Reviews Mermaids Locker

We arrived in Sandwich looking for a place for evening meal. We tried almost every pub near the market square area only to be turned away by all - the kitchens all seem to close by 8:30 pm in this place... But then we discovered the Mermaids Locker... I pleaded to be fed and the kind man behind the counter checked briefly with his chef and we were welcomed to stay. We took the large table in this tiny, cosy restaurant and settled down. To begin with I ordered a German based cask ale whilst the family stuck to soft drinks. We then ordered from the menu - two of us went for the toad in the hole with saute potatoes and thick red wine based gravy. The third had meat balls on spaghetti. As we waited for everything to be freshly cooked (we were duly warned that this could take 20 minutes or so), we nibbled on bread and a small bowl of olives. And struck up a conversation with the three other guests who, we later discovered were related and good friends of the waiter & chef. They certainly added to the entertainment and made us feel welcome. The meal was excellent and we decided to really push the boat out and order dessert - profiteroles with ice cream for me and a shared sticky toffee pudding & custard for the rest of the family. As is often the case, the chance discover of something different turned out to be a great success. We probably wouldn't have even found the Mermaids Locker if we hadn't really been desperate to find a late evening dining place. It's pretty much hidden next to a kebab shop! But once discovered we realised that we had found a gem. And, I shouldn't forget that the decor here is something very special - something like an antique shop. I found mesmerised by an ancient portrait of a mysterious pretty young lady whom I was reliably informed was French and had been painted after her death... Like all the pictures and many of the artefacts here, they could be purchased. Miss "Ghostly One" was up for sale for the princely sum of 150 Pounds sterling :-)

Great fresh ideas with contemporary cooking seasoned with care for the product and customer in mind. What a place. Great furnishings, lovely hosting and a local friendly welcome with well kept beers, good cider and a wide variety on all other quenchers. Friend of mine often saves me half his meal on the chicken wraps and I literally light up like a dog when he see's shopping coming in the door. Always tastes great and extremely fresh. Tonight he bought me a Thai ball when I was working and he said they made and cooked it recently- I grade my food on tastiness if it tastes different, but exquisite, with each and every bite- and the Mermaid never fails to deliver. Top notch.

Absolutely fantastic meal last Friday. The staff were very friendly, nothing was too much trouble for the Chefs. We all enjoyed 3 courses. Starters: Tempura chicken, Calamari and a Scallop & King prawn dish. For main: Cod for one, Rib eye steak for other 3 of us (all cooked to perfection) with chips and accompaniments. For dessert: Brownie for 2, Peanut butter ice cream and lastly a Profiteroles. A sublime meal, would highly recommend!! Compliments to the Chefs again!!

A micropub tucked away near Sandwich's central square. Quite eclectic but comfortable and good beers. may be worth checking hours before visiting as it can be a bit irregular.

I came here to celebrate my partners birthday after many recommendations and promises of excellent food from friends and locals alike. I phoned in advance and, speaking to the chef, arranged for my partner to have roast partridge, a favourite of hers, which was served with seasonal vegetables and a red berry jus. The food was truly exceptional, beyond all my expectations, safe to say she was impressed too! All in all I found the place a lovely, welcoming venue, with amazing food and great drinks, I myself enjoying a pristine pale ale before moving onto the bubbly! I would definitely recommend and will be back again. Attached is a picture of my partners meal, it would of been a crime not to share it.

What a hidden gem. So I didn't know about this pub which was hidden in the corner. We went in without a booking, thinking it's a Sunday and its quite early, we should be fine. but they said they all quite full, so I was surprised. They popped us at the outside table. It was cosy and really lovely. The food came and we were not disappointed. One of our friends hate vegetables but is a veggie.. and he ate all of the food cos it was so delicious. The portions are generous.

Lovely cozy place with nice selection of drinks. We were there to have a meal and it didn't disappoint. Nice relaxed atmosphere and the food was really tasty. The log fire kept the room just at the right temperature on this chilly windy night.

Thank you to Annette and Gavin for a wonderful evening in their quirky establishment. Gavin spent great thought and consideration towards My wife’s dietary needs and delivered delicious food for both of us. We met some locals towards the end of the meal and they couldn’t have been more charming. Had a thoroughly entertaining evening. Bravo.

Underwhelmed by my starter - found it a little too bland and heavy. Very impressed by the main course - fantastic home-made burger. Very good service - owner was very polite and helpful. Was going to give 3 stars but I think overall this place deserves 4.

Super cosy little pub with a lovely fire in the back and a cute little outside area too. Good draught beers and the food was amazing. The chef clearly knows what they're doing and has a real care for their craft. As long as you're willing to spend a little more than your average pub dinner, you'll get something far better than the average pub dinner.

Great night with live music too. We only had drinks, but the food being served up looked amazing, we must return. Had a few pints of the Spaten lager from Munich. Very nice. Loved the decor with the taxidermy and soft lighting coupled with the nautical theme. Gavin the host was very welcoming and friendly. Kentish cask ales available too. Good selection of spirits finished off the repertoire. Will definitely return to this hidden gem of Sandwich.
