Oldest pub claim, so swung by and yes the core of the building is old but has been sympathetically extended to retain character. The service was warm friendly and quick. Food cooked to order including a catch of the day fish. It arrived piping hot and was good honest trencherman fayre. The pub has a large family friendly garden that leads out to a sea view. Also a large airy conservatory which means dry dining during the British summer. Of the three pubs in the area, I rate this one the best.

Best pub around lowestoft area for sure.
One of my all time favourites, will always come for a beer with the Mrs,
Pool table and music are both class.
Food is amazing 👏

Didn't go to eat, it was a place that was chosen for a meeting with friends. The bar staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. I would recommend this place to meet up with your family and friends

Friendly service, clean pub throughout, dogs allowed not sure if in restaurant though. Big beer garden at the back overlooking the green and out to sea.Bbq's and music at weekends, excellent way to spend a few hours.

Absolutely beautiful Sunday lunch. We had roast pork and it came with the best crackling, as well as roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, cauliflower cheese and a homemade yorkshire pudding, with plenty of gravy. We're only visiting but if we were closer we would definitely be regular visitors here. Such a shame it was so quiet, food this good deserves to be fully booked

I went to Pakefield beach for a walk and on the way in I saw the Trowel and Hammer, Lowestoft's oldest pub, so I knew I had to pop in. The man behind the bar was very friendly and the pub itself had a very welcoming feel. I only had a diet coke because I hadnt planned to eat out that day. I was the only person in there when I was there at around 12:30. I wish I lived closer because I would love this place to be my local pub.

A really lovely pub visit on Thursday evening for food. Although it wasn't accessible ( we had 2 wheelchair users with us) we were allowed to eat outside. The staff member behind the bar was brilliant, friendly, bubbly and smiled, which makes a huge difference these days and lovely to see. We will be back on our next visit. Thanks guys, spot on!

I took my wife, 2 young children and a dog here for lunch and it was really good.
The pub is old and full of character. There is also a good size beer garden and play park outside.
The food was good value and to a good standard.
The staff made is feel very welcome.

Nice location. There is a gate that leads directly from coastal path area. Not tried food yet, I will update.

What a little gem! One of our local pubs, shown massive improvements over the time I've lived nearby. Delicious food, thank you chef! And incredibly kind and natural service from all members of bar staff! Well done! Outside area is great for children and the bar and restaurant area clean and accommodating. We'll be back!

Lovely roast dinner. Even the toddlers enjoyed the meal... Nice change for them from the normal kids meals. Followed by drinks in the garden watching kids play... Perfect. Great service too

Read tripadvisor it really does sum up the experience of an obviously inexperienced management

Dog friendly -open log fire -great food and lovely staff -can't ask for anything else .

The landlord was very rude when my daughter asked him for the wifi code, he even called me an arsehole as I walked out of the door, this is not a family orientated pub. They are very rude owners. I will not be returning, and I've heard similar reviews off other people. I would advise to stay away
