We opted for the Eggs Royale paired with a Latte and Breakfast Tea. Let me tell you it didn’t disappoint!! The hollandaise sauce was just perfect *chefs kiss* including the salmon, poached eggs and the muffins were easy to cut through - everything was well done!
I also love the service here, staff are very attentive and friendly. Plus if you’re not already full the cake selection is pretty impressive too!

Lovely cafe restaurant in the old walls of Portsmouth old town seaside.
Beautifully restored building.
Food well presented and gorgeous with generous portions.
We had granola with raspberries, sourdough toast (2 gigantic slices) and poached eggs on sourdough toast with americano coffees.
Staff smiley and friendly. We were offered seats outside in a cute courtyard with estuary views but the waiter said it could be a bit chilly - lovely that they told us that. We sat inside and it was great.
Cakes, pastries, sausage rolls and pasties all looked lovely, as did the breakfasts brought out to other customers.
Great vibe - definitely recommend it. I

This place is superb, what a setting too!
Stumbled across it whilst out with the kids exploring and fancied a coffee.
Well, I can say we left there with more than a coffee and will returning, Food was spot on! The price was very welcoming, and the venue location is awesome.

Great helpful staff, provided a water bowl for the dog. The breakfast was lovely, quality ingredients well cooked.
Superb setting with the old archways intact.
Worth calling in.

Situated within the Hotwalls. Expected a cave/cellar experience. Where the sea can crash against the windows in a storm with high tide. Brilliant service. Food fresh and lush. We enjoyed breakfast. The Veggie Stack, Eggs Royale, Spice Island Scrambled Egg. Good price for quality food.

This a absolutely stunning venue, right on the waterfront. The food and cakes would make any foodie swoon. It's highly recommended and a must visit if you are in Portsmouth! I'm sure there is some interesting history to it as well.. as it is built into the old barracks in the hotwalls.

Really great location, you feel like you are eating in an ancient Castle or fort. Very clean and well maintained. Friendly staff. The food is bit in the expensive side, which is understandable given the location, but everything tasted good. Would recommend trying to grab one of the window seats with views of the Ocean.

Simply the BEST Sausage Sandwich I have ever had, that bread is the thickest ever cut and as soft as marshmallow with a lovely crust.. Staff were friendly, professional and great smile. Highly recommended.

We supplied our vintage camera photo booth for a private event at The Canteen last night. The wedding reception was wonderful, the staff were friendly and helpful and the venue is perfect for intimate events. The vintage camera photo booth fitted in perfectly with the surrounds.

Quite possibly one of the best locations on the South Coast in terms of it's proximity to the sea and view, but for me, that's about as far as it goes.
We went on a Sunday, with our two young daughters. Having been on a previous occasion during 2017 we thought improvements may have been made for individuals with dietary needs, but no, none had been made. It's such a shame as so many other eateries are clearly realising the benefits of catering to food intolerance's or allergy sufferers. I'm not talking about individuals who do it as a lifestyle choice, but individuals who HAVE to do it for very real health problems.
Not one dish on the menu would be suitable for a gluten free vegan, oh but wait, items can be taken out of dishes when it suits. For instance, as a GF lactose intolerant vegetarian I had little choice but to go for the GF 'caramalised pear salad', but without the croutons (that now makes it GF) but the price remains the same, so less ingredients = more profit - nice way to penalise celiacs! I made a choice to eat the stilton (I've paid the price for that one!). I would like to say the caramalised pear was nice, but I don't think it had been caramalised, poached, yes, but caramlised, I'm doubtful.
The waiting staff were pleasant enough but lacked knowledge of the menu. I asked for Caramelised Red Onion, Garlic Mushrooms, Swiss Cheese, Sourdough to be made as GF without the cheese and on GF bread, but I was told the kitchen were too busy to adapt anything?! How they managed a salad without the croutons I'll never know! As for prices, they are clearly having to pay high business rates, charging £9.50 for a salad with 5 ingredients in is daylight robbery!
So many other eateries cater and listen to their customers needs, although I talked all of this through with one of the waiting staff I doubt there will be any change, so as much as we'd like to go back we can't, it's just not worth it to be made to feel a 'pain' for having a medical condition.

This as been my regular coffee shop since it opened and the views are amazing when you sit outside . The staff are lovely and the food is great ... however I do think the price of cakes is a little over the top that’s why I have given it 4 stars .

We had 2 teas and 2 cheese straws out on the terrace, overlooking crashing waves and lovely view of harbour entrance. Perfection! Lovely teas with made with fresh leaves. Unique location, wonderful decor, dog friendly too. Our dog Ringo loved it and liked the free dog treats. Staff are great. Must be the best cafe in Portsmouth!

The whole experience was enjoyable. The atmosphere and building is lovely. The coffee was perfect, not at all bitter. When I asked what gluten free food they served I was so delighted to find that the majority of cakes were GF. The first café in 3 weeks that catered for gluten free.

Been waiting a long time to pop in! We had yummy sandwiches and cake with our coffee and hot chocolate and couldn’t fault the historical setting, friendly service or superb quality of the food! Just waiting to find another excuse to be in the area! I’m sure it won’t be too long! Highly recommend

2 days in old Portsmouth with friends , had breakfast twice in here . Fabulous view of the harbour entrance sitting inside the 500 year old sea wall, beautiful food, artfully presented with excellent service . We were made to feel very special and best of all we were allowed to have our 2 golden retrievers with us. Will definitely return and hopefully in summer spend leisurely time on the terrace . It truly ticked all the boxes :-),

I must admit we only had coffee and cake but the staff are very friendly and efficient and the atmosphere is great. A real asset to the area.

It’s my mums birthday today so we thought we would take her to the Canteen for a nice birthday lunch having never been there before. What a mistake that was. We have just walked out after arriving and the most obnoxious waitress showing us to our table, we allowed her attitude as we thought she might a little hot and bothered, as it happened that wasn’t the case. She took our drink and food order without writing it down and then the drink order came out incorrect twice. When my mum approached her the second time to tell her it was wrong again she huffed and puffed, told my mum it was her fault and then shouted that she was unable to take the incorrect drink back as she had a bad hand and her other hand was full, which would have been fine if it were not for her terrible attitude. At that point we walked out and advised the staff at the counter to cancel our food order. The waitress was absolutely atrocious, her customer service was appalling and we will not be returning there again. Avoid it at all costs!
