Couldn’t wait to visit here as I had seen all the amazing cakes on offer…first stop after arriving even before the Bird Observatory where we were staying had cake and coffee and bought extra cake for following day (they weren’t open for the remainder of our visit 😩). The cakes didn’t disappoint wonderful strawberry iced cake and the wonderful views of Seaweed eating sheep just topped it off….thank you 🙏

I was lucky enough whilst staying on Sanday isle to hear about an excursion being held to North Ronaldsay Island which included the lighthouse tour. Glad I went as we got to meet one of the lighthouse keepers prior to its automation in 1998, who gave us some background. It's an amazing feat of engineering given in location, still the tallest in operation in the British isles at 42 meters and an incredible price of architecture when you get up it's 176 stairs. If you get the opportunity to visit the island and can go and see this and the original light house which stands off to one side of it, I'd highly recommend it. It's a bit of hidden treasure, there is a cafe on site at the lighthouse and another down by the ferry terminal, well worth a trip out.

The lighthouse keeper was very friendly and gave an interesting summary of the history of the lighthouse. The lighthouse itself is perfectly maintained and its lantern testifies to the finest victorian craftsmanship. From the top you could see Sumburgh Head, Foula and Fair Isle.

It is a beautiful place in a wee island of North Ronaldsay.

Interesting and good food.

All'interno del Lighthouse Visitor Center si trova una piccolina ma molto graziosa Lighthouse Café con tre tavolini ed altri esterni. I proprietari Louise e Neil sono persone stupende e la cucina di Louise uno spettacolo. Siamo giunti al Lighthouse Café in quanto avevo prenotato online un Cottage per trascorrere il nostro anniversario di matrimonio. Abbiamo capito subito che qualcosa non quadrava non mi era ancora mai successo di prenotare una accomodation e di trovarla occupata perché la signora era ancora dentro. Louise e Neil non sono i proprietari del Cottage ma hanno fatto tutto il possibile ed impossibile dedicando circa due ore del loro tempo e a ormai chiusura del locale per trovarci una stanza e ci sono riusciti e per questo vi ringrazio immensamente, siete stati favolosi. Gestiscono anche il noleggio delle biciclette che sono collocate in una casetta in legno vicino all'aereoporto. Abbiamo fatto la merenda in caffetteria con una buona torta al limone e siamo ritornati il giorno successivo per pranzare, il tortino di montone è stato una bomba di bontà. I piatti sono preparati con cura al momento, con ingredienti locali e freschi, tutto ottimo. È assolutamente da provare, è forse uno dei posti migliori dove mangiare alle Orcadi. Il Lighthouse Visitor Center consiste in due stanze dove viene raccontata la storia e la vita dell'isola, la storia del faro ed un negozietto con prodotti di artisti locali. Il Lighthouse fu costruito da Alan Stevenson nel 1852 con un'altezza di 42 metri che lo rende il più alto del Regno Unito, si trova al Point of Sinsoss. Non essendoci pietre locali da utilizzare per la costruzione tutto doveva avvenire tramite trasporti in barca ma essendo troppo caro si sono optati i mattoni rossi. Nel 1889 suoi mattoni rossi vennero dipinte due fasce bianche da renderlo visibile durante il giorno. Ha la sua lente originale una Freshnel che prende il nome dal suo inventore Augustin Freshnel. Una luce bianca lampeggiante ogni 10 secondi. Da qui si vedono le famose pecore in spiaggia.
