This was our 5th or 6th visit, but with this quality of food who's counting ?
Paul, Liz and their team create a wonderful dining experience.
The balance of flavours and textures has the palate dancing with delight.
The wine pairings complement the menu, and a couple of curve-balls makes the whole experience a delight.
Give yourselves plenty of time (we took 4 hours !) to savour the menu - you will not be dissapointed.
We look forward to our next visit.
What can I say but 'perfection'. From the moment you arrive and are greeted in the lounge area in front of a roaring fire by Liz it's like a journey through a culinary wonderland. Firstly drinks and amuse b'ouche which were delectable. Then you are escorted to your table which is not cramped as only 7 tables are available each evening to experience this foodies heaven. Depending on which tasting menu you have decided on you then spend the next 3 to 4 hours eating the most delicious food accompanied by descriptions and explanations from Liz as well as plenty of fun and friendly chatter (unless you want to be left alone to eat in which case your wishes are catered for as is everything else). I don;t really want to go into detail and ruin the surprise of the dishes and hope the photos do them justice, but, just to say the tastes and flavours and contrasts were stunning. If a michelin star isn't forthcoming I don't know why as I have eaten in many restaurants and this ranks alongside the best of them.
One final mention is to try the pairing drinks - perfectly paired and sometimes surprising, but, never dull this was the best pairing combination my wife had ever had.
All I can say is 'BRAVO'
Had a fantastic meal at this restaurant at the top of sutton bank on a cold and foggy evening. The interior by contrast was beutifully warm with bright stone walls and lovely furnishings. The meal was superb and the wine pairing excellent, The service provided by Liz, the chefs wife, was outstanding. We had a look around the 2 bedrooms which are in the process of being renovated, the bathrooms were finished and were very high end. Will look forward to them being ready for our next visit
This restaurant just keeps getting better. The owner operators have spent a lot of time and money on the interior and exterior and it has become a real class experience. The food is just superb and we continue to be amazed that this restaurant has not been awarded a Michelin star. In the same area we have the Star at Harome and The Black Swan at Oldstead and these are very good restaurants. The food at the Hare is even better.
Well what a find. Yorkshire has delivered again on the culinary front. We took our son there as the start to his wedding celebrations.
The Hare Inn is a gastronomic delight. The food, service and ambiance are simply superb.
We had the 10 course tasting menu and were taken on a journey of deliciousness of Michelin Star quality from the amuse bouche to the after dinner chocolates.
Glorious tastes of duck, venison, mackerel, bass, blackberry, chocolate, milk and honey to a one scrumptious, beautifully presented and paired perfectly with wines clearly carefully researched.
Front of house, Liz, was the owner of the Inn, husband is the chef.
Liz was charming, knowledgeable and unobtrusive or as chatty as you wanted.
With only seven tables in the restaurant you get a feeling of being a guest in someone’s home. The tables are nicely spread out, chairs very comfortable and the furnishings and decor homely and welcoming.
Even though we live in London we will be making a return visit, The Hare Inn is simply a destination restaurant.
From the moment I made the booking I knew The Hare was going to be something special and we were not disappointed. We were greeted on arrival by Liz who was warm, friendly and welcoming. The ambience of the restaurant with its roaring fire was delightful. Liz explained the tasting menu and promptly brought us our pre dinner drinks. What became evident throughout the evening was the attention to detail on every level - everything from the homemade fruit ice cubes in my gin to the presentation of the table lay out, the serving of the food, the knowledge of food they were serving - was just perfect in every way. I could go on and on...… It truly blow us away that we have this standard of restaurant on our doorstep. The staff were exceptionally warm, friendly and clearly passionate about their food, explaining each course of the taster menu as it arrived. And onto the food itself... We have eaten in restaurants all over the world and we can honestly and truly say this is one of finest and most enjoyable meals we have ever had. The combination of flavours and presentation was second to none and everything was perfectly seasoned (which is quite rare to find these days!) You could see the work and passion that had gone into every single element of all the dishes. I appreciate that the £200 bill is not your regular night out, but was it worth it - you bet it was! 5 Stars - I would give it 10 stars and we will definately be going again - Thank you Liz, Paul and your team for a truly wonderful and enjoyable experience.
We have eaten in many Michelin restaurants over the years and the meal we had here on a quiet Thursday evening was certainly up there.
From the "snacks" in front of a proper fire in the bar to the 3 fabulous desserts, each course was beautifully presented and balanced. Many times we had had a favourite dish that stood above the rest however I would be hard pressed to single out one course here as the whole evening was a delight.
The actual dining room was quite beautiful, relaxing and a joy to sit in while eating superb food and enjoying good wine. Liz hosted the whole evening and was friendly helpful and knowledgeable, which added to our enjoyment
We look forward to the bedrooms being finished soon and will return.
We visited the Hare with friends and had a lovely evening and delicious food.
Liz handled the booking process efficiently, despite a few changes that we made and was a perfect host for the evening.
All of the food was exquisite and the wine flight carefully matched. My particular favourite being the Mackerel Part 2 paired with the Plum Sake. In fact I've subsequently ordered a couple of bottles of the plum sake because it is so good!
Another highlight was the Smoked eel (snack) which was surprisingly good.
The dishes were all presented beautifully and there weren't any bizarre cheffy oddities that sometimes blight tasting menus. The whole menu was carefully crafted and flavours flowed well from one course to the next.
Thank you Liz & team for a memorable evening we're already planning our next visit!
We were so glad to have visited the hare for our anniversary this September. It was certainly well worth the drive up from Sheffield. A spacious dining room, with just 6 tables, allows the front of house team to make everyone feel welcome. There is a set tasting menu, with an optional wine flight. Each course was packed with wonderful colour, flavours and texture and you certainly will not leave hungry. We ate the lot and its up there with the best we have ever eaten.
A delight. Each course was imaginatively created and carefully constructed from local, even home-grown ingredients. The wine list was limited, a selection of well made, unpretentious wines and the Chablis we had complemented the food well. Service was attentive but unobtrusive. Thank you.
There are not enough superlatives to describe the tasting menu on offer. Each course was not only a work of art on the plate, but absolutely delicious. Liz, front of house, was knowledgable, not only of the food but wine as well and was attentive without being intrusive - a balance that is not easy to achieve. Looking forward to the guest accommodation being finished which will complete the experience. Highlights of the menu has to be the duck and hoisin and the chocolate salted caramel and hazelnut dessert although the honey bubbles were also stunning! Will be returning in future for other celebrations.
We had an outstanding 8-course taster menu. Everything was beautifully presented with surprises of oak smoke under a lid, foam bubbles of honey and tiny edible flowers/ leaves to decorate. An exquisite experience. We had a warm welcome from Liz who attended us throughout and made us feel very special. It was especially good for my wife to enjoy virtually same menu but Gluten Free without feeling she was missing out.
First visit but will be back soon. The set tasting menu was excellent especially the deserts. Liz and her team added to the experience by providing a relaxed and informative experience. A wonderful evening.
Been a long time getting here - always hearing good reviews but somehow never got round to visiting. We weren’t disappointed. Dined as a foursome, with some reservations regarding another ‘tasting’ format but we were just bowled over by the fresh flavours, well thought out menu and stunning presentation. We opted for the shorter menu, which worked out well but certainly would be tempted try the longer one on another occasion. It is a dining ‘experience’, you are in no way rushed through your meal (no two hour limit in place here, which so annoys me in a number of expensive restaurants these days). In fact would recommend eating earlier so you can sit back, relax and enjoy your food to the full. Service is well balanced, relaxed, pleasant and informative as regards each dish. We all left on a high having had a great evening - no ifs or buts.
We visited The Hare on our anniversary after a recommendation from our daughter and it did not disappoint. They serve a set tasting menu with lots of little courses, offering a myriad of flavours and textures to surprise and delight you. Liz and her staff do a wonderful job of explaining each course as it arrives, and they offer a wine pairing option which we didn't try simply because my husband had to drive. We did, however, hear the descriptions of the various wines at the next table and I would have loved to have tasted them. (Next time maybe we'll get a taxi!). The menu included a variety of meats, fish and and shellfish and there were several items (e.g. razor clam, smoked eel) which I would never have chosen but which I really enjoyed. The great thing about a tasting menu is that you get to try new things - and then you realise what you've been missing.
By the end of the meal, we were really full and almost couldn't manage the final dessert. (But we did, of course!)
Dining at the Hare is very definitely an experience worth travelling for. Just make sure you arrive hungry!
What can I say? We have fine dined in lots of places but our taster menu at the hare last night was a true experience. From the matched wines to the quality of the food what is not to like?
I have tried to have a stand out dish but it is so difficult I also tried to find one I was disappointed with but can’t.
The tomato and goats cheese dish, the mackerel, the bass, the duck, the sweets the snacks all wow factors. Finely judged flavours and textures. Service was great. Thank you for making our night one we will remember.
It's been quite a while since we visited The Hare, but absence certainly does make the heart grow fonder. We fell in love with it all over again last night for our Anniversary dinner and definitely won't leave it so long next time! The bar area has been tastefully re-furbished and is a lovely spot to sit with your pre-dinner drinks by the fire. Welcomed like old friends, we were treated to a succession of delicious snacks, leading into the best tasting menu and wine flight we've had for some time! Everything is there for a reason, the flavours complement each other to perfection and, whilst it's difficult to pick a favourite, my stand-out dish has got to be the tomato, goats cheese & basil. Absolutely fabulous! Everything about this charming 13th. Century Inn beats the nearby Black Swan into a cocked hat, our last visit there utterly bland by comparison. Why this place hasn't got a Michelin star yet is beyond me!
From start to finish we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. The staff are thoroughly invested in ensuring the evening is the best it could be. Explanations of the food and wine combined with exemplary cooking and service made this a special evening. The table was ours for the evening and we were asked if we needed a break before dessert was served. We came away having had our best anniversary meal ever in 33 years of marriage. Thank you to all who made this happen.
A lovely setting for a tastefully refurbished 13th century inn. The welcome from Liz and the staff is warm and relaxed. The food and wines exceptional, easily surpassing the now profit driven Black Swan nearby. Wonderful venison and beetroot. Intriguing mackerel 2 ways. The pacing of the tasting menu is just right and the matching wines well chosen. Milk and honey was a delight, I thought it was a match for my favourite pudding, ie Sat Bains' Thai green curry ice-cream wrapped in candy floss. Then I discovered a new favourite pudding of all time, chocolate, salted caramel and hazelnut. Absolute perfection on a plate!
This is truly a remarkable experience , the Hare is about 4 miles from Helmsley, it was originally a pub but has now been turned into a top end restaurant .
The welcome is very friendly and the whole experience is warm and welcoming .
There are two tasting menus on offer with paired wines should you wish, expect to be surprised , the flavours are expertly paired .
Start with nibbles ( salmon cones ) , soup that you will not have experienced before , mackerel, duck , milk and honey and to finish a dessert based on raspberry. Be aware that the last dish is frozen and take the advice to allow it to thaw a little while, my tongue is still recovering !
I am also told that the owners are planning to open accommodation shortly
