We don’t live too far from the Alex and it’s great to find a brilliant pub under new ownership just around the corner! Saw some people with food last weekend so we ordered the smash burgers and were not disappointed. Great portion sizes and amazing burgers with lovely chunky chips which is different from skinny fries at other places. Really friendly staff too which creates a really nice vibe to the whole pub. Recommend for friends to come sit in the beer garden as well as families to come for food.

The Alex has had some ups and downs in the 7 years I've loved in Southampton but it's always had a fond place in my heart, so I was overjoyed when I saw a few months ago the absolute legend Jen was taking it over. In the last few weeks since it's reopened she's done some lovely things to bring a warm atmosphere back, and has introduced an incredible new burger menu catering to meat eaters, veggies, and vegans. I highly recommend anyone give the new vibe a go, and am glad to have it back as my new (old) go to place for good food and a hang

Spent 15 minutes looking for a pub with decent beer. Seems like real ale is disappearing from city centre pubs. Remembered the Alex from a few years back so checked it out. Good beer, good atmosphere if a little noisy at times. Even had a game of pool. Recommended.

The Alex has made a triumphant return with smash burgers for carnivorous and plant eating visitors alike! I visited with my friend to trial their menu and it was fab. Great frickles, burgers and chunky fries. I'll be back!

Nice little stage space for bands. Awesome room with a big choice of gaming systems to play on. Girls toilets were a bit inconvenient though when I went as one was broken and the other's door didn't have a latch or lock. Nice little pub to have a drink in though.

The beer wasn't great but I'll give it another go later, not been back open for long.

Retro consoles, pinball machines, movie classics cover the walls, board games available, decent selection of beers and regular live music. Wouldn't recommend it for watching a match but it's not a sports crowd bar anyway.

Good to see the Alexandra being run as a real pub again.

Bloody good food and I mean that it's FAR above standard pub grub! Unfortunately their range of lagers on tap were a little disappointing but with a decent amount of ales, ciders and spirits it's not a deal breaker. Will definitely go back again.

I was always a big fan of the old Alex, with it's Star Wars memorabilia and mix of students and working patrons. Knowing there was new ownership I was keen to see how the pub was getting on so popped in late afternoon one Friday in the run up to Christmas.
The film memorabilia has all gone and the area behind the bar is slightly different but the layout of the pub itself is the same, with a large open area wrapped around the central bar. The new decor is nice and the furniture is the modern hodge podge of varieties. Special mention for the wonderful huge Christmas tree in one corner! Like many pubs, the pool table has been removed for now to make more room for seating because the pub still offers a good looking menu and offers roast dinners on a Sunday.
Unfortunately there is currently no draught real ale on offer. The friendly bar person, John, explained that it wasn't selling but they hoped to offer real ales again in future. For now there are three keg beers on offer, Sharp's Atlantic (£4.70 a pint) and Beavertown's Gamma Ray (£5.80 a pint) & Neck Oil IPA. A bit pricey, kegs are, but both were in good condition and tasty.
The area out the back is still there and is spacious and looks great with some twinkly lights and a marque to protect you from the rain.
I hope the pub continues to do well in these difficult times. It started to get a bit busier as I finished my second pint. The pub deserves to do well and it looks like it's in good hands.

A nice friendly pub with cool decor. Great place for nerds and geeks and pop culture freaks. Lots of games consoles! Unfortunately some of the consoles and games have been damaged and they no longer have guitar hero :( Drinks are not too expensive. Staff are friendly. However, the live music can be way too loud.

My favourite pub for a pre-match or post-match pint. Loads of Saints fans in there on match days and a few away fans too. Good selection of rums and a nice beer garden for the all important victory cigar.

Quirkly little pub that I don't often visit but always enjoy. A nice change from the normal generic places that have now swamped our high streets.
A broad drinks selection to cater for all, including the out and out lunatics that like 4 shots in their drinks. Nice little garden area out the back.

The place abounds with interesting decor, mainly Star Wars themed which make it a bit different and interesting. The indoor area is comfy and the service is friendly. Outdoors they have an open area were you can still watch the football! So overall, you have to say it's a good sports pub. They also have events and stuff going on fairly regularly.
The beer selection is good, they always seem to have doom bar on tap.
My only criticism would be that the place seems a bit rundown. Outside particularly the picnic-style tables really feel like they could give out beneath you at any moment.

Weirdly enough I felt the same as the other reviewers of this venue before I went in the first times, its a bit eccentric and it is a nice place. I was really surprised and have been back several times since.
Lots of memorabilia around the venue makes for a good atmosphere, with great staff, lots of comfy seating, large outside seating area which is great in the summer and fairly good drinks prices!

Watched the first match of the six nations in here and the place was packed, which made for a good atmosphere. That said the pub isn't really designed for watching sports and it was quite difficult to see a decent sized screen properly whilst the layout of the pub meant that it was really difficult for anyone to find a place to stand without blocking routes to the toilet and smoking area - the majority of customers got bashed about on a fairly regular basis by some very rude customers who couldn't be bothered to say excuse me but would rather just push y out of the way. The pub can't really be held responsible for this but it does tell you a little of the kind of person you will be sharing a pub with.
The door to the smoking area opens directly into the bar and was frequently left open - it could really use some kind of fire door self closing mechanism as the place was freezing throughout - we felt as though we were actually at twickenham!
The host of Star Wars and other retro toys perched above the bar gives the place character and if you long for the days when you last saw your millennium falcon or an x-wing then worth a visit for the nostalgia of childhood playtimes.
All in all a pretty reasonable student-type pub which doesn't pretend to be anything else.

Lovely pub, I can be found in there often. The pub is run very efficiently and the management and staff are very approachable. They have cult memorabilia and quiz nights too. They have a large garden area with plenty of seating and a laidback and friendly atmosphere, even on weekend evenings which is not always easy to achieve.
