Review The Black Horse - Standlake

Mark R
Decided to book here for Sunday lunch as it was recommended by someone locally and we'd not visited since it was refurbished a good few years back. It's a lovely village pub and we didn't have a problem booking a table online a few days before hand. Food wise, it's five stars but we found it a little on the expensive side. The roast beef was £22 but it was a lovely plate, generous amount of meat, crispy spuds and some lovely seasonal green beans which came from the small garden plot out the back. The kids fish and chips was £10 but was enjoyed by our younger diner. Dessert wise, didn't find the choice very inspiring so we ordered a children's brownie which was £6, only £1 less than the full price menu one. Service wise it was okay but we had 3 or 4 different people serve various bits which I think makes things a bit disjointed and you don't get much continuity. Our bill was also charged wrong as there were a couple of things on it we hadn't had which doesn't close off the experience on a great note. There was also a 12% service charge on all dining bills which is a little unusual for a pub and also increased our spend (not adverse to this as worked in hospitality for many years but prefer to have the choice to leave a tip). We would recommend if you want a lovely Sunday lunch in an equally lovely pub but it was a little more expensive compared to our usual expectations and recent experiences. Not sure we'd return straight away as a few other places in the area that we want to check out or go back to first.

Visited for drinks on Saturday and for lunch on Sunday as we were staying nearby. Staff were very friendly and really welcomed our dog. We all agreed the roast dinners were the best we’d had, really amazing. Will definitely visit again.

Went for dinner last night with my son as he lives locally, and was absolutely blown away by the quality of the food! It's been a few years since I stopped in, but I'm very glad we did as the menu was varied with great options. My son had the burger, probably the best burger I've tried in a very long time, and I had two of the smaller plates with a salad. Beautifully cooked food, with just great combination of flavours; even the salad was was tasty and fresh and varied ( usually the weak point). My son also had the special of the chocolate mousse for dessert...well, for the chocoholics amongst us, I will just smile and say "leave room for dessert"! The service was just spot on too, with nothing missed and a professional but friendly attitude. Very reasonably priced as well. Definitely will be back next time I'm up in the area.

We decided to book a table at the pub, due to celebrating our birthdays and wedding anniversary, whilst holidaying in our caravan. We opted for the Black Horse burger, and the 10z sirloin steak, the food was piping hot and was absolutely delicious. The girls on the bar and serving the food were so courteous. We were so glad that we booked to eat here.

Went for Sunday lunch and the roasts were superb. The staff were attentive and well trained, they couldn't do enough for us. There was a hood selection of ale/lager/stout and wines. However I personally would have like more "wine by the glass" options. General atmosphere was welcoming and pleasant but better music would boost it to next level. I will happily go back.

We went to the Black horse pub for dinner last night. It was barbecue night, we had a booking at 7.30pm. The staff were rushed off their feet and most of what was on the menu was sold out , which is most likely a teatament to the quality of food. Our the meal took a while to arrive and the chef offered a free drink to compensate which we refused as we are not big drinkers. We ordered steak and a chicken kebab and the food was cooked beaurifully and my steak perfection. I have nothing bad to say really, except for some patrons who were rude to the staff about the wait or being turned away. Not sure how many people read these reviews, but perhaps recognise that the young ones at the restaurant are working as hard as they can and perhaps a little kindness would go a long way. All in all. I'd recommend the place 100% . Perhaps plan an earlier dinner if you want the specials for the day 😁

Food looked good but we only had chips (which were gorgeous!) great staff, lovely atmosphere, really enjoyable experience. Will be making a point of going back for a meal and some more gin soon!

A nice and cozy pub with a garden and a pizza oven. Serves a variety of ales and mixed drinks. Food includes a vegan and gluten free choice. The pub has guest rooms. Parking lot attached. We stayed at the camping site close by and visited three times. Would come again if close by.

This pub was a two minute walk away from our campsite and was ideal for a drink and/or dinner. The staff were very friendly and the food was really good. Two courses with wine were very reasonable and it's a definite bonus for the campsite visitors. We shall definitely return.

Very good food at this nice pub, the pie was outstanding and the Fish and chips too (could use more salt though). Nice atmosphere and friendly staff. Also a children's menu.

This was a very handy pub, within walking distance from our site that we were staying on . There was a fun packed weekend with great music. Although we didn't eat there the food did look good.

We would like to thank Luke, Jamie & The Team at The Black Horse for a superb weekend. We came in for steak night on Thursday & Lunch on Sunday and were both exceptional. The Easter egg hunt for the kids on Sunday in the garden was a lovely touch and they thoroughly enjoyed it. We have booked already for when we are back in July. Thank you so much Bradshaw Family

Totally dog friendly and the food and service was excellent. My only observation was no option of sandwiches on a weekend. Well done team. Such friendly staff

Stopped at the caravan site around the corner. We went in the Black Horse every night and the last night for a meal with a table of 6. Very welcoming landlord, fabulous service and fabulous food! Brilliant!!

First visit since renovation which had been finished to a real high standard. It has kept the wonderful country pub feel, but has now been extended which means more tables and no more going outside for the bathroom. Food was sublime - really delicious. Absolutely will be back, loved it.

DO NOT GO HERE UNLESS YOU'RE.LOCAL. Beautiful area, food okay but absolutely disgusting service from the staff/bar manager so called land lord who told me, "Your attitude stinks!". Went here on a recommendation, but it appears they would much rather take the orders from the locals rather than a walk in, despite there being plenty of space. Took over 20 minutes to even order food, as locals took priority, then over an hour for it to arrive. We offered to go somewhere else as they were busy (20 covers!!), they said no and then told us we had attitude! #hungrykids #sortitout

Terrible! When we arrived there was no food available, no draught beers only bottled, which they ran out of 30 minutes later, and the service was poor.
