Review The Swan Hotel Restaurant - Southwold

Chris White
A busy, warm, sunny, bustling 4 May 2024 Bank Holiday weekend finds Southwold flooded with happy holiday makers. I was looking for a quiet, cool, restful place to have a pot of tea and read my paper.. I ventured into the very smart Swan Hotel and was immediately impressed by the friendly and relaxed welcome from the reception desk. I was ushered into a very comfortable lounge to the right of the main entrance with windows facing on to the busy main street. Strangely the room was silent - some very efficient sound proofed windows. Suffice to say the service and pot of tea were first class and very reasonably priced. Well done to The Swan staff members - I shall return ........

We have had afternoon tea here on several occasions. We took my 94 year old father in law and they completely did a brand new menu for him taking into account what he does and doesn't like. Absolutely brilliant and good value too

A little gem, perfectly located minutes walk from the beach. Staff are welcoming and friendly. Stayed for 2 nights, perfect getaway just a couple of hours in the car. Be sure to try dinner at the hotel as it's a seasonal menu that caters for both meat lovers and vegiterians. Do not miss the Little Fish and Chip shop seconds from the hotel.

We visited the crown to celebrate a special occasion, and were treated like royalty by the wonderful staff, with special mention to Matt and Caitlin. The service was impeccable, the lounge warm, comfortable and welcoming. We had desert and a few drinks, and it was all sensational. Thank you for a lovely evening

We had an amazing stay at the Swann Hotel. The staff were all excellent, very polite and professional. The hotel itself is modern and comfortable and the rooms were excellent. We stayed for dinner which was definitely 5 star. Thank you everyone at the hotel, we had a lovely stay and yes, we will be back again 👍

Turned up at just the right time for a walk-in table for two, generally though I'd strongly advise booking for Sunday lunch. Both decided on the roast, boyfriend had the lamb and I had the beef. We agreed they were probably the best Sunday lunches we'd ever had. Seriously! Meat was tender, Yorkshires were enormous, gravy was generous, roasties were crispy and the selection of mixed vegetables original. I decided to try the low-alchohol Adnam's wine which along with their huge selection of beers is locally produced. It was OK, a little sweet for my taste but at least I didn't waste the afternoon asleep in front of the telly*. *I did.

After my wife Jo Fuller left a scarf at this hotel and calling the hotel they were fantastic and posted it to us. Would like to say a big thank you to Dawn who was exceptionally helpful on the telephone and sending the scarf.

We've been coming here for over 20 years now, and have now started bringing my own kids. Love it. Great bar in the back

Thank you for a wonderful stay. Room was divine. Location as central as anywhere can be. Very good service and nice food too. Electric charging in the car park was a bonus. Minor gripe was no fresh orange juice at breakfast.

Stayed at The Swan for my birthday on 28/09. The ladies working on reception that day were first class, they went the extra mile to add a birthday dessert plate as a surprise in our room. The room itself is stunning. We had our evening meal there and the ribeye steak was divine, well and truly the best meal I’ve ever eaten in a restaurant. A very special birthday 😊

Delicious lunch to celebrate my husbands 80th with family. Staff were friendly and efficient in both the bar and restaurant.

My wife and I went to The Swan Hotel as a wedding anniversary treat. We were certainly not disappointed. The hotel feels very classy, and staff were all impeccably professional and polite. The afternoon tea itself, served in a very stylish room with lovely decor, was beautifully presented and tasted as good as it looked. Once again, the staffed that served us were all very polite and friendly. I highly recommend The Swan Hotel for its afternoon tea.

I've known the Swan Hotel for over fifty years. In fact it was the first place I stayed at in Suffolk, when my parents decided to buy a plot of land and build a home in Walberswick. When I learnt of the recent refurb I was a little wary, as the well worn traditional style gave way to contemporary design. However, having made the leap into another time, I have to say that the results are splendid. The food is exceptional now and very much up there with the best in Suffolk alongside the Great House of Lavenham and the Fox and Goose of Fressingfield. Their 'Gin poached pear, spiced crumbs, and Italian meringue with a cassis sorbet' was like a party in the mouth! The staff, led by Craig and Yasmin, backed up by the eccentric Holmes, ensure the service is both highly efficient as well as friendly. Thanks also to Nadia, Richard, Emily, Rebecca for making the Swan a 'home from home'.

We have just arrived home after an amazing evening staying at The swan for our 15th wedding anniversary, staff where so helpful and polite and had a lot of knowledge on the building. Our room was stunning and a lovely touch was the welcoming cakes with happy anniversary on . Got a complimentary bottle of Adnams gin and the spa products where so lovely to use. We had a wonderful over looking the square with a window seat which was so lovely to sit and people watch. I booked a table in the still room and my goodness we was not disappointed it was beautifully presented staff where very attentive and it trashed fantastic. And another finishing touch was a plate with happy anniversary on it and a selection of mini cakes which was just so lovely . We had an amazing nights sleep but to be fair we have 2 yr old twins and an 8yr old so getting a full nights sleep is always very welcomed. Breakfast was amazing with a selection of cereals fruits juices even champagne if u wanted a pick me up from the night before 😉😉 all in all we had an amazing stay and sohope we can persuade the grandparents to have the children again so we can stay again . Thank you so very much we had a lovely time . The wilsons xxx

This is a wonderful hotel, old fashioned in the best possible sense. This was our 3rd stay, we had the same room with a lighthouse & distant sea view. Gorgeous newly re-furbed bathroom - the decor in the room (which is huge) was a little bit dated but high quality & a huge comfortable bed. Dinner was excellent from start to finish including homemade petit fours with the coffee. The.staff are welcoming & polite without being stuffy and the breakfast waiting ladies are the best. Can't wait for our next visit.

Enjoyed a wonderfully relaxing and refreshing stay at The Swan. The staff could not have been more friendly or helpful. The restaurant not only looks amazing (modern and fresh but still with lots of character) but the food was outstanding - delicate salmon, perfectly cooked beef Wellington and I could eat the Tarte Tatin every day! Our room (9) was cosy with everything you could possibly need and a huge bathroom. Breakfast this morning was faultless - perfectly cooked and a great choice. Can’t wait to come back!

We stayed at the Swan yesterday. To our amazement we were upgraded from an Excellent room to an Outstanding room. Following the recent refurbishment the hotel is truly stunning. The room was remarkable and came with beautiful complimentary toiletries. bottle of gin. Nespresso machine etc. The bed was incredibly comfortable with high quality linen and bedding. We ate in the restaurant and had a drink in the Tap room, finally brandy in the beautiful lounge. The tasting menu was excellent as was the breakfast the following morning. All of the staff we encountered were helpful, knowledgeable and very well trained. We will return very soon!

Fabulous refurbishment in keeping with the building and lovely room (Room 3) but little niggles...burning my knee on the bathroom radiator during the night as it (and the toilet roll holder) are too close to the toilet was not great. The folding doors to the tv also do not fold back out of the way and are proud of the sides, so if you put your bag on the floor (no luggage rack) be careful not to bang your head on them as you stand up. We would go for a bigger room next time which will hopefully have a bigger bathroom to avoid this, but this trip was a wedding gift from close friends and no option to upgrade offered. On the plus side we really enjoyed our meal, chef is a little inflexible with swaps, you can not have something (pearl barley in my case) and just order extra vegetables - but cannot exchange. Chosen wine (the Sauvignon Blanc) not available so upgraded to the Pouilly Fume which was excellent. Service was first rate throughout the hotel and in the restaurant they are careful to stagger dining times so book early if you want later than 7pm. The waiter who was pleasant and very knowledgable, he knew the menu inside out, was already aware of my cream allergy but did not make a big deal out of it, just made sure that nothing ordered I would be a problem for me. Attentive throughout the meal without being in your face so five stars there! A very relaxing stay in a beautiful hotel.

Lovely decor in the sitting rooms and restaurant. Very good food (delicious mackerel dish) especially the desserts (wowed by the liquorice root panna cotta with stout ice cream). Very friendly efficient service.

We were very lucky in finding a room at The Swan at the very last minute. Adnam's have just spent a reported £6 million on refurbishing this wonderful building & the hotel apparently only re-opened two weeks ago. From the moment we arrived to be greeted by the charming & helpful receptionist Rhia, we had a truly fabulous stay. Our room was extremely comfortable, the decor is a marvellous combination of modern & traditional & the food was delicious. One of the nicest hotels I've stayed in for a long time in an excellent location right in the middle of Southwold. Cannot recommend The Swan too highly & very much hope to return for a longer stay.

All perfect really, my sister and I come every year to do our Xmas shopping in town. The bar is nicer now after the renovations but strangely didn’t sell crisps, a bit odd. We had my daughter and her small son staying for one night too and he likes crisps so I went to the shop next door and bought some. Adnams make their own crisps so I think they are missing a few vital bits of common sense here!! The rest of the food has been great and the staff are all lovely. We’ve had a really good few days and nights. Thanks

We celebrated a friends 50th with afternoon tea at The Swan. We all agreed it was the best afternoon tea we have ever experienced. All the food was light and delicious and the service was fantastic. Will definitely be back.

Lovely staff. Food very nice but could have been better, skin on my chicken was soggy and the "gin poached" pear tasted like it have never seen any gin! Knives are awful, typically style over substance. Didn't think that the housekeeping was really up to scratch, grubby milk jug, stained toilet bowl, some of the glass decorations could have been cleaner to mention a few. Stayed in room number 1 and although it was extremely comfortable and the bed delightful there were problems. Although the curtains are beautiful, the way they are hung causes light to flood in the room around them. At night, there is a light on the outside of the hotel and the curtains allow this light to fill the room. The carpet edges are fraying in places too. The floor of the room above was very creaky and in fact, the noise generated woke me at four o'clock one morning with people moving about. We requested ice for the room and it arrived in open champagne buckets, we expected a lidded ice bucket from such an establishment. Personal taste, I know, but the dark decor in the ladies lavatory looked like a dungeon. Overall, it was okay but did not fulfil our expectations.

Amazing room with upgrade due to Birthday 👍.... The hotel is really lovely and the food in the restaurant is excellent but the service ruined the experience for us 😔.....!however the management dealt with our disappointment excellently and made up for it the next morning by giving us an extra special birthday breakfast and by discounting the dinner food bill! Would definitely return as the hotel is amazing and knows how to treat guests when they are not happy!

This is not the same Swan Hotel. It's not just the decor that has changed so has the service and price and not for the better. I've visited on a number of occasions but today was the last straw. I ordered a cafetiere of coffee for two (£8) that only was enough for two small cups which when questioned was told was correct and once again there was no gluten free cake or biscuits.
