Bringing Thai dining to the heart of Newcastle, Chaophraya is an ideal classy spot (upstairs at the entrance to Eldon Square) to experience superb views of Greys Monument from its rooftop terrace. Carla, our hostess on the day, pleasantly asked us where we would like to sit, outside or inside. We chose inside so we could check out the stunning interior. Everywhere you turn, Chaophraya’s beauty hits you. The ambient lighting was sublime, particularly where we were sat which was by the window. The tall elegant seats had an opulent style. Without doubt, Chaophraya looked the part. It was impossible not to be impressed. Settled, we ordered our drinks. With many cocktail options available, we decided to go for an Alexander X and an Amazing Thailand. The Alexander X was a strong, sharp whisky and the Amazing Thailand was a sweet, pineapple infusion. They were both outstanding. We will definitely come back for more cocktails - ideal to relax with on their rooftop terrace in the summer sun. From a brand new expansive menu, we were ready to order our starters. It was a tough choice, but we decided to go all out and try the Khun Kim Grill Satay Platter for two. Sirloin steak, sugar snap peas, moo ping, chestnut mushrooms, chicken satay, aubergine and cherry tomato skewers served with barbecue, peanut and jaew sauces. It was a fabulous sight when our dishes arrived. Sizzling vigorously, the chicken satay was a joy to behold. Five kebabs of tender marinated chunks of chicken drizzled in coconut milk making them even more alluring – they were super. The steak was just as tender and served rare, just how I prefer it. The sauces were right up there as the best sauces I’ve ever had, particularly the peanut sauce which was a wonderful combination with the chicken. They all complemented the dish well and were a triumph of variation. The accompanied kebabs of juicy chestnut mushrooms, moist aubergine and crunchy sugar snap peas were all tremendous. As starters go, you’re not getting much better. As we were about to order our mains, I couldn’t help but notice the place filling up. Even with the place more full, Chaophraya manages to maintain a serene yet charming atmosphere. It was a difficult choice to choose from such a wonderful selection of dishes on the menu. With guidance from Carla, who was an attentive host, we decided on Weeping Tiger Sirloin Steak and Lamb Massaman Curry, with Riceberry Rice and Ceviche Scallop Chilli and Dressing Nasturniums from the Thai Reimagined choice. When our dishes came, our table was filled with exotic colours and aromas of spice. The taste of the 21-day dry-aged Sirloin Steak falling apart as the black pepper sauce oozed thick, scintillating flavours that smacked my senses into life. Succulent, caramelised, tender large pieces of meat; the slow cooked Lamb Massaman was quite simply the dish of the day. At just the correct spice level for my palate (I asked for it hotter than usual) it was curry at its finest. My mouth is salivating thinking back to it. Thailand’s own superfood, Riceberry Rice was a major surprise. Unique, deep purple, organic rice full of goodness – it was the best rice I’ve ever had. Resting on a trio of leafy beds, the Scallop was beautifully presented and was a fresh, tangy addition. Our main event was an extremely delightful revelation. Although we had scoffed so much food, we had to attempt dessert as Chaophraya was going for gold. Again, with excellent options on offer, we decided on a Chocolate Bombe and a Chocolate Box. Yes it was very sweet. Yes it was rich. Yes it was decadent. But can I have another Chocolate Bombe please? When the salted caramel sauce was poured, I was dazzled as the bombe subtly exploded before my eyes. The peanut mousse, peanuts and toffee were perfect fillings for the mesmerising sphere. The Chocolate Box, a dark and white chocolate mousse, came with with a dollop of toasted coconut ice-cream and an intimate dash of berry sauce. The smoothness of the mousse combined with the coconut ice-cream was beautiful. Chaophraya can do desserts. In fact, Chaophraya can do cuisine! In essence: the setting, the location and particularly the food at Chaophraya is top notch – it offers a special, luxurious dining experience. If you’re still deciding what to do today, go and try Chaophraya out – it’ll blow your mind.

I've been to numerous Chaoprayas in the country, and none equal the original Leeds one for service or food. However, this one stands with Leeds as the best I've been to. From the way we were welcomed in by the staff, to the view - onto Greys Monument I couldn't fault it. The meal was exquisite, one of the best Thai meals I've had, and the service was exceptional. Really making my wife's birthday celebration even more special. If you want a meal to remember, go to Chaopraya Newcastle. Hats off to everyone !

The ambience was top notch with the view from the window seats. Papaya salad and basil fried pork were not bad, but did not stand out as much as I expected in terms of spice/flavour. The pineapple fried rice could do with more wok hei but was otherwise delicious. Waiters did not let us know beforehand that the prawn crackers would be subjected to extra charges, but were very polite. Would still come back again.

I just want to say thank you to Mike and Asia who got us sorted yesterday for my partners surprise dinner. I remember trying to book the terrace for 7 guests but it was unavailable. I eventually put it in a request box and on the day of the event, Mike reached out to me and tried to sort the terrace out for me. Asia was the one who brought us the wine and drinks and when I told her it was his birthday, she got him a cake. We ALL enjoyed the food and the ambiance and honestly, it was worth everything we paid. Our friends also loved the food and the restaurant. Will definitely recommend.

We attended the Chaophraya for a celebratory meal and it did not disappoint. On arrival we were met at the entrance with a friendly smile and shown to our table. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. We opted for a celebratory set menu. The starters arrived quickly and were made up of chicken tacos, satay, spring rolls, prawns and a duck salad, all of which were delicious. For mains we received sweet and sour crispy chicken, salt and pepper king prawns, beef panang and chicken fried rice. The portions were large allowing us all to have big portions. My son opted for a chicken pad thai which he devoured, so it must of been good. My stand out dish was the beef panang which was mild and creamy with a little bit of a bite. Overall the meal was fantastic. I amended my dessert and opted for some sorbet, three scoops of differing flavours which certainly refreshed my taste buds. The drinks menu is large and as I was driving I chose a lychee no-jito which was really fresh and tasty. The whole experience was well worth it and I would certainly recommend the restaurant and its staff.

This place blew my taste buds off. Incredible traditional flavours and so much effort in the presentation. I got the Thai basil rove and it was superior to many I've had. Finn and Scott were absolute delights to deal with Scott leading the way to an exclusive feeling experience and Finn hitting me with some tasty sips to keep me going until the food was ready 🤘

I came here for dinner on my birthday. This was my first time here and I really liked it. Chaopraya is a great choice for a date or special dinner. The service was super quick! (it was a Monday though) For drinks there was a 2 for 1 cocktail special, so we both had tigers eye which was delicious. There was an abundance of drinks choices and food. It was very difficult to choose what to eat but in the end I decided to go for 3 starters because I had my eye on the mango sticky rice for dessert. I got spring rolls, sweet corn cakes, and summer rolls (all vegetarian). All dishes came garnished with sweet chili sauce, violas, sprouts and/or banana leaves. This is something I really enjoy and am very particular about. It was very neat and the best part was it did not take away from the dish. A lot of garnishes interfere with the flavour or texture making it hard to distinguish the quality of the taste. The sweet corn cakes were definitely my favourite, and the spring rolls landed an easy second. The sweet corn cakes had an excellent balanced of moist and crisp. The different flavours were really strong meaning you could accompany it with sweet chili sauce without sacrificing the food itself. You can never go wrong with spring rolls, there wasn’t anything particularly special about these ones but they were very tasty. The summer rolls were well wrapped, fresh and super crunchy. They were very tasty and I loved them even though I do prefer a summer roll with peanut sauce and vermicelli noodles. The starter portions were bigger than I expected (definitely not a bad thing) so I ended up taking the remaining summer rolls home and not ordering a dessert. Although the meat and fish dishes dominated the menu, the innovation of the vegetarian meals made up for it entirely. My boyfriend had the beef penang, which he said was great and quite spicy (but in a good way) however, the beef was less tender than he thought it would be. I tried some of the sauce and it was very good. He also ordered the chicken tacos as a starter which came after the main because the kitchen accidentally made vegetable tacos (again, this did not bother us at all). My boyfriend was also not able to finish his meal completely so did not order a dessert either. There are some incredible flavours on the menu. Incorporating fruit with savory is a definite favourite of mine however, if this is not something you enjoy there are plenty of staple Thai dishes. The menu states how spicy dishes are using chili icons which is helpful for new customers to decipher what they can handle as every restaurant is different. The interiors were not the best which was a little disappointing considering the quality of the food and how they promote themselves. Initially I was put off by it being located in Eldon Sq. however, a singular entrance by lift helped to make it feel more special. The building itself is beautiful and a rooftop restaurant is always nice. I did feel like there wasn’t much ambience however, it was a Monday. From its appearance it did not seem like a Thai restaurant. I understand it is a chain which takes away from authenticity but it still would have been nice to see some traditional furniture or at least a few tributes to Thai culture that weren’t limited to Buddhas. As a slightly more ‘sophisticated’ establishment, I did expect better however, it was still comfortable. (I am used to restaurants that do this and I prize places that have not been gentrified or white washed so do not be put off by this as it’s just something I look for in a restaurant experience but obviously the main focus of this is always the food which in this case was amazing) The prices were relatively decent however, as university students this isn’t a restaurant we’d be able to go to often. I think the prices are completely reasonable considering the taste and presentation of the dishes. For the two of us we paid £72 including service charge. * The negative comments are just explaining why I have given 4 stars instead of 5. I would still highly recommend this place to everyone reading.

Thai Fine-Dining - this spot really serves great food. We went for the vegan options and were impressed by the presentation of the cuisine served here. The tofu, fried with it's crispy outer layer, was delicious. The curries were really rich, and the service was excellent. The interior is exquisitely designed with beautiful Thai-themed furniture. *for NHS personnel, you get a whopping 30% discount! Don't miss this opportunity out!
