I decided to try out Coach and Horses with my friend who's vegan, after struggling to find anywhere that fell into two conditions 1) they had to serve vegan food and 2) they had to be open. First off let's just say the food is a 4.5, it is some of the best vegetarian and vegan food I have had in London, and the fact their menu has extensive vegan options is a definite plus. We went for the pesto vegan burger with onion rings, which was the best veggie burger I've ever eaten out and about, and the vedgeree, which is kedgeree minus the fish with lots of other veggies thrown in (think cauliflower and edamame beans). We also went for two vegan desserts, the coconut panna cotta with poached rhubarb and a brandy snap was delicious, but slightly overshadowed by the mouth sensation that was lemon and basil ice cream. It was some of the best ice cream I've had this Summer and it was vegan...no words. We sat downstairs in the pub area, which was very casual but I like eating that way. The atmosphere was your typical boozers except there were no greasy steak sandwiches flying round. The problem I had was the mixed service. The end of our meal was fine but two of the barmaids who first served us were very inexperienced. One of which proceeded to tell my friend the reason why our cokes were mostly water was because we asked for ice, it had melted so the barmaid poured it into our glasses then gave it a top of coke. She got very heated when we asked her to change it, and it took another barmaid to step in and tell her off to sort the problem. Another didn't know what the symbols on the menu meant, and every time we asked if something was vegan they had to go check. As I said we sat in the bar so upstairs in the dining room the service was probably a lot better. I'd definitely go back again for a pub lunch. Plus they let dogs in so it's probably the best pub in London.

Great vegetarian food, value and service. I have been vegan for some time but I hadn't been aware of this vegetarian pub. It's exciting to be invited to pass behind the busy bar, up some steps and find yourself in a lovely high-ceilinged room festooned with pictures of Private Eye journalists and welcomed by smiling waiters in aprons. Teashop by day, restaurant by night, there's a relaxed, convivial ambience and a mixed clientele. There was a candle and a nice little vase of flowers on the table.

My other half – not vegan – started with a raw lasagne with wafer thin beetroot which was very nicely flavoured – he said it compared very well to similar non-vegan dishes. His main course was a falafel burger which he said showed the posh burger joints which serve up portobello mushrooms and call them ‘burgers’ how it should really be done.

I didn't have a starter but I jumped on the tofush and chips as a main. As a vegan I hardly have battered anything, let alone anything like fish. This was a crispy package of tofu wrapped in a thin, gently aromatic seaweed, and I absolutely loved it. There was a big wedge of lemon to squeeze over the peas and chips, and best of all was the sauce, delicate creamy dill. I really savoured this dish – I don't know anywhere else that sells it.

Then for dessert I chose a chocolate orange mousse. This came in a preserving jar filled half way with marinated pieces of orange, then a generous helping of mousse topped with strawberries and mint. It was lovely.

We also had a good bottle of Argentinian red.

We liked this place immensely and we're going back soon. I do recommend booking.

A vegetarian pub!. I've never heard of a vegetarian pub and this one was worth the visit. Friendly people and really great food. They have plenty of vegan options and you get all the comfort food you might expect from a pub without the animals on the plate. Just excellent. Oh and to get to the food, you just ask the bartender to be seated upstairs, then you walk through the bar, up the secret stairs and to a fantastic seating space. It's pretty neat.

On of the oldest pubs in town. This is a Soho institution. Great in the summer when you can stand outside.

Turned off your food by Britain's horse meat scandal? Put your mind to rest with a vegetarian meal at Soho's Coach and Horses.

Their handmade sausages contain carrots, courgettes, cheese, parsnips and cashew nuts - making them the safest in the country by my reckoning.

The only beef you'll find eating here is in the description of the tomatoes they use.

They do a 'raw' lasagne made from thin slices of golden, candy and red beetroot, layered with tomato and courgette, mortared together with pizzaioli sauce and drizzled with basil and pine nut pesto.

Their Portobello burger contains a mushroom of the same name with crispy halloumi, roasted red pepper, tomato and baby gem lettuce served with root vegetable chips and mushroom ketchup. And you can get a nice roast artichoke and puy lentil side dish to go with it.

The desserts are pretty standard because they are, of course, already meat-free, but they could make a little bit more effort in finding something distinctive and vegetably to add to the experience.

Whatever the case, being London's only fully vegetarian pub is a far cry from its old image.

Historically the pub is associated with hard-drinking journalist Jeffrey Bernard and the classic Keith Waterhouse play Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell, which was set there.

Though it still looks the same with its wood panelled walls, its red cushioned bar stools and decorated with framed newspaper cartoons, the mentality is more progressively contemporary.

And while the staff of Private Eye would regularly have lunch upstairs at the Coach in its heyday it was always known more for its £1 cheese sandwiches, bought over the bar, than its sitdown meals.

The retirement of 'Britain's rudest landlord' Norman Balon in 2006, after 63 years, signalled the seachange and the new owners have striven not to alienate existing customers and fans of the pub while carving out a younger more contemporarily-minded clientele.

As a place to drink it has a lot of character and a relaxed mood, but a pint of beer will cost you more here than just about anywhere else in London. Unfortunately that has been the case for a long time as the pub takes advantage of the theatre crowd that spills out of nearby venues on Shaftesbury Avenue every night.

That doesn't stop me drinking there, and for food if you are a vegetarian, or simply want to mix-up your diet with something a bit lighter, then the Coach's menu is definitely worth a look.

Legendary Soho watering-hole patronised by the likes of Peter Cook, The Beatles, Francis Bacon and, most famously, the columnist Jeffrey Bernard. For years renowned for having London's rudest landlord; I can report that the service is friendly these days, but the period interior remains thankfully unchanged. Owned by Fullers since 2011 who provide a great selection on keg and cask alongside a well stocked fridge. Dog-friendly too.

Quite a nice little pub well hidden in the backstreets of Soho. There seems to be a few pubs of the same name in the area, so make sure you find the right one! The pub has a nice old worldy interior seemingly for days gone by. A pint of London Pride was well kept and the staff were friendly. On keg we’re quite a few craft offerings. Having looked at the menu the prices were pretty expensive so I wasn’t tempted to have one. Luckily the ale was better priced. Worth a visit for a quick one.

A first visit since soon after the limited re-opening post-pandemic. As always a treat, but no sign of the old 'joanna' - it may come back - and no plans for a trade kitchen now. It seems that the available access up and down to the upper floors is inadequate as fire escape routes, so those floors can't be used as public areas like for eating and drinking. Some lovely and well-kept beers ....

Only popped in for a pint but they had a great range of cask ale. Friendly staff and a nice relaxed atmosphere. We didn't try the food.

Always a great place to have a pint if you can get in. We managed to squeeze in to a table and enjoyed the buzz. Quite a selection of ales these days which I can't believe the old guard would have approved of, but my pint of Deya 'What Column Is That In?' was excellent.

Monster munch in a pub! Yay. Well staffed, good service. Busy with all sorts of people from everywhere yet maintains being quintessentially a proper traditional historic little London pub.

My favorite pub in London. I won’t even consider staying in a different neighborhood and not be in close proximity to this lovely place, with kind patrons and the best staff. Kudos to excellent wine selection for a non-beer drinker too.

Very unusual to find a pub in London, much less the west end that serves vegetarian food. Tofu-fish and chips was on the menu that day and it was delicious. Great location close to Soho, Chinatown, the theatres and of course all the attractions in this part of London. The service is friendly. The pub seems to serve a more food/pub type customers and the pub is not as crowed as is often the case with most of the pubs in the west end. A nicer pub for a more relaxed atmosphere.

🚇 Leicester Square 🍺 £5.70 Amstel ❤️ A Soho institution. . The Coach & Horses is located where Greek Street meets Romilly Street in the heart of Soho. Getting here is easy, Leicester Square Tube is just a five minute walk away. . There has been a pub on the site since the 18th century, The current building dates from 1889 and is Grade II listed. . Although this pub is historic, This pub or more so its Guv’nor gained fame for being London’s Rudest Landlord. Norman Balon was officially awarded the title because of the treatment he dished out to his punters, especially the journalists that would regularly find themselves inside the popular watering hole. Rather than take offence, they would fire back, knowing full well that Norman appreciated the insults. Norman retired and sold up in 2006, he is still going strong aged 96. . The decor here is traditional and a bit rough around the edges, which I love. There are 1930’s fitments like the wall paneling and back bar, check out some of the brandnames which once graced the pumps in years gone by. Skol anyone? The bar is divided into three sections, check out the proper pub carpet and the art deco lino. The seating is a mix of poser and low level tables and chairs. One feature you don’t see very often is the spittoon troughs that run around the base of the servery. . This @fullers pub has a good selection of beers including five cask ales. My beer choice was a pint of Amstel, my pint was decent and cost under six quid. There is no food menu at present, bar snacks are available. . I last visited this pub in 2018 and thankfully not much has changed. On this visit the punters were a mix of locals, tourists and some smartly dressed professionals. The atmosphere was relaxed on this Tuesday afternoon and it seemed like a good time to visit to enjoy the pub before the hoards descended. . Although Soho is not the characterful place it once was @thecoachandhorsessoho reminds me of times gone by. This pub is everything you want a Soho pub to be, even if Norman is not behind the bar. Make sure to visit this place, this is one of Soho’s finest. . ℹ️ Info correct on visiting 07/02/23

Nice pub in the LGBT district of town. Good range of beers and spirits including a decent amount of ales on tap. London prices are to be expected. Service was quick as it wasn't heaving and there was even some seating outside. Good place to watch sports too.
