Very good Chinese food in Manchester Chinatown. Try the set banquet menu... You get a good taste of a wide variety of dishes. Has both expected Chinese dishes and some more authentic choices for the more adventurous eater. Everything we ate was delicious.

We recently had the pleasure of dining at this Hunan restaurant, and I am pleased to say it was a delightful experience. The food was absolutely delicious, the bold flavours and fragrant aromas characteristic of traditional Hunan cuisine. Each dish truly showcased the perfect balance of spicy, sour, and savoury flavour. Making every bite an exciting journey for the taste buds. The Spicy Sizzling Beef, in particular, was my personal favourite
- must try!!
The service was equally impressive. The staff were courteous, attentive, and took the time to explain the menu, providing great recommendations to meet our preferences which added a very nice personal touch to our meal.
Highly recommend this place if you’re in Central Manchester and looking for an authentic, enjoyable Hunan dinning experience.

To be Hunanness, this restaurant is very authentic, especially the spicy pork and rice noodles, only hunanness like the wide rice noodles( I think)

We lived in Hunan for a year and were excited to come. It’s located in Manchester’s Chinatown, and the menu includes Chinese, English, and pictures.
The food was very good, though we were a little disappointed that it was not the authentic spicy. I wonder if they assumed we wanted the less spicy British version vs. fiery hot Hunan dishes the province is known for.
The service was good throughout, multiple vegetarian options, and prices moderate for Manchester.

Best Chinese in Manchester no question. The staff are incredibly friendly. The food is cooked perfectly!

Delicious authentic Hunan food. A lot of spicy options if you like that kind of thing. The restaurant is clean and well maintained unlike some other restaurants in Chinatown. They have a great selection of bubble tea too, which is a must try. I would recommend their matcha green tra bubble tea. Amazing!

A very authentic dining experience with my friends here in May 2022. We each ordered various mains and then shared them. There was plenty to take away after. Incredible value for money.
It is on the first floor and there isn't a lift, so you'd have to be mindful for those who'd find difficulty with stairs.

I ordered the chicken gizzle and sea bass. Both tasted amazing. I highly recommend the chicken gizzle very tender and full of flavour. The restaurant itself is very nice with a warm atmosphere and the staff are excellent. Overall I had a good experience. Not 5 due to price being quite expensive. I recommend for special events.

We celebrated Lunar New Year at the Hunan restaurant: simply amazing!!!
Food, from a very wide & rich traditional menu, was exquisite with very generous portions; atmosphere and ambiance are very welcoming with everyone at Hunan, from Managers to waiters, making your experience unique and unforgettable. Definitely going back soon, with more friends, as I want more people to know and enjoy this great restaurant at the heart of Chinatown. 谢谢

By far the best Chinese food I've ever had anywhere. Absolutely incredible. As rich and unbelievably flavourful as it is authentic. We were even greeted by the manager who was very warm and welcoming. Will definitely eat here again! Thank you!

Had a meal here last weekend with all the family. Food was absolutely amazing. Beautiful hot and spicy soup. The spiced beef coriander dish was the best Chinese dish I've ever had, loads of fresh coriander, chilli and garlic. Duck in plum sauce was also beautiful. Really friendly service, got us a table quickly even though it was very busy.

Service here is great, super friendly and attentive. The portions are big, you could easily share two mains and a couple sides between 3 or 4 people. Absolutely delicious too!

First time I've ever been was yesterday. Food was fab, service was great and fast, and the portion size was also great . We chose the 2course lunch menu . Best we've ever had for the price. Even included a soft drink for 80p extra !!!.. Definitely recommend and will definitely go again. A*****

Great food great price!!! Would recommend it been to a few in Chinatown this is by far the best. Had starter and main veg spring rolls then cod in black pepper sauce with fried rice. Good choices for just under £9.

You instantly know you've entered the right choice in a foreign restaurant, when all of the other patrons are the same nationality as the restaurant.
The service was polite, welcoming and friendly. Service, ambience and cleanliness spot on.
The menu choice was interesting and wide.
The ultimate of course was the food itself. Fresh, piping hot, and delicious. I can honesty say the best Chinese I ve eaten, and of course being Cantonese, it had its own unique style.
Chines beer to accompany the meal, a light and refreshing choice.
The only problem was that we were staying in a hotel and therefore a doggy bag was not something we could take advantage of !

Very busy place last night as it was Eve of Chinese New Year. We hadn't booked but they fitted us in. The service was amazing! The food was delicious. We will return next time we visit Manchester. Highly recommended.

Delicious food, fantastic and friendly service. A great alternative to the Cantonese food you get everywhere else. Brilliant.

Very friendly staff. Delicious authentic food. Highly recommend!

They really had a busy night yesterday, being the Chinese new year and all. Amazing food and excellent service despite a full restaurant.
Barry Ford
Very good food and outstanding service. The prices are very reasonable for such a popular restaurant.

Wonderful, memorable meal. So exciting to eat brilliant regional food rather than standard Cantonese fare. Highly recommended.

Authentic Hunanese cuisine. The best I've had outside of Hunan :-)

Not really vegetarian friendly.

Went after reading reviews that it’s vegetarian friendly... I found nothing on the menu that was veggie friendly except Mapo tofu, asked if I could have the tofu crispy, told no and I may not be able to have it as it has pork in it... Got silken tofu with rice and garlic broccoli. £56 for a meal for 2, had a feel of a canteen and not a restaurant. Was ok but had much better meals at Little Yang Sing, much wider vegetarian options and nicer ambience, food was nice an Hunan’s but not a great experience.

In Manchester visiting my son with my Chinese wife. The Mrs was missing the 'spicy' taste of home food when we spotted the Hunan restaurant. Was plesently surprised that they served authentic Chinese food, the boss is from Hunan province. Food and service was fantastic. Can recommend this restaurant if you want to try authentic Chinese food from the home of Chairman Mao.

Apparently Manchester has the 3rd largest Chinatown in Europe. London is probably 1st but I'm not sure which is 2nd. Nonetheless given there aren't really any typical local Manchester foods then any excuse for Asian was a good one. Funnily most of the well reputed ones are on the very expensive side which I wasn't really up for - although Tattu does look good if up for it - or Cantonese which I think is less exciting than other Chinese cuisines.

Hunanese food is apparently known for its plentiful use of chillies and garlic - SOLD. Despite the multitude of both in all of the dishes we had, each plate still managed to differentiate itself from the rest. The menu is extensive so it was difficult to choose, although Paul had recommended the braised taro. Not something I'd ever come across before, we were more than happy to give it a go. Taro is a root vegetable (not dissimilar to a potato) and when braised took on an almost dumpling-like consistency; it came flecked with chilli and spring onions, and turned out to be even better when reheated the next day.

A recent recommendation to us, our first experience of Hunan was a good one on the whole but, like many of the Chinese restaurants in Manchester, we come away feeling we should have learnt the Mandarin for, “Please can you cook the dished the authentic Chinese way and not the gloopy Anglicised way?”

I found Hunan through a review on the Creative Tourist blog. The food here is great, and the menu is blissfully BS-free. Smoked things taste smoked, pickled things taste pickled, things that claim to contain meat do, indeed, contain generous amounts of meat. Nothing was skimped on, and the portions were great for the price. Two people could easily split a main and leave satisfied. The £2 chinese tea turned out to be a whole pot. Their homestyle, braised dishes left us full and happy. The bill was very reasonable, and the service was attentive without hovering.
The major thing this place lacks is magic. All the food we had was great, but I'm not daydreaming about any of it afterwards. I agree with Natalie W. that this would make a very poor choice for an outing with someone you don't know well, like a first date or business lunch. If clay pots full of tripe and pickled cabbage sound like a good time to you, or if you're tired of ordering dishes with expensive ingredients, only to find they've been padded out with sweetcorn or somesuch, please make a trip here. There is so much on the menu I can't wait to try (duck tongues, I'm looking at you), I'll be back very soon.

Duo Jiao Yu Tou ruined everything for me. All the other dishes are somewhat okay(not great by all means). The fish head is extremely fishy, yet lack the taste of seasoning. It tastes like they forgot to put salt in there. Not recommended for those who are Chinese or want to try real Chinese cuisine.

A couple of foodie friends had visited this place in late 2013 and commented about the great food it serves on twitter. They suggested we arrange to go with them. 2 months in the planning to go to a Chinese restaurant and here we are at Hunan in the epicentre of Chinatown.
We were a bit early so delved into the menu with a tsing-tao in hand. Every other customer was from China or this part of Asia suggesting we were not going to get the usual gooey beef and bambou mixture or the gelatinous chop suey.
The menu is mesmerising. Before you even see any food you know you'll have to be back as you just want to try everything. Between the four of us we had a good go however. We ordered the salt chilli tripes (I love tripes), Braised duck in beer sauce, bean sprouts and peppers, smoked bacon kinda spicy stew, whole sea bass in chili sauce, smoked aubergines...
Boy were we full. But the flavours were just fantastic. It's very spicy but not so that you can't taste the food. Plenty of garlic and soy sauce but superbly cooked.
Service was really good too. The range of drinks isn't great but if you're happy with Tsing Tao then you're on. And chances are you'll be the only one drinking it in the restaurant too as the locals have a strange looking iced tea (I think).
We all loved it and I will most certainly be back for more soon.

Went here on the friday during chinese new year and was expecting it to be packed. It wasnt but it was probably due to the fact that it was just after 6pm when we met.
I didnt really look at the menu as we were on a time schedule so my friend ordered for me. If you like your food hot then this is the place for you! Everything came with lashings of chilli and garlic. We had 3 dishes and rice had some very tasty noodles that were served with pak choi. They also serve hot pot and bbq dishes here which are cooked at your table by your own faur hand. I would like to cone back and try the hot pot as it looked interesting and a popular option.

I had extremely high expectations of Hunan which were probably unfair but it wasn't a major disappointment in any case. I ordered my two favourite dishes - fried chicken with chilli and aubergine with pork mince. Both were fairly good although involved lots of garlic which I realised too late was probably not a great idea to eat on a date. I tried to persuade the date to order the Hunan beef with cumin as I have previously eaten and adored lamb with cumin but he went for the sizzling beef which as he accurately pointed out tasted strangely similar to the pork with aubergine. Hm. His fried chicken wings were a little tough. I would give Hunan another go because it's reasonably priced and they have a pleasing selection of scary Chinese offal dishes on the menu, but it's probably not a good place to come for the first time with someone you are trying to impress!
