had a hyderabad bhuna ghost- thick and unctious, slightly sweet gravy with decent pieces of lamb throughout, and the chettinadu chicken curry- pieces of chicken falling off the bone and swimming in a fiery gravy.

The portions were generous, even for two very hungry gluttons who hadn't eaten lunch, there were leftovers for Sunday lunch, and all cost under a cheery £25! We're not big fans of this cuisine but since being in Tooting, we've embraced it and will happily order from Dosa N Chutny again next takeaway night!

Ps- I didn't bother taking photos because well, curry in a plastic box never looks photogenic!

H and I are exploring Tooting tonight. It keeps popping up in every other Time Out as 'the new Shoreditch'; based on a daytime reccy this is true in the sense that there's enough pound shops fit for a (benefits) queen and on average 2-3 fried chicken shops within arm's length (see also: Peckham.) But wait until nighttime and the place comes alive with shabby chic gastropubs, cosy cocktail bars and some of the best Indian restaurants in London.

'Restaurant' would be a stretch in this instance. Dosa N Chutny is the South Indian equivalent of a greasy spoon caff, plastic-covered metal tables and chairs welded to the floor lest someone fancies causing a ruckus. It's functional and nothing more - don't book your anniversary dinner here unless you're a fan of imposed, indefinite celibacy.

Not that that should matter with food as good as this. You can always find another half. We ignored the waiter's comments that we'd ordered too much (a naive statement given the diners) and proceeded to plow our way through five semi-randomly selected dishes. Without putting too fine a point on it, the chilli paneer could be one of the best Indian dishes ever to pass through me (sorry.) Succulent yet firm in texture, perfectly seasoned and packing a punch as fiery as an uppercut from Ken in Super Street Fighter II , this is tofu with balls. Supreme.

Our chilli (or 'chilly') lamb chops could have had a smidge more meat on the bone but they tasted just as bomb-diggidy, full of heat and freshly charred from the tandoori oven.

As with all good dosa selections, we went for the one with the nicest sounding name. The Mysore masala was a good place to start for us dosa virgins; the rice & lentil pancake was beautifully crispy, ready to be teared and spicy potato scooped into it. I particularly loved the hospital-food metal plates - this isn't an East London hipster take on post-modern dining (kidney-dish chic?) There's a meal to be served with a few dips and 'oh here look this'll do.'

The Ghosht saagwala was a cut above your average Brick Lane slop. Tender lamb peeping out from a spinach and garlic gravy, it may have looked like snot but the flavours were fantastic. Far from bland as many spinach dishes end up being, I'd rate this amongst the top curries I've eaten in our fair capital.

Less impressive was the Chettinadu fish curry - it's a shame given its traditional South Indian credentials that the kitchen didn't do it justice. The fish didn't taste overly fresh, its bones sticking in the throat after many spoonfuls. You couldn't knock mopping the tangy sauce up with bits of peshwari naan though.

Throw in a couple of Kingfishers and it's still only £20 each. TWENTY POUNDS. That sh*t cray, I hear you say - and you would be correct. Dosa N Chutny is cheap, cheerful and a cut above the competition; it may be a no frills joint to look at but the food more than compensates. Bellies full, it's on to The Little Bar for a damn fine negroni, dirty martini - and a seat. You don't get that many places on a Saturday night. Viva Tooting!

21 August 2012 - Dosa n Chutny: Minus the chutney

With a heavy heart and a tear in my eye (caused by the dust from cleaning the skeletons out of the cupboard in my old house), I left Tooting for pastures new (Clapham South). However, you know what they say, you can take the boy out of Tooting, but you can't take Tooting out of the boy, and, with this mantra on my lips and a spring in my step I was soon on my southbound way back to the curry capital of Europe.

Temporarily homeless, I had been residing on the sofa bed of my good friend Max. As a sign of my gratitude (not to be confused as a token rent payment, or any other payment for that matter), I thanked Max in the only way I knew how, by taking him for a curry and giving him a mention in a highly esteemed and extremely popular blog. Tom did not benefit from this act of kindness and was forced to stump up his share.

Tom joined us (late...again), ready to get his lassi on. We decided to take a fresh approach to finding our hosts for the evening, and let the scent of curry lead us on. We ended up outside the unassumingly tangerine frontage of Dosa n Chutney. The place was bouncing so we went inside and waited to be seated...and waited some more...until we just decided to sit ourselves down. Ten minutes later we got some menus and so began a magical journey of spice enthused pleasure.

VENUE

Dosa n Chutney's orange framed exterior was reflected internally by the mirrored walls. LED lighting and garish furniture is seemingly the order of the day south of the Broadway crossroads and DnC didn't disappoint. Though a little packed in, it was lively and the mirrors gave the illusion of space as well as the illusion of friendship for Tom on his lonely side of the table. Adding to the colour was the presence of a TV transmitting infectious Bollywood cheer and, with a bus stop directly outside, convenience is also on the menu. All in all, a simple, but charming setting for what would prove to be a delightful meal. 7/10

STARTERS AND SIDES

3 Poppadom
Vegetable Kothu
Vegetable Biryani
2 x Veechu parotha
Peshwari Naan
3 Mango Lassi

Poppadoms always taste the same, right? WRONG. These were probably the best poppadoms we've sampled so far, oily fresh and crisp.

You should have seen the look of horror on Mr Scrimgour's face when they said they had no mango chutney - it was like he'd just been told Middlesbrough Supporters South had folded. However, the shock was quickly eased by an alternative and original green dip that tickled the taste buds and amply substituted for the mango, which led us to assume this was the famous 'n' chutney the restaurant was named after.

The breads were fluffy, fresh and moist, like a...maybe I'll skip the simile this time. However, the peshwari was not quite as sweet as at other locations, largely due to the minimal coconut filling, but what it lacked was made up by the kothu and biryani. Both of the vegetable variety, they were an improvement on Apollo Banana Leaf's efforts which were dry in comparison. They also had a bit of heat which amplified the range of textures and flavours on offer from the veg, rice and kothu. Near flawless, and sizeably portioned, these were great sides and were washed lovingly down by the thick and creamy lassi, which did come with mango. 9/10

CURRY

Hyderabad Bhuna Ghost
Chettinadu Fish (Anchovy) Curry
Chicken Mughlai Kebab

The curries continued where the starters and sides left off.

In honour of our outsourced IT technical support colleagues in India, we had to try the Hyderabad Bhuna Ghost - tender pieces of boneless lamb cooked with ginger, garlic, coriander and whole red chillies-Hydrabadi style. A great dish, with a lovely kick from the chillies, this comes highly recommended. Similarly, the Chettinadu Fish Curry (a house special) was a sublime blend of flavours that was complimentary to the lamb, despite containing anchovies as a substitute for the usual king fish. The Chicken Mughlai Kebab enhanced the meal further, but the tender tandoori chicken was not as impressive as the other two dishes. 8/10

STAFF

As mentioned already we weren't exactly welcomed with open arms, and the staff weren't particularly attentive throughout the evening. The waiter also started reading our order back to us, despite him having read it off a list on my phone in the first place - so not the sharpest chilli in the curry. Nevertheless no other real incidents or complaints, but numbers were lower than further on up the road so top marks can't be given. 6/10

VALUE FOR MONEY

The whole meal came to about £38 for three, so certainly not the cheapest, but not too expensive either. We were also so impressed with the food and feeling strangely flush that we ended up giving an additional £7 tip. So, never let it be said that the TCB are not generous - not only are we providing top notch journalism for free, but contributing greatly to the local economy as well. 8/10

SUMMARY

Fantastic food in a lively setting that scores highly. It was also refreshing to receive a 'full throttle' curry as opposed to the 'curry for the pasty white guys' which we so often receive. The evidence is clearly captured here, en-brow (although it is unclear whether this was induced by the curry or impending homelessness) >>>

Missing out on top marks due to the staff, Dosa n Chutney comes in at a lofty second place so far, just behind Spice Village. Richly deserved for the food, it's a total of 38/50.

Scraped four stars because the food was good and reasonably priced. Here's what I liked: • Clean • Good sized menu • Tasty food (although lacked salt) • Good value • Good spacing between tables What I didn't like: • Slow service • Being forced to order starters and mains at the same time despite the restaurant not being busy at all (Monday evening) • Very bright lights so not a relaxing dining experience Do I recommend going? YES Will I go again? YES Was it good value? YES Price point: $

Excellent experience! Service was wonderful! The servers stood in the room and watched for anyone who needed assistance. Janki was really pleasant and attentive! Some food dishes stood out more than others. I was on a lamb mission since it is not readily available in my region - so I guess I ordered all lamb dishes. Lamb samosas okay, tandoori lamb was okay (maybe a little tougher than I would have liked)….but the highlight was the chettinad lamb curry! I could have bathed in that gravy (sauce)! Garlic naan was also amazing!

We haven't been to this place for a few years but decided to go while we were in the area. We had the vegetable samosas to start, which were quite tasty but a bit small. Then we had the dosas, one masala, and one chicken. They were both as delicious as we remembered. The chutneys they served with them were OK, one coconut and one tomato were OK, but the others weren't that special. The service was great, both waitresses were really helpful. Overall, I'd recommend this place if you are in Tooting.

Came here with 2 friends and we shared the aubergine curry, a dosa each, the lentil donuts and gobi 65. The aubergine curry was standout tasty and was great to try. I came here for the dosa and this evening wasn't as crispy as they can be but super tasty. The price for a dosa and chutney is amazing value for quantity and quality of food. For £15 each (including a soft drink) it was a steal for the quality of food. This place does get busy and was full by 7:30pm

Beautiful ambience, great service. We had dinner tonight there. We are vegetarian, had lots of dishes and each dish was good. Our kids loved Manchurian, mysore masala dosa, samosa, mango lassi, sweet lassi. Staff was very good. One big disappointment : they ran out of hot beverages, no masala tea or coffee. We went there around 7:30pm.. so not very late, evening just started as it is weekend; they should make sure that that there would be enough tea/coffee for customers.

Great restaurant to dine in if you are after authentic South Indian food. Good ambience and good reception by the front end team. Only thing that could have been better is the spacing between the seats that were bit cramped. Would have been great if that can be taken care. Also do make sure reserve a table as we went without it but the team were kind enough to accommodated us.

Found this place on Google. I have walked past it a number of times but never walked in. We walked in Saturday evening and the smell was amazing. The lovely Mitali assisted us and gave my party and I recommendations (such as the masala dosa, paneer masala dosa, the lamb curry and the chicken biryani). We ordered the above (for our party of three) and all of them were amazing (very flavorful, spice level perfect and the portion sizes great). Would definitely recommend the lamb curry. We will be back for sure. I also recommend making a booking as it is quite busy. Wish I had taken more pictures. Thank you!

Loved the Food! Would recommend the Mysore masala dosa, and all the Chicken and Rice dishes. The service was fantastic, the waitresses were very helpful, especially, Rajeshri (waitress) who was our main servicewoman was very friendly to us. The atmosphere was also wonderful. The criticism we had is some of the dishes were expensive, for example, Naans were £3-£4 per serving.
