Review The Handmade Bakery - Slaithwaite

Lucy Harper
An absolute staple of Slaithwaite life - the best bread and pastries in the village, reasonably priced. The canalside location is perfect for grabbing coffee and a snack before or after a walk, or sit in for hot food and a look behind the scenes in the open kitchen. It can get a bit hectic in busy times or when the weather is bad and people are clamouring to sit inside, but the seating and ordering system has been adapted recently and staff are generally helpful. The business is a cooperative and truly independent and local, well worth supporting :)

I grabbed a quick takeaway bacon roll and wow, what a bacon roll that was. Made on bread they had just baked, perfectly cooked and plentiful amount of lovely bacon. Best sandwich I’ve ever had. Luckily for me I’ve got to go back next week for round 2!

Nice bakery! The seeded granary was most delicious!! We also brought some almond croissant and ‘pulla’ (think that’s how it’s spelt) which was a cardamom and cinnamon bun! Didn’t get a chance to take a photo, as we delved into them as soon as we got home! It’s not dog friendly inside, but is outside.

Brilliant place, lovely staff. Wonderful food. The mushrooms on toast are very tasty. Can get very busy but don't be put off waiting, it's worth it!

This is a lovely cafe with great values and quality of food behind it. Brunch was fantastic, mushrooms on toast and a croque monsieur. Tea and coffee was wonderful and there are gorgeous sweet treats too. We had a sticky ginger slice and a lovely chewy meringue. Table service and prompt, lovely staff.

This is the finest bakery I have ever been to in the UK. I love my bread, cakes and sandwiches. Nowhere beats here. Cakes are out of this world and breads and sandwiches and super tasty. I can’t recommend it enough. Thank you to you all. There are some amazing hard working staff there too!! Raj

Lovely food in a rustic setting. Staff are cheerful. Gets very busy at lunch time though, best to go before or after the rush.

Beautiful bread at this co-operative bakery. Great soups and stews including many vegan options and lots of cake. Gets busy you may need to share a table. Dogs welcome outside where there is s bench seating area.

We bought bread to take away, was delicious! Highly recommend the cinnamon bun thing and the olive sourdough! Sitting area could be bigger

A refreshing change from the corporate, mutli-chain cafés we see today (e.g. Costa/Starbucks/Nero). I highly recommend The Handmade Bakery and encourage everyone reading this review to pay a visit ASAP. Quality baked goods that taste delicious and look the part, sold at a very reasonable price. The Handmade Bakery Café has a varied menu to choose from and this includes warm drinks as well as baked goods. Staff here are very polite, welcoming and service is more than satisfactory. The bakery/café is set in an open space, with very simple decor and plenty of space/seating. However, given the pandemic, I understand the indoor seating is no longer available. Overall, a great find that I will definitely be visiting again soon.

Such a quiet out of the way cafe. Fantastic food and prices are moderate. Friendly staff who can't do enough for you. Clean toilet facilities. Can't wait to visit again.

Beautiful freshly made bread, cakes and patisseries which you can see been made. Highly recommended the leven bread and seeded granary, both absolutely gorgeous! Baguettes only served on a Saturday. Pretty location next to the canal so you can sit outside with bicycles or dogs, parking is tricky.

My daughter and I visited today for the first time. The half hour drive to get there was more than worth it Fabulous food and we both loved the style and feel of the cafe. We will be back. Amazing place highly recommend a visit

Absolutely gorgeous bread products, lovely ethos of how the place is run, the staff obviously work.hard and do the best flat white coffee in the world BUT I do find the whole ordering procedure and knowing what is available a bit daunting and somewhat unclear when I go in (or maybe this is just me!). My children and I sat at a table full of pots for a good 10 minutes and waited about that time for our drinks (I had a coffee and the kids had apple juice, which they loved) when it wasn't really that busy. I understand that these things take time and have to be done in time order but a litte communication wouldnt have gone amiss at this time. Xxx

I've been wanting to visit The Handmade Bakery since a friend told me about it a few weeks back, and I wasn't disappointed :-) Had a coffee with a piece of their pistachio and orange cake (lovely), and brought a "sleepless white" sourdough loaf home - just enjoying a couple of slices of it toasted. Very friendly atmosphere, lovely staff - nice to sit outside by the canal and watch the world go by :-)

Had a fantastic day making bread 🥖 it was great fun with very nice people. Would highly recommend it. Although arm and ribs ache from all the needing 😫💪💪

A really great day lots of information on how to do the basics well so you can have the confidence to go and try it for yourself and expect the same results. Matt and Steve are really knowledgable and had all the time to answer questions and give ideas would really recommend that any one who has any interest in making bread for whatever reason go along< and you get really great food as well as a load of bread to take home

An astounding little gem tucked away at the side of the canal in Slaithwaite. Wonderful home made cakes, artisan bread, wonderful strong coffee and sumptuous teas such as rooibos, which is delightful. Great friendly staff this place is a must xx

I went on my own with my baby during the week and the staff were so helpful and friendly. The coffee EXCELLENT. I had an almond croissant - the best I have tasted. Today I went with family for lunch, and we were all so impressed. Amazing value for money and lovely fresh produce. Again, excellent coffee. So happy to have found the place. Thank you.

Use to live in slawit and loved coming here for your bread and even though we live in oldham now we came back when we can and buy from here. I even had to pop in today when we had a flying visit.

Beautiful hand baked savoury Danish pastries. Fresh bread straight from the oven what more could you ask for? Lovely coffee and fresh proper tea, reasonable priced, and you can get baking lessons too!! Wonderful discovery.
