Restaurant 231 (upstairs) is too expensive for what it is. Prices are that of a hatted restaurant but not of that quality and service. The steak was served blue which I like and was delicious but I think would be a shock for most people especially when you aren't asked how you'd like it. I thought the garlic butter had an unusual flavour. The fries were underdone which is not good enough when it costs $35. The gnocchi and chicken dishes were delicious and interesting but again still overpriced. The waitstaff removed plates before others on the table were finished eatinv which is my biggest pet peeve in restaurant service - it's so rude and makes you feel like you're being rushed which is not nice especially when you are spending that kind of money.
The fitout is a confused mismatch - Asian/retro/art deco antique, kind of works but is a little strange.
Next time I would skip the restaurant and eat off the bar menu downstairs, get some drinks and watch the live music.

On par food, unique and delicious cocktails in a super cool setting with friendly staff.
On our quest to experience never before visited Novacastrian restaurants, The Flying Tiger serendipitously became the place for dinner.
The atmosphere is eclectic with a kind of Hawaiian or maybe maybe Polynesian feel. The upstairs restaurant is low lit, sets a nice mood for a date night.
We walked in starving and quickly ordered scallops and croquettes (homemade ketchup was tasty!). Both full of flavour and nice teaser for more to come. Accompanied by a Gold Fashioned cocktail (using choc bitters!), this is the second best old fashioned I've had in Newcastle.
A snack of overpriced fries with a wanky French name that seemed like it was trying to cover up for the fact that the fries were on par with store brand oven chips. Yummy homemade sauce (same as what came with the croquettes) but no seasoning. The only negative of the evening.
Insert Hells Angel (gin) cocktail here. If I was such a huge whiskey fan this may have been my cocktail of the night.
Crispy skin chicken and mussels in a creamy white wine sauce finished us off nicely. Nothing amazing, the chicken was fine, mussels were the best dish of the night. A glass of sparkling from Tasmania, fine bubbles and a light sweetness, a quality wine.
Service was highly attentive and friendly. All food and cocktails came out quick.

Out on a Saturday night @TheFlyingTiger231 and was feeling peckish so got these croquettes: Jamon, Manchego cheese, house made ketchup
Crunchy on the outside, soft gooey rich oozing cheese on the inside. That house made ketchup provided the perfect acidity and sweetness against the rich cheese filling. Yum
Lovely venue with many cool spaces and nice relaxed vibe.

A modest entry opens into a really funky space, great to catch up with friends for a cocktail. It is light and airy with a theatrical decor that transports you to another time, another place.
The menus is really interesting. We tried a sample of small bites and the flavours were amazing. It's only recently opened, so the staff were new, but all very courteous and helpful.
We will be back!!

Went on a busy Saturday night. Great venue, vibe and atmosphere. Good range of cocktails, spirits, beers and wine but opportunity to employ another barman to get drinks out in a reasonable time. The guy that was on was like a machine and going as fast as he could but just too many thirsty customers! Food was OK but again pretty slow on a busy night. A little hit and miss, especially regarding value for money. All dishes were fine, but none were "wow" which you kind of expect for the $$ and menu descriptions. Great friendly service overall .

We went specifically to try the pasta special on a Tuesday night. Both tried the two versions on offer and we were really happy with the quality and innovative ingredients. We had been here previously for the $18 Thursday night special which was really good as well. Meals aren’t massive but at those prices the value is there considering the pasta is not pre cooked and made to order. The mains were also of a quality standard. This is not pub grub at all.
The owner is so friendly and welcoming which is a nice touch.
We will definitely continue to support this innovative Newcastle business.

Beautiful space. Funky and eclectic. There's a plane in the ceiling, the food is delish and the drinks are great. What more could you ask for? As a side note, the staff are all awesome. Love it here.

The best food/drinks/service/venue in Newcastle.
The scallops are AMAZING. Steak was next level. The cocktails were perfect every time. And my god the dessert- unreal.
So Instagram worthy! The venue is incredible with an airplane suspended in the middle of the building.
Thanks for yet another amazing night!
