Small Victories

Classic 3.5. 3’s too low, 4 too high. Not easy going either way. It’s a gorgeous North Carlton location here. Lovely cafe. Lovely inviting, comfortable and classy space. The soft piano playing added to the benign atmosphere. Overall, it had a lovely old club like feel. The coffee is good. Very good in fact. Buoyed, I ordered an Asian salad for a quick lunch. I’d call it peasant but basic. It looked a tad prosaic and so it proved. Service was lovely throughout.

Very pleasant experience all around. The atmosphere is warm and inviting. The Chai was delicious- great recipe and very well prepared. My breakfast was also delightful. I ordered the Salmon Benedict - eggs were poached beautifully and went perfectly with the sauce. All of the ingredients were high quality and the dish came together well. Their homemade pastries are also amazing. I will definitely be back!

So up until mid-2017, this was my review..."Great service, awesome food and coffee!!". Unfortunately it seems as often happens to these sorts of successful cafes, the owners sold and the new owners don't have that 'flair'. The menu is much reduced and quite plain, the coffee is average and the service is a few steps below previous...Overall I'm sorry to say it adds up to a very average Melbourne breakfast experience. I have to reduce my rating from 5 stars to 3, in Melbourne there are too many better options.

Recently changed management so currently (as of July 2017) the menu options have reduced and are a little bit sparse, but still recommend for the friendly and attentive service and the good atmosphere. Breakfast options have reduced for the interim (no more amazing French toast!) but they do great eggs on sourdough toast.

A real shame about this cafe. Really slow service. only 2 people on for a Saturday morning which is never a good sign. The women was doing her best running around but the guy working was so slow and just taking his time. Also had trouble with a simple order which after pointing to it in the fridge I just gave up when he couldn't pull the correct drink from the fridge. The new management should try to focus on how the original people ran it with success. I get the impression this cafe will try to up their prices soon to make up for their loss of customers
