I love coming here as the atmosphere is brilliant and the landlady Debby makes you feel welcome as do the bar staff. The pub has excellent meals which are very cheap too..I would recommend The Volunteer to everyone

New landlord October 2023. Now a proper United pub. £2.85 for a good pint of Holts.

New landlady Emma, very nice lady. Good pint of Holts, then was on their lager as they changed the bitter barrel, nice and spacey pub and if its sunny plenty space in rear beer garden. Recommended. Bit far for me but when I'm in the area...

Nipped in for a quick beer after arriving too early to meet my mates. Relaxed for 30mins with a beautiful pint of black. ( dark mild ) Cheap beer £2.70 What a great price. Pity I was meeting my mates in another pub in Sale. Still got great options in Eccles were I live for another pint of black. ( others HOLTS beers are cheap and great to drink as well but black is my favourite. )

A quiet drinkers pub where you can have a conversation and hear other people. No crowds no kids no food. Lovely

Great cheap friendly pub. Popped in a Saturday evening when the entertainment act were half way through their first set. Pretty good singers and were good entertainers too. Saw a poster near to where we sat behind the stage which informs of live acts every Saturday here. It's a Holt's pub, if you've been before you'll know great value and their typical line up of own brewed beers

Now under new management, great looking pub outside, very welcoming and friendly staff, beers great, loads of choice, loads of room for social distancing, live sports tv, open mic nights, and most importantly great atmosphere, a must if your in the area.

Traditional Holts pub. Wonderful bitter at £2.15 a pint. A warm, friendly welcome from excellent landlady and her husband. Great food during the day at unbelievable cheap prices. I wish there were more old fashioned pubs like this.

Karaoke on Saturday night was fun and the staff were very accommodating to our private party and had provided buffet food for us. There is a pool table, a dart board and a jukebox. The toilets were clean. They have live music on which is advertised well throughout the pub itself.

Older style pub with great staff, landlady is always friendly to and all very helpful, we had 3 Sunday dinners, 3 deserts and 3 drinks, which were really nice and coming to under £20 pound for the lot. Hidden little gem, will be definitely returning again.

The owners are very nice. Landlady was great when she served us and had a good sense of humour. Double your spirits on Gin and Tonics for a £1 (this offer may be on other drinks too). A traditional pub that reminds me of the places I used to go for that proper pub experience in my university days. Clean but some elements could do with a refurb - but would that refurb lose some of its charm?

Traditional Joseph Holt owned pub on the northern fringe of Sale town centre. Large building with two games rooms or areas divided by seating - one for pool, the other for darts. To the left of the bar is a raised seating area that acts as the lounge. Spacious and well run. Filled rolls are available for those with a hunger. Impressive Victorian structure that is worthy of a visit.
